A seemingly pretentious motto yet a simple visionary statement of our ambition ever since the first issue was
published in 2001. Contrary to what many believe, biomass is the world’s single largest renewable energy
source. Half of all renewable energy consumption in 2017 came from modern bioenergy, and, according to the
International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) latest market forecast – Renewables 2018 Market Analysis and Forecast to
2023 – modern bioenergy will have the biggest growth in renewable resources between 2018 and 2023.
At the same time biomass is arguably still the most misunderstood and emotive energy resource. Its inherent
diversity and interdependency makes it complex. Its complexity is often compounded by confusion as it only
affords a contextual ”it depends” answer to ”yes or no” style questions. A good trade publication serves its
readers and advertisers as a source of accurate, reliable and inspirational information within a relevant contextual
framework. This symbiotic relationship enables a powerful collective communication platform that helps develop
and grow the sector. As advocate press, our brief is to promote the economic, environmental and societal ben-
efits of the sustainable use of biomass for energy, demonstrating its role as an integral part of the bioeconomy.
Therefore editorial priority is given to the “doers” taken from across the biomass-to-energy value chains; bio-
mass feedstock, production and collection systems, biomass refining and processing technologies, biomass stor-
age and transportation systems, biomass utilisation intermediaries and technologies. Features range from on-site
coverage of commercial facilities and integrated installations to pilot plants and R&D projects.
This we do by taking a “muddy boots” approach purposely “out of office” attending conferences, trade shows
and visiting operations to learn what’s up. By using the power of example, wherever it may be, so that it can
serve as inspiration to others. In the increasingly challenging biomass business and communication environment,
it is imperative that such examples are shown, the stories told and contextual records set straight. This is best
done onsite and face-to-face.
Remember that it is your story and that of your clients or your clients’ client, we want share. It is your

The 5th edition includes site reports, a review of 2018 and outlook for 2019, pellet production technology features and will be distributed at all major pellet events throughout 2019.
First published in 2005, the “World of Pellets” poster has been updated ever since. It gives a visual overview of global biomass pellet production and location. Listed plants have an annual production capacity of 10 000 tonnes or more.

CENTRAL & SOUTH AMERICA The fi ve coun-
tries have a combined installed capacity of 1.4
million tonnes (3%) 2017. Countries like Chile are
developing small to medium sized domestic pellet
production for local residential heating markets
whereas Brazil, the largest producer in the region
with 1 million tonnes, is developing capacity
primarily for export including pellets made from
sugarcane bagasse.
EU-28 The European Union currently has
the largest installled capacity share (22.5 mil-
lion tonnes, 40%) for pellets. In addition, it has
the second largest share (126 000 tonnes,
16%) of installed capacity for advanced
biomass pellets. Cyprus and Malta are the only
two member states without pellet production
capacity larger than 10 000 tonnes-per-
annum whereas Germany has the largest (3.2
million). Several countries such as Estonia,
France, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Spain and
Sweden have capacity in excess of 1 million
tpa. Looking ahead another 432 000 is being
planned or is under construction.
NORTH AMERICA Combined, the United
States and Canada currently have the second
largest installled capacity share (17.1 million
tonnes, 31%) for pellets. In addition, it has the
largest share (591 000 tonnes, 77%) of installed
capacity for advanced biomass pellets. With the
exception of The region is the largest producer
of industrial grade pellets and largest exporter of
pellets. In Canada, British Colombia is the largest
pellet producing province whereas in the US, the
south eastern states (Alabama, Florida, Missis-
sippi, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, North
Carolina, Tennesse) account for the lion’s share
of capacity. With the exception of Vyboskaya in
Russia, the US is also where the largest pellet
plants are located, ten facilities have an installed
capacity of 500 000 tonnes or more – two of
which are 700 000 tonnes or more. Looking
ahead, in Canada, another 1.9 million tonnes is
being planned or is under construction whereas in
the US, it is an additional 7.8 million tonnes.
Asia Pacifi c & Oceania The region has the largest installled capacity share (8.9
million tonnes, 16%) for pellets. In addition, it has the fourth largest share (20 000
tonnes, 3%) of installed capacity for advanced biomass pellets. Of the ten countries,
China stands out with 4.6 million tonnes (52%) of the capacity. Malaysia, Thailand and
Vietnam are edging closer to 1 million tonnes per annum whereas South Korea has
seen the start-up of a new 300 000 tpa facility, the largest in the region. Japan has
numerous pellet plants but most are small, below the 10 000 tpa threshold. However,
both Japan and South Korea are rapidly emerging as signifi cant industrial pellet mar-
kets. Looking ahead, China is a potential market changer given the market size and
renewable energy ambitions outlined in its 5–year plans. The production is primarily
for domestic consumption and it has currently a ban on wood pellet imports.
AFRICA & REST OF THE WORLD The fi ve countries have a
combined installed capacity of 138 000 tonnes 2017. However,
several countries have small-scale production serving local
markets in particular for cooking. It is also this sector that
local small-scale production of densifi ed biomass fuels has an
enormous potential to address several social and environmental
issues such as deforestation, illegal logging, indoor air pollution
and bush encraochment.

ABOUT WORLD OF PELLETS 2018
The data is for 2017 and was collected during December 2017 – January 2018. “P” denotes planned, “C” denotes under construction and “T” denotes advanced pellets (torrefi ed, steam treated or hydrothermal
carbonisation). Plants with an installed capacity of 10 000 metric tonnes or more per annum and that were in operation at some point during 2017 are listed. Observe that installed capacity does not necessarily refl ect
actual production of any given plant during 2017.
The listing is by country and in alphabetical order. Plants marked in green denotes an ENplus certifi ed facility. While the map has listed 371 ENplus certifi ed plants with a combined installed capacity of 20 246 000
tonnes, note that this installed capacity does not necessarily refl ect actual ENplus certifi ed output and that the certifi cation status can change for any given plant – for current status always check with www.enplus-
pellets.eu. A few plants produce other densifi ed products such as animal bedding pellets, sorbent pellets or briquettes at the same location. While the vast majority of plants listed use wood as feedstock, a number use other
feedstocks such as cereal straw, rice husk, sunfl ower husk, sugarcane bagasse, empty fruit bunches (EFB’s) and oil palm trunk (OPT).

REST OF EUROPE INCL. RUSSIA The region has
the fourth largest installled capacity share (5.4 million
tonnes, 10%) for pellets. In addition, it has the third
largest share (25 000 tonnes, 3%) of installed capacity
for advanced biomass pellets. As can be expected,
Russia has the largest 3.8 million tonnes (70%) share
in the region. Several countries in the Balkans region
such as Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo and
Serbia have built out capacity in recent years both for
domestic markets and export to the EU.
