Fun Facts about Canadian Thanksgiving: 1) Thanksgiving was first celebrated in Cana-
da when English explorer Martin Frobisher held a feast in what is now Newfoundland to mark his safe arrival to the New World in 1578. This was more than 40 years before the American Pilgrims arrived!
2) Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday in Canada, except in the maritime provinces.
3) The tradition of breaking the wishbone dates back to the Etruscans of 322 B.C. The Romans brought the tradition with them when they conquered England and the Eng-lish colonists carried the tradition on to North America.
4) Canadian Thanksgiving is earlier in the year than our American neighbours because we are further north, making our harvest earlier in the season!

BASHAW & DISTRICT HEALTH & WELLNESS FOUNDATION
Our MISSION: Bashaw Health & Wellness foundation is an Organization that Sup-ports the Betterment of Health & Wellness through Information, Education & Funding.
The Following is a partial list of projects we are proud to have supported:
BDSS and Adult Learning Summer Programming What a Summer! With the collaboration of BDSS and Bashaw Adult Learning, we were able to bring 8 summer students on board to add to our incredible team at BDSS. This allowed us to expand our literacy programs this summer, along with our regular summer partners and programming. Our literacy programs were available free of charge to all participants and supported all learners. The reading literacy programs expanded to fill mornings and after-noons. We were fortunate enough to have a service dog in training come into BDSS three times throughout the summer and students were able to read to the dog, giving them an added experience. This was well received and would definitely be worth doing again. We also added a math literacy component, introducing math games, increasing skill sets, and focussing on the individual learner’s needs. Finally our music literacy program went from 2 afternoons last year to full days Monday to Friday to either learn piano or guitar. The combination of all of these literacy projects allowed us to target whole brain learning and thus was a fit for any learner. Our numbers were high and our feed back very positive. Our regular programming included: Summer In The Park, Summer Reading Program at the Library, and several other community projects for kids and families, whom we supported with additional man power and cre-ative input. We were also able to work with a new community partner, trying out a pilot project. The Bashaw Rec-reation Board inquired as to whether we would be able to partner with them to create summer camps which would target youth in our community, and give them an opportunity to participate, at a reasonable fee, in three different camps. The camps supported all areas of interest as we had a sports camp, an arts camp, and a science/adventure camp. Each camp was a success and the feedback was highly positive. Overall, it was a summer full of learning, fun, and incredible opportunities that added to our community's well-being. A huge thank you goes out to Bashaw and District Support Services and Bashaw Adult Learning. I am entirely grateful to work with all of the staff at BDSS and our wonderful summer students: Alison, Amanda, Jillian, Jaycee, Maria, Grant, Jordan, and Janessa. Lori Miller Wellness Coordinator, BDSS

Generations Daycare Here at the Daycare in September, we are falling back into
routine and our days are busy. Preschool for 3 and 4 year
olds started on September 13 and runs every Tuesday and
Thursday.
We are talking about Falling Leaves in Circle Time and we have harvested
our tomatoes in the yard. One staff member attended the SE:101 workshop
in Red Deer to learn about social and emotional growth in young chil-
dren. The information will be shared at our monthly staff meeting.
We would like to thank Ashley Swystun for her donation of sidewalk chalk
and Play Dough, and Arlene Simmer for her donation of buttons. The Day-
care is also looking for another high chair (must be CSA approved). If any-
one knows of one available, please let Marci know.
We would like to ask parents to please label lunch kits and shoes
with first and last names with a black felt pen. It really helps new staff
who may be getting children ready to go outside or when having
lunch or snack time. Parents may wish to check out Mabel’s Labels
(www.mabelslabels.com)
Thank you very much for your support!
Bashaw Preschool
Our Preschool Program has begun! We have 11 children in the morning class and a whop-ping 16 in the afternoon class!! There are many familiar faces returning and an abundance of new children we look forward to getting to know better. The C.O.W. bus was here on the 22nd without the bus. We would like to thank Cindy Hunter and the Bashaw Library for or-ganizing this experience for the community. Unfortunately this will be the last year as the funding will expire in June 2017. Thank you to the Sehlstrom family for the generous dona-tion of toys and coloring books. The United Way raffle tickets are available to help fulfill the volunteer opportunities required by parents. Please see Marci or Alison for tickets.
Don’t forget that BDSS is on Facebook!! Send us a friend request and we will keep you in the loop!!
