Whether you come to Johns Hopkins for professional or personal enrichment, you are embarking on a journey to become someone new. And, just as our students are bravely reshaping the landscapes of their lives, Johns Hopkins’ Advanced Academic Programs (AAP), a division of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, has dedicated itself to being nimble and forward thinking, while keeping true to the core reputation and tradition of excellence that has defined Johns Hopkins University for decades.

Above all, AAP’s goal is to create new and innovative academic programs, as well as educational and social events that give our students the structure and opportunities they need to advance in a personal and professional capacity.

A variety of part-time master’s degree programs, dual and combined degree programs, graduate certificates, and master’s fellowships are offered through AAP.

On-site courses are offered in the evening and on Saturdays to fit our students’ busy lives. AAP is spread across four sites: the Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland; the Washington, DC Center near Dupont Circle; the Montgomery County Campus in Rockville, Maryland; and online.

Many AAP students have the opportunity to integrate online coursework into their graduate study. Some programs offer their entire degree online; others provide online courses but require in-person course work as well. AAP online courses offer busy students the advantage of flexibility, while also providing the same quality instruction and high-level of interaction found in traditional classrooms at Johns Hopkins.

AAP also recognizes that students’ educational journeys can take many paths. For those who desire lifelong learning, AAP offers two non-credit options: Odyssey and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

For more than 20 years, the Odyssey program has been the region’s lifelong-learning partner. If students want to pursue a passion, cultivate a hobby or master a job skill, Odyssey offers a wide selection of courses, workshops and lecture series delivered by top-notch JHU faculty and community experts. Odyssey doesn’t have grades or exams — just learning for the sake of learning.

Johns Hopkins’ commitment to serving the semi-retired and retired student population began in 1986 with the launch of the Evergreen Society. In 2008, the Evergreen Society became part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute — an organization that has established affiliates at universities round the country. Osher at JHU is a membership community providing a vibrant educational and social environment with a rich array of courses, lectures, and activities held during the day.

We currently have students from 86 countries. Some students earn their degrees fully online from their home countries. But many choose to earn their degrees on a student visa at one of our three US sites. To receive an F-1 visa, students in AAP must be enrolled in a minimum of three courses in the fall and spring semesters (only one of the three courses may be taken online).

Each program employs a different mix of faculty members to suit the unique needs of its students and to ensure that they receive a well-rounded education.

Situated in the heart of Washington, DC, The Johns Hopkins University Bernstein-Offit Building is just two blocks from the Dupont Circle metro stop. This is the main administrative office for Advanced Academic Programs. Admissions, Registration, Career Services, Student and Faculty Services, and Information Technology are located here.

Facilities/Services: The Washington, DC Center offers a dynamic learning environment that includes a Library Resource Center, faculty and student lounges, 31 classrooms and seminar rooms, distance-learning classrooms, three computer labs, and an executive meeting room. The DC Center also houses the DC Learning commons—a space designed to enhance networking and accommodate a broad variety of learning styles, including self-study, group-study and technology-enhanced study.

Situated in Baltimore, Maryland, the beautiful and sprawling Homewood campus is the main campus of Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The Homewood campus is home to a large and diverse student population of undergraduate and graduate students.

Facilities/Services: The Milton S. Eisenhower Library, located on the Homewood campus, is the university’s principal research library and the largest of a network of libraries at Hopkins. AAP students also have access to the Student Union.

Online courses offer the busy student the same Johns Hopkins education that our on-ground students receive but with several advantages:

Flexibility — Online students don’t commute to a physical classroom. Instead, they work inside a course management system to complete assignments and interact with instructors and classmates. There are due dates for course work, but students can log in to the course management system at their convenience.

Excellent Instructors — All AAP courses are taught by highly accomplished instructors. Online courses allow AAP to expand our faculty pool beyond the DC/Baltimore area, offering students the chance to work with excellent instructors from all over the country and the world.

High levels of interaction — Online students communicate with their instructors and classmates through discussion boards, group assignments, and the occasional live online event.

Located in one of the nation’s leading biotechnology clusters, the Montgomery County Campus at the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center has become a major educational resource for Montgomery County and the surrounding Washington, DC, area.

Economic analysis is no longer exclusive to academia and Ph.D. specialists. It has become a ubiquitous, rapidly evolving discipline that demands people who can interpret economic data and use it to inform business and government policy. This program teaches students skills in economic reasoning, and in constructing and estimating economic models through the use of econometrics and other quantitative techniques.

This program is intended for biotechnology professionals who want a career beyond the laboratory within an existing biotechnology organization or for those who dream of starting a new biotechnology enterprise. The curriculum provides students with the interdisciplinary foundation to address the enterprise and regulatory challenges organizations face in the biotechnology industry.

