The site is located within Green Belt land, with a number of designations surrounding the site including Conservation Areas, Areas of Nature Conservation, Scheduled Monuments and Listed Buildings. One Anaerobic Digester with ancillary development was proposed within a space occupied by a large barn and an area of hardstanding. Other buildings within the farm complex include livestock buildings and the residential properties of the owners of the farm. A container with CHP and an Emergency Flare were proposed within a space occupied by a small barn.

The assessment found that the visibility of the site was very limited due to the surrounding strong pattern of hedgerows with hedgerow trees and intermittent woodland blocks. The most visible element would be the dome of the digester, while the ancillary development would be screened by the existing buildings. Overall the proposed development was considered to sit well with the existing buildings associated with Old Hall Farm.

The Landscape Strategy, comprising the planting of trees on the exposed side of the site, would help to provide screening, compensate for loss of existing hedgerow, assimilate both the existing and the proposed buildings into the landscape and promote biodiversity.

OLD HALL FARM,

GREAT BARROW, CHESTER

ADAS undertook a Landscape and Visual Appraisal (LVA) of a site comprising a dairy farm and two residential buildings for the development of an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) unit. The aim of this assessment was to identify any potential effects of the proposed development on landscape character and visual amenity and propose a suitable landscape strategy to integrate the scheme into the landscape.
