FAQ

Why does the Film & Tape Calculator round some items up?

What exactly is "contingency"?

Why are so many categories listed as "contingency" only?

You forgot rental prices for tripods, a dolly, and a jib! You idiot!

- Two reasons. 1 - The "Total Hours of Raw Footage" is rounded up because film transfers are calculated NOT on the hours of footage, but rather on how many hours it takes the telecine operator to do the transfer, which includes time loading and unloading the film reels. Rounding up helps cover this extra time to make sure you have a bit of contingency on your transfer costs. 2 - The "Total Reels" is rounded up because no negative cutter will charge you for 6.5893625431 reels. But, they MAY charge you for 6.6 reels, or they may even round all the way up to 7. Again, this is simply to cover your butt for any situation.

- Contingency is the "Cover Your Butt" side of budgeting. In filmmaking, anything can happen, and when it does, it costs serious dough. The "Contingency" is designed to add a safety net to your budget, so that just in case a terrible flood washes away your sets (See Lost in La Mancha for examples), you'll have some extra cash to keep the project alive.

- Indie filmmaking is insanely low-budget. In my world, actors provide their own costumes, props are borrowed or bought at the Salvation Army, and make-up consists of gallons of latex overnight-shipped from Monster Makers. Thus, the contingencies in those cases are the back-up in case bartering doesn't work. Again, to cover your butt just in case five gallons of blood are poured down a city storm sewer by the co-Director's angry father (speaking from

What's with the "Video Transfer to Film" option? Selective? What the heck is that??transfers of video footage intended to be incorporated into a Film Negative Cut.

- Not remotely. I own my own heavy-duty Bogen tripod. I own a primitive PVC-pipe track dolly, and I own one of Promax's heavy-duty Cobra Cranes. I recommend the same to everybody. Buy the cheap stuff on your own. For $800, you can have all the camera support equipment you could ever ask for. Also - most Grip trucks will come equipped with a track dolly, and most of the HD camera packages will also include very heavy-duty tripods..

nincompoop!

Page 14: Advanced Budget Template

What's with the "Days*" columns?

What does the "VHS Duplication" price include?

Visit DiscMakers' website for more details and options.

What does the "DVD Authoring" price include?

- Again, not remotely. I own a shotgun mic, a sturdy boom pole, a portable field mixer, and plenty of XLR cable. Again, buy your own! $400 will buy all the basics, or tack on an extra grand for a nice Lectrosonics wireless (a great addition to any sound kit.)

It's all nice and good, but I want to use the new Vision2 Kodak film. Can I change that? - Sure! Do whatever you want! This is your budget, so if you want to use the Vision2 or EXR Black & White, just replace any of the film stocks in Column A with your own, and change the corresponding price in Column C.

- These are there just in case you need something or someone for a longer or shorter time than the overall "Production Days." Entering a number of days in the "Days*" columns will cancel out the "Production Days" and "Prod. Days Alt" entries for that item.

Why so few jobs in the "Crew" list? What about Line Producer and Focus Puller and Production Assistant? - You want to pay your PA's? You're a nicer person than I am! No, just kidding. Those aren't on there because most extremely low-budget films won't have them. Most extremely low-budget filmmakers probably don't even know what a Line Producer is! IndieBudgetBuddy is designed to keep everything extremely simple, so listing off every last crew position, most of which will never be filled in a sub-$500,000 movie, is just useless clutter. If you want to take the extra unlisted jobs into account, just pick one of the listed crew positions with the same pricing as your Line Producer, and

What's with the "Film Scanning" and "Film Recording" sections? Cineon? 2k? What the…?"Film Scanning" and "Film Recording" are what need to be done if you have Digital Effects that need to be done AND you're finishing on Film. Cineon is Kodak's 10-Bit image format, and is the common Scanning format for high-resolution Film images. This format retains all of the film images' dynamic range, so that it can be adjusted ad nauseum in Post. "2k" is the scanning resolution, which translates to the following resolutions: 16mm - 856x620, Super 16mm - 1024x620, 35mm Academy Aperture - 1828x1332, 35mm

What does the DVD-R Duplication rate include?

What do the "DVD-5 / DVD-9 Replication" costs include?

Visit the DiscMakers site for more details.

What is the "Deluxe Option" for Authoring?

For more options from DiscMakers, visit their website:

What's DVD-R, DVD-5, DVD+R DL, and DVD-9?

- The DVD Authoring price takes the estimated final running time from the Film & Tape Calculator and compares it to the DiscMakers prices for authoring and encoding. The way it works in this situation is $590 for 90 minutes of video ($2 per minute over 90), and includes a Main Menu with up to 3 Sub-Menus, and up-to 25 chapter points. Discmakers also offers lower-cost encoding with fewer options, as-well-as custom encoding. Visit their site for more http://www.discmakers.com/

- It all depends on how many you get. If you need a short run of less than 100 discs, the price includes black thermal printing on the disc, and the discs come in simple paper sleeves. If you are ordering 100, DiscMakers has a special price of $650 that includes black thermal on-disc printing, and full-color covers in Amaray cases (the DVD cases that we're all used to.) For over 100 discs, the price reverts back to the black thermal on-disc printing with paper There are more options that are not included in IndieBudgetBuddy (for instance, slimline jewel cases for a small additional per-disc fee) that you can view on DiscMakers' duplication website.http://duplication.discmakers.com/

