скільки всього відбуваєтьсянавколо того Свята! Украмницях і мегамаркетах -

акції та знижки, усі вікна тавітрини наче беруть участь в

чемпіонаті світу на найкращуоздобу. Театри та концертнізали вигадують спеціальнівистави до різдвяних свят. Ушколах репетирують вертепи.Відбуваються цілі Фестивалі -Різдвяної Зірки чи ДавніхВертепів. Ледь не кожен наш рух, погляд, подум тепер - різдвяний. Але усе те - похідне,дотичне, другорядне.

Найголовніше - родина. БоРіздво в Україні - родиннеСвято. Це не тільки "різдвянізнижки", а великий Божий дар. Якісь кілька годин для того, щоб

зібратися разом і разом побути.Щоб чекати на колядників здвору, хвалити бабусиніп а м п у х и з т р о я н д о в и мваренням, згадувати, як "ми саміколись з колядою по хатахходили"! Найголовніше цьогоСвятвечора - набутися поруч.

Ялинкові прикраси, музичнілистівки і віршики в смсках -це,звісно, красиво. Однак це -

декорації та реквізит. Це те, щ

ми чіпляємо напередодні знімаємо опісля. А є те, чого нпочепиш, не витягнеш кладовки чи зі старої скрині. Ц- тепло. Тамте звичайнісіньктепло, яке генерується нашисерцем десь у районі сонячногсплетіння. Тепло, яким легкділитися.

. . . П с и х о л о г и ч а с о рекомендують цікаву вправяка дозволяє легко гаситконфлікти між людьми. Сутпроста. Коли у сварці чсуперечці ви починаєтвідчувати, що от-от вибухнете,спиніться. Спиніться і подумкзгадайте, як ви любите людинз якою сперечаєтеся. Вашпогляд - зміниться. Кутики вуспіднімуться вгору. І опонент цпомітить. І конфлікт згасне. все через простеньку річ - любоі те тепло, яке вона нам дає. Данеодмінно.

Поділіться цим теплом цього вечора. З натомленомамою, з пузатим дідусем, похресниками, племінниками чвласними дітками. Поділітьсним з водієм маршрутки, якоїдете поглянути на міськялинку. Дайте трохи теплвипадковому перехожому, щпіднявши високого комірбіжить кудись засніженоювулицею. Погляньте усміхнен

на закохану парочку, що зайнялстолик біля вікна в безіменнкав'ярні.

Тепло, воно таке. Це ясвічечка. Від неї можнзапалити сотню інших свічок, вогонь - не зменшиться. Тасамо і ваше серце. Воно мабагато сил зігріти інші серця. нічогісінько не втратитьДіліться теплом, діліться.

Дванадцять пісних страв, серед яких обов'язково

макітра з кутею. І бабусі, і дідусі за столом. Малеча увишиванках біля вікна виглядає першу зірку - великий знак, що можна запалити свічку і всідатися за стіл. Дідух, запах ялинки, фізичне відчуття казковости.

Зима. Молитва і велика-велика родинна вечеря. Це - Різдво.




х, як часто сьогодні удрукованих, ефірних тавсемережних засобах масової

і н ф о р м а ц і ї з г а д у ю т ьсловосполучення "буремні 90-ті".

І є, чого згадувати. Неприхованапаніка у масштабах епідеміїкосить ряди домогосподарок таїхніх чоловіків. Тримаючи у руках торби з крупами, свічками,сірниками і милом, вони нервовотупцюють біля валютнихобмінників і мріють - встигнутикупити долари чи євро. Накрайній випадок - злоті. Вонибояться. Бояться, що завтра небуде грошей дитині на обід, що небуде, за що придбати продуктівна Різдво й інші свята, що

консервації, квашена капуста і

бульба закінчаться раніше, ніжтреба. Вони переживають, щоінфляція з'їсть усе - і останнізаощадження, і завтрашній день.

...Я ходив до початковоїшколи, коли настали 90-ті. Томучудово розумію отих чоловіків іжінок, які стали усюди раптом роздратованими , нервовими,переляканими. Бо я сам пам'ятаю,як це - батьки, які не витримаютьі спиваються. І всі ми пам'ятаємо,

як це - мами, які продаютьдомашній крам або їдуть "назаробітки". Це - 90-ті, крихітко.

