This year, Finland celebrates 100
years as an indepen-dent nation. Over the century the country has carved out an in-ternational renown with businesses that have grown into global ma-jors in sectors such as forestry, forest prod-ucts, and mechanical engineering to mention a few. And although highly industrialised with energy intensive industries, Finland is one of only three Euro-pean Union (EU) Mem-ber States (MS) where the share of fossil fuels in energy consumption is under 50 percent.
Finland is not alone in having made com-mitments and mak-ing significant invest-ments into bioenergy solutions; the entire Baltic Sea Region is a bioenergy showcase from small heat plants to advanced biorefiner-ies. Both DONG Energy in Denmark and For-tum Värme in Sweden have made recent an-nouncements to phase out coal by 2023 and 2022 respectively. in Helsinki, you will meet the experts and com-panies that are active in the bioenergy sector on the Nordic-Baltic markets.
The programme also includes an opportu-nity to visit Neste’s advanced biofuels re-finery, the Hake Vuori fuel terminal, and por-voon Energia power plant. Admission to the concurrent bio-technology exhibition Chembio is included in the conference fee. All-Energy 2017, the UK’s largest
renewable and low car-bon energy exhibition and conference, is be-ing held Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 May at the Scottish Events Campus (SEC – previ-ously SECC), Glasgow, Scotland, UK.
Bioenergy figures high on both the ex-hibitor and conference sides of the show, with a sector-specific trail guide available to help visitors easily find all exhibitors with bioenergy-related ex-hibits on their stands. it’s early days with 10 weeks to go as this article is written, but already nearly 50 com-panies have said “put me on the bioenergy trail”. They include biomass boiler manu-facturers and agents; consultancies – such as NNFCC able to give independent advice; wood pellet specialists; companies offering specialist engineering services and full turn-key solutions; as well as organisations who can advise on selling power. Ofgem E-Serve will be on hand to offer guidance as support schemes alter.
in the multi-stream conference bioenergy has two dedicated bio-mass, AD, biogas and biofuel sessions – to-gether they form a fas-cinating 180 minutes of up-to-the-minute presentations on ev-erything from the bio-refinery map of Scot-land to bioenergy and the circular economy. There is also a packed energy from waste ses-sion. On top of these packed sessions, there are three sessions ded-icated to heat networks – having those without mention of biomass would be like having the traditional British dish of fried fish with-out the chips!
The well-established session aimed at the farming and landown-ing community cer-tainly has bioenergy content in the shape of AD; additionally the ‘Local Energy’ and the Quick Fire Commu-nity and Local Energy Seminar theatre are also relevant to the bioenergy community.