- With DVD-5 and DVD-9, the price includes the Glass Master (from which all discs are replicated), Amaray-style cases with Full-Color covers, and Three-Color On-Disc printing. Plus, all DVD replication orders through DiscMakers also include a Free UPC Bar Code, which would normally cost an insane $750. This is an authentic bar code, too. So, you'll basically have a Store-Ready DVD in your hands, that can be distributed to any retailer, including

- DiscMakers "Deluxe Video Conversion" is $590, and includes MPEG-2 encoding of 90 Minutes of Video, an interactive main menu with up-to three sub-menus, and 25 custom chapter points. For projects over 90-minutes, each additional minute is $2. Charges for additional minutes are taken into account using IndieBudgetBuddy's Film & Tape Calculator.

- These are the most common DVD formats. The amount of video that each format can hold depends largely on the compression of the video. DVD-R is a Single-Sided, Single-Layer General-Use Recordable DVD that holds 4.7GB (4.7 "Gigs of Bytes," which actually translates to 4.34 GB of storage), or roughly 100-120 minutes of video. DVD-5 is also a single-sided, single-layer disc, and holds the same amount of information as a DVD-R, but is a manufactured disc (it's much faster and cheaper to manufacture large numbers of DVD-5s than it is to burn large numbers of DVD-Rs.) DVD+R DL (burned) and DVD-9 (manufactured) are Single-Sided, Dual-Layer discs which hold 8.5 GB (8.5 "Gigs of Bytes," which translates to 7.95 GB of storage), or roughly 200-220 minutes

What's with this 3-Day Week thing?

What's an EPK? What's a PPK? Isn't that the gun Bond used?

What's with the trailer Blow-ups? Flat? Scope? What the…?

Why does my film's Negative Cut require so many reels? I thought film reels were 2000 feet long! - Release Prints use 2000-foot reels. Negative cuts, however, use 1000-foot reels. This is because the raw stock used for the optical sound track comes in 1200-foot rolls. Your final 35mm Release Print will be broken into 2000-foot reels, roughly 20-minutes each.

What's with the different tape formats? DVCPro25? DVCPro50? DVCProHD? HDCAM? What's the diff? - First off, HDCAM is Sony's HD tape/compression format, and will only work in Sony's HD camcorders and VTR's. On the other hand, all DVCPro formats can use the same tapes. DVCPro25 is for 25 Megabit-per-second recording (at 4:1:1 color sampling, same as DV). DVCPro50 is for 50 Megabit-per-second recording (at 4:2:2 color sampling, which is about the highest you want to go before reaching the insanity of uncompressed 4:4:4). DVCProHD is Panasonic's HD format, which runs at 100 Megabits per second.

Why do I need so many DVCPro tapes for HD recording? I thought they were 66 minutes each! - A 66-minute DVCPro tape will only yield 66 minutes in DVCPro25 format. In DVCPro50, the tape records at twice the speed of DVCPro25, which yields only 33 minutes per tape. DVCProHD runs at twice the speed of DVCPro50, yielding only 16.5 minutes per tape. Regardless of this inconvenience, the medium-sized "66-minute" DVCPro cassettes are still the cheapest way to go for HD

- Many rental houses do what's called a 3-Day Week. This means that if you rent for a full 5-day week, they only charge you for 3 days. Some rental houses go so far as to have a 10-day Month, but those are very rare exceptions.

Hey! It won't let me choose the P+S Technik Pro35 adapter for my DVX100 package! - That's because the DVX100 must use the Mini35 adapter. The Pro35 is for full-size 2/3" CCD cameras only.

- EPK stands for Electronic Press Kit. An EPK is usually either a BetaSP tape, VHS tape, or DVD-R of trailers, clips, interviews, etc. that are sent to advertising agencies, newspaper critics, television news, etc. A PPK is a Paper Press Kit, which gets sent with the EPK to news organizations, critics, even theatres that are booked to run the film. EPK's and PPK's are necessary items if you'll be attending film markets. A PPK is also usually required for film festival

Page 17: Advanced Budget Template

- Even if you're releasing your movie on film, it's pointless and stupid to edit a trailer on a flatbed. The easiest and most versatile way is to edit non-linear in SD or HD resolution, and then blow-up the finished trailer to 35mm. FLAT and SCOPE are the two types of trailers you will need. FLAT trailers go onto films projected with Flat, or Spherical, lenses (example ratios: 1.37:1,1.66:1, 1.85:1). SCOPE trailers go onto films projected with Cinemascope, or Anamorphic, lenses (2.35:1 ratio.) The reason these are separate is because Scope trailers must go through an optical squeezeing process to make the image 2x taller than it is wide. When projected, the anamorphic lens unsqueezes the image, yielding that big, beautiful, wide-screen image that we all love. :-) Note that none of the ratios mentioned are 16:9, or 1.78:1. Many people don't know that 16:9 is NOT a theatrical image ratio, so if your film is 16:9, be aware that in a Flat trailer, some of the top and bottom will probably be blocked