Усі ознаки того, що біда іде,заочнюються щодня, щохвилини,щомиті. Розирніться навколо себеу громадському транспорті чи навулиці. Бачите? Бачите, якп о б і л ь ш а л о п ' я н и ч о к ібезхатченків? А отих гопників,хто "нє-ми-такіє-жизнь-такая"

бачите? А розкладочки тротуарах біля продуктов ринків? Як вам ці зворушлисервізи зі серванту? Ношені, адобротні , хутряні шапк

впізнаєте? Трофейні годинникнагороди, ордени, значк"раритетні" іграшки з кіндесюрпризів, російсько-японсь розмовники, потерті компакдиски групи AQUA і стаплатівки Rolling Stones бачите?

Торгівля повернулася у нашжиття. Торгують усі - на тротуачи в інтернеті. Заробляють на хлз маслом. Продаютьусе - від ґудзика додуші. Їсти ж щосьтреба.

Професійно, досвідчен

м и н а ю ч и п и т а н н я " Х твинуватий?! і "Що робити?", цікавимося лише одним: "Янадовго?" Бо ми уже знаємо, мце вже переживали, що танагорі, оперуючи нулями, ніхне знатиме і не відчуватиме, як - дивитися на полиці власних ші мовчки думати, чого шкоменше. Життя на продаж.

знову кожен сам за себе ...А скоро - Миколая. Токоли я ще ходив до початковшколи, шоколадна монетка жовтій фользі була велико радістю зранку 19-го грудня. приміром, кіндер-сюрпризузагалі великим щастям! А буще таємно в'язані бабусешкарпетки, непогані іграшки встарших двоюрідних, зошит

набори фломастерів і наборигуаші. Була одна на двох великашоколадка. І футбольний м'яч -дермантиновий, але новий ісправжній!

Наші мами, наші дорослінавіть не маючи копійки на двісосиски, намагалися творитидиво. І творили його. Навіть внайголовніший дев'яностий рікМиколай - приходив. Бо цеважливо, знали наші мами, щобказка тривала. Це важливо - щобдиво відбулося. Діти-на -це -заслуговують.

І от потім... Потім мип о д о р о с л і ш а л и , а ч а с ипокращали. І ми самі уже творилидиво.

А я пам'ятаю, як це гарно -бути дивотворцем. На початкудвотисячних у Львові дужепопулярною стала традиція

"допомагати Святому Миколаю". Чиновники з в ідповідн ихуправлінь міськради складалипереліки адрес, за якими живутьмалозабезпечені родини. Астуденти й християнськіактивісти готували для дітей з тихсімей великі подарунки - зіс о л о д о щ а м и , і г р а ш к а м и ,канцтоварами.

Ми навмисно не ішли всиротинці. Тамтешніми діткамизаймалися спеціальні фонди і, аяк без них, політичні партії. Ми ждопомагали тим замурзаним

хлопчикам і дівчаткам, які хочживуть з батьками, але давно ужне мають щасливого дитинствАбо й не мали нікого.

Н е б у д у с и л ь нолітературнювати цю історіРозкажу, як було. Ти стукаєшобшарпані двері і прислухаєшс Чути кроки, хтось зазирає дверне вічко:

- Хто там? - П о м і ч н и к и С в я т о г

Миколая! Часто нам не вірили, але та

відчиняли. Ми кликали дитинвказану у підготовленомч и н о в н и к о м с п и с к у , повідомляли:

- Святий Миколай уважслідкував за твоєю поведінкопротягом минулого року. Звіснне все йому до душі, алзагалом...

(У хлопчика чи дівчинки робилися великі круглі очі і трохивід подиву розтулялися вуста.)

- ...але загалом він вважає, щоти був чемним. Оскільки у

Святого Угодника дуже багатосправ, він попросив нас... (Тут мама, якщо була не

п'яною, притуляла до ротадолоню, витирала очі.)

- ...щоб ми передали тобіподарунок. Будь чемним інаступного року!

...Дитина робила несміливийкрок вперед і простягала руки.Усе. Далі у твоїй серединіпереплітаються комок від сліз,щастя від того, що приніс радістьіншому, розуміння, що дивомусить жити. І ти ідеш донаступної домівки, де мама незнає, як викрутитися, щоб підподушкою її мале таки знайшлосвого подарунка.