This degree offers practical and applied knowledge, taught by social scientists who study effective communication and the practitioners who use it. Electives engage students by having them tackle real-life communication issues, develop usable communication skills, and build a strong portfolio. This degree offers students a scientifi c foundation in spatial data modeling, analysis, geo-visualization, and enterprise GIS architecture. This entirely online program teaches the latest trends in the GIS fi eld using a multimedia delivery scheme. Students will gain invaluable experience in GIS web-based application development in a cloud-computing environment.

Students of this program are driven to confront the complexities of the 21st century security environment, and are given the knowledge and tools to help shape the American response. Students analyze military challenges, the intricacies of economic interdependence, and the security implications of energy dependence and resource scarcity.

This program is a joint offering with the Whiting School of Engineering. Experts from both schools prepare students for careers in either bioinformatics or computational biology within industry and government organizations. Graduates will have the educational foundation to interpret complex biological information, perform analysis of sequence data using sophisticated bioinformatics software, and program software when needed.

Grounded in biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology, this program allows students to delve into basic science, applied science, and lab science, with an industry focus. Graduates are prepared to engage in research, lead lab teams, create and apply research modalities to large projects, and take the reins of management and marketing decisions.

This program gives students the tools to examine governmental and social institutions in our society, explore areas of reform, and effect change. The program maximizes the synergy between the study of politics and practical work experience. The degree was designed for working adults with specialized skills in a particular fi eld but who want a broader perspective of government to position them for leadership in politics and administration.

This program prepares students to become leaders in the data revolution. Students will develop expertise in analytical methods that are increasingly relied upon by government agencies, non-profi t organizations, and the private sector. The curriculum provides students with a broad set of foundational skills in statistical analysis.

Graduates of this program have a fi rm grasp of the science related to the changing climate, and possess deeper insights into energy production, delivery, and consumption for both traditional and sustainable/renewable energy systems. Students are equipped with the technical and management skills needed to become highly competent and ethical professionals capable of leading societal responses to the challenges of climate change.

Students explore natural resources management, policy making for sustainability, and scientifi c solutions to environmental problems. Graduates of this program emerge with a combination of expertise in science and policy that enables them to assume key positions in public and private entities responsible for safeguarding our environmental future. This is a unique concentration in the Master of Science in Biotechnology Program—students earn the MS degree while building a more competitive medical school application. The innovative curriculum includes advanced science academic coursework, teaches application strategy, and provides support in the form of advice and mentoring throughout the medical school application process.

Graduates of this program are equipped with the strategic skills needed to solve real-world governance and policy issues. Students are educated in the fundamentals of public management: policy analysis and evaluation, fi nancial management, economics and fi scal policy, and public policy and administration. The curriculum is designed for working professionals in the government and nonprofi t sectors.

This degree transforms students into trained professionals ready for jobs in federal, academic, and industry work settings. The curriculum covers issues such as compliance with food and drug law, managing clinical development and testing of drugs and biologics, the manufacturing processes necessary to bring a product to market, and understanding the intricacies of intellectual property and licensing involved in the product development process.

Whereas most graduate programs ask students to become more and more specialized, the MLA program expects its students to both broaden and deepen their educational experience. Students work with an advisor to tailor the program to their own professional and intellectual interests, exploring fi elds including history, religion, literature, philosophy, political science, the humanities, music, art history, and the performing arts.

master of arts inmuseum studies

This program emphasizes the role of technology as a pervasive aspect in today's museum, examines new models of education, exhibition, and business strategies, and explores the role of the museum as an agent of social change. The degree prepares current and future museum professionals to be the visionary leaders of museums in contemporary society. A certifi cate in Digital Curation is also offered by the program.

Note: This program is fully online, with the exception of a required two-week intensive seminar, which is held in Washington, DC, or another location organized by the program.

This program is designed to benefi t both current and aspiring research practitioners. Upon completion of the degree, students will understand how the fi eld has evolved and its relevance to government initiatives; have profi ciency in the management of sponsored research programs, including record-keeping and compliance reporting; know how to effectively compile, review, and evaluate research proposals; and will understand all aspects of the pre- and post-award processes. Students customize their degree by choosing two of three tracks: program administration and facilitation; fi nancial management of sponsored programs; or compliance, legal, and regulatory issues.

This nine-course graduate degree follows an online/ low-residency format featuring online courses and brief onsite Residencies. The program aims to create the next generation of writers and editors who will help the public understand increasingly complex issues in science, medicine, health, nature, and technology. Our graduates succeed as authors, freelancers, reporters, editors, or teachers, work at prominent publications, and build journalism or communication careers at agencies, non-profi ts, or companies. A fi ve-course Graduate Certifi cate is also offered in Science Writing.

