Good evening and welcome to our 27th Annual Academy Awards Night Gala! Every year, Oscar fever builds as we approach the Academy Awards - a celebration of those who receive the highest honors in filmmaking. Tonight, we watch the annual presentation of golden statuettes in Hollywood and also come together to celebrate the Herculean efforts of those fighting on the front-line of HIV/AIDS in our community. On behalf of our Board of Directors, I invite you to come in and walk amongst our golden statues – a living tribute to everyone impacted by this disease.

Each year, UNAIDS (the joint United Nations program on AIDS) selects a theme for World AIDS Day. This year’s theme was “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise” reflecting the challenge of fighting a disease that has become a part of our life fabric. The UNAIDS theme is apropos for Academy of Friends, with 27 years of experience in funding the fight to “Stop AIDS” in our community. Your generous support, as Underwriters, Corporate Sponsors, and Volunteers, allows us to reach more than 200,000 lives affected by HIV/AIDS in our community each year. Academy of Friends is proud to be the vehicle for this fundraising effort. This year, we are “Keeping the Promise” by funding 15 beneficiary organizations - a record number - all focused on providing prevention, education, and direct care services to our Bay Area community.

As you enjoy the splendor and elegance of tonight’s event, please take a moment to reflect on how you wish to take part in the fight to stop AIDS – How can you help keep the promise? The face of this pandemic has changed over 27 years. Today, we live with this disease. It impacts everyone - men, women, and children of all backgrounds. To eliminate it we must all exhibit tremendous courage, commitment, and passion. It is our mission at Academy of Friends to be an exemplary model of volunteerism and leadership – a place where you can connect YOUR commitment, YOUR passion, and YOUR contributions to the great work performed by our beneficiary organizations. THEY are the ones who truly deserve the highest honors tonight.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation to the many restaurants, wineries, designers, and vendors for the incredible food, drink, and entertainment, as well as the contributions and the countless hours spent by our board, committees, volunteers, beneficiaries, and staff to make this event possible. These efforts bring our Gala to life.

So, please, come in. Enjoy tonight’s Gala. Celebrate Life. Empower Hope!

Sincerely,

Alan E. KeithBoard Chair

Dear Friends,

When I first joined Academy of Friends as its Interim Executive Director last spring, I met with one of our beneficiary or-ganizations that provides housing and shelter to formerly homeless people with AIDS. When I asked the average stay of their clients, they replied that ten years ago it was several months and it is now several years. I believe their reply sum-marizes both the joys and challenges that face each of us who are fighting this insidious disease. While we celebrate the lives that have been saved (and honor those we have lost) we now must re-commit to a very different battle - one that secures food, housing, medical assistance, mental health and substance abuse counseling, insurance coverage and employment opportunities for those who will continue to live with HIV/AIDS in an era when other issues have overshad-owed its toll. Your contributions to Academy of Friends and participation in the Gala tonight will help us do just that. The Gala is the culmination of thousands of hours of preparation and the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. There are so many individuals who make AOF work on a daily basis, contributing time, money and energy every day of the year, including: • our beneficiary organizations, who serve those that need it most, often with limited resources • our Underwriters, who enable us to sustain and encourage those working on the front lines of HIV/AIDS • our Corporate Sponsors, many of whom have supported AOF for numerous years • Gala Chair Nanette Duffy, Board member David Miranda and Production Chair Gregg Solem, who created this spectacular Gala conquering significant budget constraints in the process • our event sponsors, food and beverage sponsors and event coordinator, Winslow & Associates • our exceptionally talented and dedicated Board of Directors, especially Board Chair Alan Keith for his calm, reasoned leadership and Vice Chair and Development Committee Co-Chair Scott Miller who works tirelessly throughout the year to raise money. I deeply admire each for their dedication, energy, enthusiasm, and thank them for bringing me into the AOF family. • our many volunteers, some of whom work with us for months, some for days, some a few hours. Their contributions of energy and spirit are truly inspiring. • Teri Storrs, our Development Associate, who supports all of the above, each and every day, with grace. • Aida Sanchez, our Office Administrator, whose “can do” attitude and resourcefulness has often made the impossible possible.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the extraordinary commitment and work of my predecessor, Elisabeth Loeffler, who, amazingly, staffed this organization virtually single-handedly over the past three years. Thank you for coming to our Gala. Please CELEBRATE LIFE by having a very enjoyable evening and EMPOWER HOPE by purchasing one more raffle ticket, offering one more bid on a Silent Auction item, or giving an additional donation to help us continue our vital work. See you next year!

