EducationalSeminarViennaThis autumn the AEJM MuseumEducation Seminar will take placein Vienna from Sunday 11 Octoberuntil Thursday 15 October. Theprogramme will be hosted by theJewish Museum Vienna in closecooperation with our Viennesecolleagues Hannah Landsmann andDan Fischman. ProgrammeThe 5-day programme will offer varioushands-on workshops, lectures,presentations and discussion sessions.The different Museum Focus sessionsaim at creating a framework for mutualsupport by offering participants aplatform to present new and innovativeprojects and to discuss specificchallenges and case studies thatthey're dealing with in their daily workat their respective museums. Theworkshops will have a special focus ondeveloping lesson plans. Theparticipants will work at differentlocations in and outside Vienna, suchas the JMW, the Museum Judenplatz,the Stadttempel synagogue, the EsslMuseum of Contemporary Art inKlosterneuburg, and Bratislava(SK). The A-CEP, a joint programme of theAEJM and the Jewish Museum Berlin,focuses on vital aspects of curatorialwork at a Jewish museum, such as theidentification, interpretation anddocumentation of Judaica. This years'programme is developed byprogramme director Dr FelicitasHeimann-Jelinek, assisted by DrMichael Feurstein-Prasser, and in closecooperation with the AEJM and thecuratorial team of the hosting venuethe Hungarian Jewish Museum andArchives. Programme The 5-day programme will focus on:

Judaica collection of theHungarian Jewish MuseumThe collection of the HungarianJewish Archive Judaica at the HungarianNational MuseumJudaica at the EthnographicMuseum BudapestBudapest Synagogues

Participants will also visit the HolocaustMemorial Center and the House ofTerror. RegistrationThe A-CEP is open for curatorsworking in Jewish museums or withJewish collections. AEJM membersmay send one delegate each. Toregister, kindly submit a letter ofmotivation (not more than half a page)

Join us for the AEJM AnnualConference 2015 in Jerusalem. Thisyear the conference will be hostedby The Israel Museum in Jerusalem,which celebrates its 50thanniversary this year. The programme The “Self” and the“Other” - Jewish Museums DealingWith Notions of Diversity offers awide range of activities, such asworkshops, curatorial tours,discussions, excursions, anda keynote lecture by Avraham Burg,former Speaker of the Knesset.

After the AEJM has received anapplication, the AEJM Board willevaluate the application. As partof the assessment process, theAEJM will consult experts familiarwith the applicant museum andthe references indicated by theapplicant. Applications will beassessed according to theircontribution to the long-termsustainability of the applyinginstitution and its holdings. You will have a chance to visit not onlythe museum galleries and the specialanniversary exhibitions of The IsraelMuseum, but also the U. NahonMuseum of Italian Art and the NationalLibrary of Israel.

On Wednesday 18 November theAEJM and The Isreal Museum organizean optional excursion programme tomuseums and collections in Or Yehudaand Tel Aviv to our member institutionthe Museum of Libyan Jewry, theBabylonian Jewry Museum and othervenues. Call for proposalsThis year we invite our memberinstitutions topresent temporary exhibitionprojects at the AEJM Conference. Asession with short PechaKucha-stylepresentations will serve as aninspiring "market place" for travelingexhibitions. These short presentationsshould focus on recent temporaryexhibition projects that were in-housedeveloped and produced and that couldbe of interest to other membermuseums.

Please send in a proposal for apresentation with a summary of notmore than 150 words that includes:

"Not to end up like my mother”, "Tobring our family from Ethiopia", “To losemy virginity by 2000”: these are few ofthe hundreds of secret notes thatpeople inserted into the PortableWailing Wall, an audience-participatoryinstallation from 1993 which invitesvisitors to deposit their fears, hopes,doubts and wishes into four labelled tincans. The fifth can has no inscription,and can be filled according to thevisitors’ whims. Katzir’s practice subverts expectations,surprising and disorienting thespectator. His images often have adualistic nature: inside is outside, thetragic is comical, and what seems faraway is actually very near. The result isa world in which the foreign and thefamiliar coexist in unexpected ways. Ram Katzir was born in Israel in 1969and moved to The Netherlands at agefifteen. He studied sculpture andphotography at The Cooper UnionSchool of Art in New York (1993-94)and graduated from the Audio Visualdepartment of the Rietveld Academy inAmsterdam in 1995. For the past thirtyyears, Katzir has lived in both Israeland The Netherlands. Katzir first broke into the internationalart scene in 1997 with Your ColoringBook, an audience-participatoryinstallation that unsettled viewersaround the world with innocent-lookingchildren’s books that turned out to befilled with images taken from Nazipropaganda. This juxtaposition