Деякі дорослі вибігали услід,питаючи: "Скільки з нас? Що мивам винні?" Великою втіхою буловідповісти: "Нічого".

...Пишучи цей текст, раптом розумію - це ми даємо Святому

Миколаю можливість бути. Бохто він без нас? Міф, історія, рядок у переліку Святих. Тількими. Тільки ті, хто незважаючи нанабуті цинізми і кризи середньоговіку, усередині грудня готуємоп о д а р у н к и д л я і н ш о г о ,уможливлюємо диво.

Це нашими руками СвятийУгодник Миколай відмикаєкватирки, нашими зусиллямипоправляє ковдру, підбиває

подушку, і кладе під неї трохитепла. Неважливо, чи цешоколадна монетка у жовтійфользі, чи квадрокоптер напульті. Важливо - що відбулосядиво. Важливо, що завдяки мені ітобі, цього року у ніч з 18 на 19грудня Святий Миколай зновуходив українськими домівками.Ось, що справді важливо навіть,коли на вулиці - буремні 90-ті.

or the last two decades, members Plast, the Ukrainian Scout-ing Organization, have worked

on the noble goal of world peace ina very peculiar way. They take thevery flame which has burned on thesite of Christ’s birth for centuriesand pass it to all those willing towarm their lives with it.

Originally undertaken by Austri-an scouts in 1986, the initiativeknown as the Bethlehem PeaceLight literally creates connectionsbetween nations and ethnicities, asthey light their own lanterns fromthe flames of the other, wishingpeace to one another.

Very much realizing it as a sym-bol of peace, Israeli and Palestinianscouts have exchanged the flame, ashave scouts from Serbia and Croa-

tia, and perhaps most poignantly, sohave Russian Pathfinders.While Plast members in the

United States have participated inBethlehem Peace Light ceremoniessince 2009, this year its message ofpeace has special meaning as theyobserve their ancestral homelandravaged by unforeseen war and vio-lence at the hands of Russian-backed rebels.

Plast was founded in Lviv in1911 as a part of the internationa

scouting movement that broughabout the Boy Scouts of AmericaPlast raises youth in the spirit olove to God, neighbor, and UkraineMembers are expected to followPlast’s 14 laws which include th principles of honesty, fairness, usefulness, optimism, thriftiness, diligence, love and care for beauty

Therefore, this year’s Bethele-hem Peace Light activity, undertak-en by 15,000 members of Plastaround the world, is dedicated toending the conflict in EasternUkraine.

The Bethlehem Peace Light was brought to the United States thisyear via New York aboard an Aus-

trian Airlines jet, directly fromBethlehem by way of Vienna onDecember 11th. The flame was brought to Chicago in a specially-modified lantern by members of theBoy Scouts of America, and wassolemnly passed along to scoutsacross the city at St. Joseph the Be-trothed Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church.

Капеля Бандристів захоплює серцтисяч слухачів у цілому світі своїм

співом та грі на бандурі.

Після виїзду з України в 1945-муроці, і довгі роки в діаспорі капеля

була нагороджена державноюпремією України ім Тараса

Шевченка в 1992 році.

Складаючись із приблизно 50активних членів, котрі походять з

різних професії, лікарі, бізнесмениадвокати, військовики, та і емериті студенти, капляни живуть в різнихмістах Америки та Канади. Вони

добровільно і безплатноприсвячують свій вільний час івихідні дні щоб зїжджатися на

проби та виступи—

вечорі, 6-го грудняв і д б у в с я к о н ц е р тУкраїнської КапеліБандуристів ім. ТарасаШевченка, в нашомухрамі. Із велукою радістю і сердечнимиоплесками приблизно

500 прибувших слухачів вітали

бандиристів на солею передіконостасом. Під проводомдириґента Олега Махлая, сам зміста Кливленду, концерт почавсяпіснею, словами їхнього патрона,Заповіт.