HIV/AIDS UPDATE

Every day in San Francisco, someone is infected with HIV. Every day in Oakland, someone needs help to pay for life-sustaining medication. Every day in San Mateo, an adolescent girl wonders whether she’s been exposed to the virus. Every day in Richmond, a young man struggles to keep his HIV infection a secret from his family.

No part of the world has had a longer exposure to HIV and AIDS than the Bay Area. One of the first regions of the United States to see AIDS have a profound effect on every day life, this community weathered the epi-demic in the earliest years, long before people in most parts of the world knew it existed.

Today, AIDS is the biggest public health disaster the planet has ever seen.

In the poorest parts of the world, HIV is a looming threat to stability and to our humanity. In 2006 more than 4.3 million people were infected with HIV, bring-ing the worldwide total to nearly 40 million. More than half a million of them were under the age of 15. Last year about three million people died from AIDS, leaving behind families without parents, classrooms without teachers, and children without families. In the United States, 1.5 million people have been in-fected with HIV and more than 530,000 have died since the start of the epidemic. Approximately 1.2 million in the U.S. are living with HIV/AIDS – the highest number the country has ever seen. Antiretroviral therapy has radically altered the course of the disease and kept people with HIV alive. But 40,000 people in the U.S. were newly infected with the virus last year. African Americans account for 50% of new HIV infections, although they comprise only 12% of the population, and at least half of new infections occurred in people under the age of 25. It is estimated that one-quarter living with HIV in the U.S. do not know it, reducing their treatment options and complicating HIV prevention.

27TH ANNUAL ACADEMY OF FRIENDS GALA | 6

The State of California is ranked second in the nation in cumulative AIDS cases, surpassed only by New York. In San Francisco, the number of new HIV infections has remained relatively constant, between 800 and 1,000 in-fections, most in gay men, for the past five years. Since 1998, there has been a State of AIDS Emergency in Alameda County for African Americans, where the lack of resources continues to frustrate prevention efforts directed at some of the most vulnerable populations.

Because of its long history with HIV and AIDS, many of the pioneering interventions used to fight the virus began in the Bay Area, from grass-roots community or-ganizing for patients’ rights to syringe exchange to pre-vent infection for intravenous drug users. Because we have endured the worst of this epidemic for the longest period of time, we have learned best how to confront it with education, with treatment, and with public policy.

Your generosity will help dozens of Bay Area organiza-tions prevent new infections and support people already infected with treatment education, nutrition and medical care.

2007 ACADEMY OF FRIENDS BENEFICIARIES

Over the last two decades, Academy of Friends has distributed $6 million to more than 60 organizations serving men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS.

A rigorous grant review process determines which HIV/AIDS service agencies receive proceeds from each year’s Academy of Friends Gala. With the assistance of a panel of community advisors, the Beneficiaries Committee selects a diverse group of organizations providing direct services to people living with HIV/AIDS or providing HIV prevention edu-cation programs. In our 27th year, AOF is working to raise more than $500,000 for our beneficiaries, including agencies designated by the Kile Ozier Founder’s Award and Jay Luque Award for Outstanding Volunteers winners, as well as the Geoffrey Etienne-Giacomazzi Holiday Grant recipients.

We are pleased to announce the 15 Bay Area organizations that have been selected to receive grants from proceeds of our 2007 Gala. Each organization is dedicated to providing HIV prevention, education and/or direct care to people af-fected by HIV/AIDS. These agencies provide a wide range of services reaching people throughout the Bay Area.

• AIDS Legal Referral Panel – San Francisco, a two-year grant for 2007 and 2008 to provide seed money for ALRP’s new HIV/AIDS Insurance Protection Project by funding 50% of the expenses for an in-house attorney working directly with clients at risk of losing insurance benefits & funding.

In honor of the founder of Academy of Friends, the Kile Ozier Founder’s Award is presented annually to pay tribute to those who exemplify the spirit of volun-teerism in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Each year, the winner is asked to des-ignate a Bay Area HIV/AIDS service agency to receive a $5,000 Academy of Friends grant.

