After the Cyclone. After Cyclone Marcia had been through, a neighbour’s friend pulled out of his uncle’s place in Carwarral. Before long he joined a convoy of cars whose passage was blocked by trees. About every 20 metres, they all jumped out and worked together to clear the road, the guy with the chainsaw being sent to the front. Along the way, a bobcat and then a tractor came to help. These people didn’t know each other but they instinctively worked together as a community. That friend has gone on helping others all through the past week. In fact, he and six mates spent a day clearing trees for us. This generosity has been repeated right across the region here. And people, both those receiving and those giving, feel better for it. Made in God’s image, we are made for this: to give and receive love. Normally, we experience this most strongly within our family but the experience of ‘disaster’ has proved an opportunity for us to go beyond family and friends, to care for the stranger. After seven days of constant care in hot, humid weather, many are feeling very tired and worn, yet we know we have experienced something precious: we have seen our best selves. The challenge for us now will be to work out how we can treasure that sense of community when life goes back to normal. One way is through gratitude. One member of our parish has decided that for Lent, she is going to put on Facebook each day, one thing for which she has been grateful in this ‘disaster. In short, she is letting the grace of God blossom and share it with others. Loving God, there are times when disaster and challenge come into my life. After the Cyclone.

After Cyclone Marcia had been through, a neighbour’s friend pulled out of his uncle’s place in Carwarral. Before

long he joined a convoy of cars whose passage was blocked by trees. About every 20 metres, they all jumped out

and worked together to clear the road, the guy with the chainsaw being sent to the front. Along the way, a bobcat

and then a tractor came to help. These people didn’t know each other but they instinctively worked together as a

community. That friend has gone on helping others all through the past week. In fact, he and six mates spent a day

clearing trees for us. This generosity has been repeated right across the region here. And people, both those

receiving and those giving, feel better for it.

Made in God’s image, we are made for this: to give and receive love. Normally, we experience this most strongly

within our family but the experience of ‘disaster’ has proved an opportunity for us to go beyond family and friends,

to care for the stranger. After seven days of constant care in hot, humid weather, many are feeling very tired and

worn, yet we know we have experienced something precious: we have seen our best selves. The challenge for us

now will be to work out how we can treasure that sense of community when life goes back to normal. One way is

through gratitude. One member of our parish has decided that for Lent, she is going to put on Facebook each day,

one thing for which she has been grateful in this ‘disaster. In short, she is letting the grace of God blossom and

share it with others.

Loving God, there are times when disaster and challenge come into my life. Send me your Spirit, that I may let you

life and love transform the situation and make it a place to be formed into community. I ask this in Jesus’ name

confident that you will hear me. Sister Kym Harris osb

Rori (2W) – In the cyclone a tree branch fell on the shed and a big tree fell down at the

back of the yard. It was bad because it blew away our greenhouse.

Luca (Prep S) – The trees fell down. There was lots of rain and clouds. It was a bit scary

because the horses were running around in the paddock.

Cadence (1A) – The door fell down under the house and

some of our tress fell down too. I thought it was funny.

From the Principal:

Director’s Visit – It was our pleasure to have our Diocesan Director, Miss Leesa Jeffcoat for a visit to school yesterday. Leesa spent time with the Leadership Team, visited classrooms and surveyed our recovery efforts after last week‟s cyclone. We are very fortunate to have such a „hands-on‟ Director and I thank Leesa for her time yesterday.

School Fees – School fees are now overdue. If you are unable to pay your current account by the end of the week please make an appointment to see me.

P & F Meeting – Please be advised that our next P & F Meeting will be held this Thursday night in the staffroom at 6pm. All welcome. Class Liaison Representatives – Many thanks to the people below who have registered their interest in becoming a Class Liaison Representative. We still have a couple of spots to fill. If you are interested, please contact our P & F President, Emma Singleton on 0423402767 or Email [email protected]. Thank you. Communication Reminder – A reminder that communication from the school is now (mostly) paperless. Please ensure you have the School App installed, or are accessing the weekly newsletters via our school website. The School App is our preference as we can send alerts and reminders, including the cancellation of events and so on. We also have the ability to send group SMS text messages to parents who have given us their mobile contact numbers. Our school also has a new Facebook page, which proved useful last week when our phone and internet lines were down at school. This is also a useful tool for us to share upcoming events with the wider school community. Whilst we try to utilise a combination of these communication methods, we do rely on parents accessing these themselves. Reading the school newsletter carefully certainly helps the office staff by minimising the quantity of repetitive phone calls and questions in the school office.

School Sores – We have received some reports of children suffering from “School Sores” over the past week or two. A reminder that the recommended exclusion period from school until appropriate antibiotics have been administered is at least 24 hours. Sores must be covered with a water tight bandaid.

Masses at St Vincent’s – St Theresa‟s Church received significant damage in the recent cyclone. Therefore St Vincent‟s will be holding additional masses until the damage can be repaired. As well as the Sunday mass at 8.30am and the Tuesday mass at 9am, masses will also be held Sunday 10am and Wednesday at 9am. All are welcome.

Congratulations – to Jaykob Davis who was nominated by Dr Hall to participate in the Queensland Conservatorium State Honours Ensemble Program Middle School - Rockhampton 2015. Jaykob has been successful in receiving an offer to participate in the program with his cello. Well done Jaykob!

Change For Change St Joseph‟s Wandal is running an initiative in support of Caritas Australia. Caritas is an international aid and development organisation of the Catholic Church in Australia. They: deliver long-term development programs, help people regardless of ethnicity, religion or political beliefs, work with the poorest of the poor and help people help themselves. This year Caritas‟ message is Food For Life, raising awareness for the 1 in 8 people in the world who go without adequate food to survive. St Joseph‟s Wandal in support of Caritas, is running a Change for Change fund raiser every Wednesday and Friday. Parents and Carers are asked to donate the change from their tuckshop orders to the Caritas Appeal. If Parents and Carers wish to support the fund-raiser this way, please just mark tuckshop order with an appropriate note advising donation. Additional ways to donate to this worthy cause through this period of Lent include:

Caritas Money Boxes - which can be found in each of the classes, admin office, library and tuckshop;

Trash For Treasure - later in the Term parents will be asked to donate any quality unwanted items that they might have at home which will be sold for a donation. More information regarding this will be provided closer to the event;

Free Dress Day - on the last day of school Term students will be given the option to wear Free Dress for a gold coin donation.

Karen – choosing food for life Karen is a First Australian living in a remote rural community. Like many she can’t always afford or access healthy food. Karen gained the skills she needed to budget and choose healthy food for her family with support of Caritias. “Now my kids eat healthy and they’re willing to try new foods. I want them to be healthy and strong.”

I have been at St Joseph’s School

Wandal since May 2007, and before that I worked for

30 years for the government, in charge of finance,

wages, procurement, and also an Harassment Referral

Officer and internal auditor.

The major reason I enjoy working at St Joseph’s is the

children, it is delightful seeing them enjoying the books

and the peace and quiet of the library. Our Book Fair is

a highlight event every year and the story book

character parade is always a great success and well

supported.

I am blessed to have my husband Paul, two sons, Ben

(20) an apprentice electrician, and Kai (14) who is at

TCC in year 9 purple, and two very affectionate dogs.

looks interesting, and I look forward to

discussing assessment, reporting, word

study (spelling), Consistency of Teacher

Judgement and technology.