Designed for middle and secondary science teachers, as well as curriculum and instructional leaders, this certifi cate, offered jointly with the School of Education, strengthens content knowledge and pedagogic techniques in bioscience, as well as teaches new approaches for effective bioscience instruction in the classroom. Students analyze recent research on bioscience education, and refl ect on their learning and practice.

Advanced economic modeling, forecasting, analysis of rapidly incoming data, and econometrics have become the backbone of decisions made in governments, international organizations, and businesses. The Post-Master’s Certifi cate in Quantitative Methods in Applied Economics is intended for those who already hold a master’s degree in economics or in allied fi elds, and who wish to expand or update their knowledge.

This certifi cate, offered through the MA in Museum Studies Program, aims to advance the education and training of museum professionals worldwide in the emerging fi eld of digital curation. It will prepare current and aspiring museum professionals to manage the growing volume and variety of digital data of long-term value that museums are now producing, acquiring, storing, and sharing with researchers, educators, and the public. It will train students to work with digital collections, exhibitions, and research data that will ensure the longevity of our global cultural heritage of which museums are the stewards.

The Certifi cate in Government Analytics provides students with the knowledge and skill set needed to perform sophisticated data analyses, draw substantive conclusions and communicate results for the purpose of improving the functioning of government. Through the use of cutting-edge tools and skills, students will be able to address contemporary political, policy and governance challenges.The certifi cate can be completed by students seeking a stand-alone credential in analytics, or by those who wish to supplement one of their other degree programs, such as the MA in Government, MA in Public Management or MA in Global Security Studies.

Designed for students who are interested in intelligence, whether as national security professionals or as citizens and taxpayers, this certifi cate will help students gain a sophisticated understanding of how various intelligence disciplines work together, and how intelligence relates to government and policy operations. The Certifi cate can stand on its own as a credential or students can pair it with the MA in Global Security Studies, MA in Government, MS in Government Analytics, or MA in Public Management. Two Intelligence Studies courses may count towards the degree elective requirements.

This certifi cate is designed for graduates of the Master of Liberal Arts Program, or graduates of comparable master's programs. It empowers students to stoke their intellectual curiosity beyond graduation, and provides lifelong learners the opportunity to take new or special courses from a favorite instructor, engage in stimulating and dynamic discussions in the MLA seminars, and cluster courses for professional development.

This certifi cate offers students expertise and understanding of the broad range of threats to United States security in our new century. It draws on experts in government, international relations, bioscience, and military affairs in order to provide students with the tools to analyze threats that challenge US security, at home and abroad.

iif certificate in forecasting

The International Institute of Forecasters, the pre-eminent professional organization in the fi eld of forecasting, has approved two sequences of Applied Economics Program courses as meeting requirements for awarding its Certifi cate in Forecasting Practice (see advanced.jhu.edu for more information). This Certifi cate recognizes achievement of IIF-established standards for those planning to enter the fi eld of forecasting.

This online certifi cate equips students with the knowledge they need to pursue the new opportunities created by the expanding demand for spatial data and systems expertise. The fi ve-course certifi cate program explores the principles and real-word applications of GIS in a convenient, fully online course format. Students will acquire a scientifi c foundation in spatial data modeling, analysis, and visualization.

Students take fi ve courses to complete the Graduate Certifi cate in Science Writing. A residency course is optional for certifi cate students. This credential will allow students to gain the skills necessary to become successful writers and editors in health, technology, medicine, nature, space, energy, or other fi elds.

post-master's certificate inseQuence analysis & genomics

To fi ll the need for scientists trained in new sequencing technologies, Johns Hopkins has created this post-master's certifi cate. It is geared toward individuals that have masters or doctoral degrees—and already have an extensive grounding in biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology—but need practical training in the bioinformatics tools for large-scale sequence analysis and genomics, and the skills to design experiments and analyze data.

application processStudents may apply throughout the year and begin study in most programs during any of the three semesters (fall, spring, or summer)**. Applications are accepted year round for all programs, however, all applicants are strongly encouraged to complete the application process three months before the start of the desired semester.

2. Upload any materials required for the program (including statement of purpose, resume and/or recommendations).

3. Pay the $75 application fee.

4. Send official transcripts through an electronic, secured system or the postal mail.

5. If international, send international evaluations of coursework and TOEFL (if required).

6. No GRE is required for any program except for some in the MA in Communication program (visit advanced.jhu.edu to learn more).

committee revieWThe Admissions Committee is composed of faculty from the program of interest. They assess the application and its supporting documents. All materials must be received prior to the Admissions Committee review. Academic background, including personal, professional, and field-related experience and achievements, and any program-specific criteria are all considered in this review. After reaching a decision, the Admissions Office will notify the applicant via email.

yelloW ribbon programAAP also participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs to eligible veterans. AAP will offer a $500 grant to 10 individual graduate students* enrolled in a degree program during each academic year.
