What is the Community Health Engagement Program?
It is a component of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), funded from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Indiana University in collaboration with Purdue and Notre
Dame, has created CHEP to help assist researchers in translating research findings to the Indiana community by engaging the community to participate in research opportunities.

Promote collaboration among community partners
throughout Indiana to improve research, health and healthcare.
Our Mission
CHEP has a consortium of over 200 community partners that comprise our Community Advisory Council (CAC).

How can CHEP help you?COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIESCHEP organizes forums to strengthen collaborations between community and academia.
EDUCATION AND TRAININGCHEP hosts a series of workshops, discussions and presentations. CHEP also creates a mechanism for disseminating results of community research studies to help educate community and inform policy.
ACCESS TO PARTNERSCHEP provides community members access to a network of over 200 community partners and researchers, including underserved populations who are interested in project collaboration.
SERVICE CORECHEP provides an easily accessible structure for recruiting and conducting clinical studies in primary care practices through the Practice Based Research Networks (PBRNs).

Opportunities and advantages: Working with community stakeholders on your
research agenda• Improved recruitment and retention.• Input on community conditions to inform intervention design and
execution.• Help with interpretation of results, identifying needed interventions and
evaluating outcomes of an intervention.• Accessibility to community resources that support intervention work,
e.g.:
Bus passes, Community resource audits, and Community health promotion plans
• Improved community education/health literacy – Health information well received/better understood.
• Improved translation of scientific findings to the community• Include underserved populations (who are not adequately represented
in research

Researchers have a responsibility towards Indiana community especially
marginalized groups
CBPR helps to eliminate health disparities and environmental injustice.
“Who represents the community at a priority-setting workshop or a county meeting? Who speaks and who is mute?”

The impact of community- based health research on public health
Community-based health research (CBHR)
is essential for addressing the new
public health problems posed
by chronic diseases.
CBHR "guides public health workers who are
engaged in improving the health of populations just as
traditional clinical research guides the actions of
clinicians in caring for individual patients."

How can you invest in community engagement?
• Participate on local councils/committees.
• Assist in the elevation of community concerns
• Create Jobs (hire community members to do some of the work)
• Provide /communicate the results of collected data back to the community
• Engage in activities targeted to children to provide positive influences for children in
the community.
• Assist in Community-based needs assessment
• Plan Strategically.
• Evaluate your research and methodology
• Get training on data collection
• Share your experience, Help your colleagues learn from you
• Partner with community members on the planning of their research outreach events.