Хоч це був концерт колядок та різдвяних пісень, перші кількапісень були присвячені в пошану

200 річниці народження ТарасаГригоровича Шевченка. Йоготвори та вплив на українськукультуру до такої міри визначніщо підчас совєтського режимубув рух його придушити. Але,д у х л ю д и н и н е м о ж н апридушити, і ось так, в скрізьмайже 200 літ, одиниці, хори, такапелі так як Капеля Бандуристівприсвячують свій репертуар,

щоб поширити його творчість.Так і тому почали вечір на йогославу і в подяку за його внесок всерця і життя майже кожноїукраїнської людини, а особливоза цей остатний рік. А сама пісняОтаман Гамалія була присвяченатим котрі за цей минулий рікпролили свою кров і віддали своє

життя за Українську волю ісвободу.

По цілому світі міліони або навітьміліарди людей грають наскрипці, фортепяні, або інших

музичних інструментах. Але,лиш в Україні чи в Українськійдіаспорі мала сотня людей грає на

ба н ду р і . X оч ансамбльскладається лише з чоловічихголосів, рік за роком від 1979 рок у, Ук ра їн ськ а Ка п ел яБандуристів фінансово підтримуєта спонзорує дво тижневий табірдля хлопців і дівчат.

Від 12-ти років в гору молодізацікавлені студенти вчаться гріна бандурі та народному співу.

У

Тепер летиш в Україну — тебе виглядають. Полетів би за тобою, та хто привітає.

Там повіє буйнесенький, як брат, заговорить; Там в широкім полі воля; там синєє море!

Полетів би, послухав би, заплакав би з ними... Та ба, доля приборкала меж людьми чужими.




Р і вн о ча с н о ма ю ть змо г упоспілкуватисья з іншимистудентами котрі приїжджають збагатьох штатів і Канади, анавіть із поза межами Америки,та собі поплавати в басейні або в ріці Алеґейні, грати волейбол,помандруати по лісах або гратифутбол. Багато з бувших

студентів тоборовиків є теперчленами сьогоднішної калелібандуристів і були присутні наконцерті.

На сам кінець, після довгихоплесків, Капеля повторила ще раз пісню Бандуристе ОрлеСизий, та могуче сольо басаОлега Зміївського із Віннипеґу,Канада, принесло сльози в очі

майже кожного слухача. Самконцерт був завершеним коли позапрошеню дерегента, ціла церква разом із бандуристами заспівалиБог Ся Рoждає і Тиха Ніч.

На наше щастя і в подяку загостинність нашої парафії,Капеля нас ще раз осолодила

своїм співом в неділю рано наСвятій Літургії. Щира вдячністьУкраїнській Капелі Бандуристівім. Тараса Шевченка за те щовони до нас загостили, і такдуховно і величаво почали нашРіздвяний сезон. Бажаємо їмбагато успіхів і Божих ласк намногії літа, та лишаємо їмвідкриті двері на майбутнівиступи.

Since its founding in Kyiv Ukraine in1918, the Ukrainian Bandurist

Chorus has been an unbroken threadin the Ukrainian Spirit.

The Chorus, endearingly referred toas the banduristy, named after the

bandura instrument which is played,adopted an ideal of – God, truth,

freedom, and human dignity,heralded through song.

On Saturday, December 6th, theUkrainian Bandurist Chorus visitedSt. Joseph parish with a Christmas

concert fundraiser. Under thedirection of maestro Oleh Mahlay,

the concert took place inside thechurch on the solea in front of the

iconostas. With nearly 500 guests inattendance, and standing room only,the Chorus enchanted the audiencewith its repertoire of sacred carolsand songs of Ukrainian poet and

artist Taras Shevchenko.

After nearly three decades of performance, Joseph Stalin per-ceived the spread of Ukrainian tradi-tion through song as a threat, andunder the then-newly formed Soviet

Union, executed many of its members. Fortunately with the assis-tance of the allied forces, all of thechorus’ members immigrated to De-troit, Michigan, in 1949.

Since then, the Ukrainian BanduristChorus has continued to cultivatethe beauty of Ukrainian musicthrough its repertoire of over 500

songs, by performing to audiencethought North America, Europe, anAustralia.

Traveling from across Canada, ancoast to coast within the UniteStates, the members of the ensembvolunteer their time for monthly rhearsals, and performances. Somof these talented musicians comwith professional backgrounds law, medicine, engineering an business, while others are studenor retirees. Many of them are nonly second and third generatioAmericans and Canadians, some ar

even second and third generatioensemble members, following in thfootsteps of their fathers and grandfathers.

One year after the brutal beating ofstudents and journalists on the Mai-dan in Kyiv, Ukraine, and rampantkillings of innocent citizens,Shevchenko’s thoughts and wordscontinue to evoke a spirit of liberty,and inspire the hearts and souls of

millions.

VED FAITHFUL

CHRIST IS BORN!

“Glory to God in the highest, and peace [to men of good will/to those on whom His favor rests].” (Luke 2: 14)

Our preparations for the great feast of the Nativity of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ bring to minthe song of the angels at Bethlehem. It is good for us to meditate upon them during this season, and perhaps eveto let this meditation influence our New Year's resolution as we prepare also for the arrival of 2015. It is especialimportant to remember the angelic promise of peace this year since there seems to be so little peace these days: wneed to be reminded that, despite the headlines which scream of “man's inhumanity to man”, God's plan for us different from the one inflicted upon the world by leaders whose cold, calculating ambition and insatiable greeknow no bounds, thugs for whom people are merely tools to be used and discarded, for whom life is of no value.

The ancient song was first heard in a world which, although separated from us by two millennia and bywide technological chasm, was really not so different in terms of human nature. What was that world? Saint Patells the Galatians “When the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the lawto ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption. (4: 4-5)” Does this mean that everything w perfect? Far from it! Some romantics like to point out that Jesus was born during what was referred to as the Pa Romana – that is, the “Roman Peace”. Outwardly, it may have looked as though peace reigned throughout the Roman world, but that peace was only maintained by Roman state-sponsored terror tactics – tactics like the crucifiion to which Jesus would eventually be sentenced since he was considered a threat to that very same Pax Roman Not to be outdone by the cruelty of the Romans, the petty monarch Herod resorted to infanticide when faced withe same newborn threat to his power, ordering the murder of every male child under the age of two. Such was th Pax Romana; it is no wonder that the people seethed under the conqueror's boot! The Romans and their puppehad reason to fear rebellion.

So what about “the fullness of time”? A possible answer can be found in any of the twelve -step programsuch as Alcoholics Anonymous. According to the twelve-step paradigm, people with addictions are often nready to change their lives until they have “hit bottom” - in other words, until their life has gotten so bad that theis no way to go but up. Perhaps this was the realization which was dawning on the people at that time. Can't yohear them moaning as they pray to God for relief in the words of Psalm 123?

To you I raise my eyes,to you enthroned in heaven.

Yes, like the eyes of servantson the hand of their masters,

Like the eyes of a maidon the hand of her mistress,

So our eyes are on the LORD our God,till we are shown favor.

Show us favor, LORD, show us favor,for we have our fill of contempt.

Our souls are more than satedwith mockery from the insolent,with contempt from the arrogant.

It is to such people, seeking to be ransomed from the violence and disorder of their world, that the angelssang of peace.

Nothing much has changed in two thousand years: if anything, our technology has made us more effectiveat inflicting murder and mayhem. Nonetheless, we dare bravely to join our voices in the angels' song, stubbornlyrefusing to give up on the promise of peace. As we do so, we must remember that peace is not a gift which, likethe snow, comes down from heaven to refresh the earth and hide the scars we have inflicted. Rather, it is our task,our vocation. As Pope Paul VI reminds us, “If you want peace, work for justice.” The prophet Isaiah (2: 3-5; 11: 6-9) provides just such a glorious vision of people striving together for the peace which God intends for the world,and then enjoying the fruits of their labors:

Many peoples shall come and say:“Come, let us go up to the LORD’s mountain,

to the house of the God of Jacob,That he may instruct us in his ways,

and we may walk in his paths.” For from Zion shall go forth instruction,

and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.He shall judge between the nations,

and set terms for many peoples.They shall beat their swords into plowshares

and their spears into pruning hooks;One nation shall not raise the sword against another,

nor shall they train for war again.House of Jacob, come,

let us walk in the light of the LORD!...

Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat;

The calf and the young lion shall browse together,with a little child to guide them.The cow and the bear shall graze,

together their young shall lie down;the lion shall eat hay like the ox.

The baby shall play by the viper’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair.

They shall not harm or destroy on all my holy mountain;for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD,as water covers the sea.

“With a little child to Guide them” - ah, yes, the newborn Prince of Peace. May His peace be with all of usand with our world, in this holy season and throughout the year to come.