This year, the Academy of Friends Board of Directors is proud to announce two winners of this prestigious award: Claire Eugenia Gerndt, Jr. and Keith Wetmore. Both Claire and Keith are avid volunteers for several HIV/AIDS organizations in the Bay Area, and both have designated the San Francisco AIDS Foundation to receive their $2,500 unrestricted grants.

Claire, a loan officer and long time employee of Wells Fargo Bank, is a model volunteer who gives tirelessly to organizations working to end the pandemic and

human suffering caused by AIDS. She currently works regularly with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Project Open Hand, San Francisco Food Bank, AIDS\LifeCycle, and California AIDS Rides (predecessor to AIDS\LifeCycle). Her warm-hearted good nature and dedication to living a life spent sharing her time and talents with others, is an inspiration to all who have the pleasure to work with her.

Keith, Chair and Chief Executive Partner of Morrison & Foerster LLP, has, through his own work and as part of the MoFo team, contributed for almost 20 years to the fight against HIV and AIDS. In the mid-1980s, Keith helped organize teams of lawyers at MoFo who wrote wills and durable powers of attorney for PWAs, handling several dozen cases himself, as part of the important work of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel. He personally organized and incorporated a number of HIV-related nonprofit corpora-tions in San Francisco, including The Names Project. He helped direct many of those organiza-tions, including The Academy of Friends, to other attorneys within MoFo over the years who were generous with their time as part of the firm’s award-winning pro bono program. He just completed six years of service on the board the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, chairing its finance committee for half that time. “And he recalls his first Gala, the second time it was held, when AOF was named “Friends of the Golden One Whose Name Must Not Be Used.”

About the San Francisco AIDS FoundationCommitted to ending the pandemic and human suffering caused by HIV, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation develops innovative solutions, combining evidence-based strategies with long-term community experience to fight the disease. SFAF provides direct services to thou-sands of people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS, supplies information about HIV treatment and related issues, promotes HIV prevention and awareness in the community, and advocates for sound HIV/AIDS policies at all levels of government.

2006 Geoffrey Etienne-Giacomazzi Holiday Grants As part of its annual grant-making program, Academy of Friends makes several small, special purpose grants to Bay Area HIV agencies for year-end and holiday programs through the Geoffrey Etienne-Giacomazzi Charities Fund. This fund honors Geoffrey Etienne-Giacommazzi, a long-time supporter and former Board Chair of Academy of Friends. In 2006 Macy’s West matched Academy of Friends’ funds so that we were able to double the number grants award-ed - $40,000 in total grants. 2006 grant recipients included: AIDS Emergency Fund, Children’s Hospital, Dolores Street Community Services, East Bay Agency for Children, Food for Thought, Lyon-Martin, Meals of Marin, Project Open Hand, Rainbo Community Center, San Mateo County AIDS Project, and UCSF Positive Health Program.

2007 JAY LUQUE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERISM

Since 2001, Academy of Friends has presented the Jay Luque Award in memory of Jay Luque, a long-time, dedicated gala volunteer. Jay’s beautiful spirit lives on through the annual presentation of this award that recognizes other volunteers who have demon-strated extraordinary dedication to Academy of Friends. The award is accompanied by a $2,000 grant to be given to a Bay Area HIV/AIDS organization of the recipient’s choice.

The 2007 Jay Luque Award is presented to Lynn Lukow, for his continued support of Academy of Friends. For several years Lynn has guided the organization’s Board of Di-rectors through its annual retreat. During that time, the Board has developed a clear mis-sion statement that guides the organization through its fund raising and grant distribu-tion processes. Lynn has also worked extensively with the Board of Directors on setting a strategy for growth over the next 10 years. An avid art collector, Lynn has also opened his home for Academy of Friends fundraising events on many occasions.

Following a distinguished career as head of Jossey-Bass Publishers, Lynn Luckow has focused on organizational and community change, serving as transition executive and consultant to business and non- profit enterprises, and conducting research on building vital communities in the U.S. A true believer in “practic-ing what he’s published,” Lynn has served on or consulted to over 30 nonprofit boards. Honored in 2000 as the top nonprofit board chairman in the U.S. by the National Assembly of Health and Human Service Organizations, he was recognized with its Excellence in National Board Leadership Award.

Lynn has designated Project Open Hand to receive a $2,000 unrestricted grant from Academy of Friends.

About Project Open HandSince its inception, thousands of volunteers from all walks of life have come together to help prepare, package and deliver over 5 million meals to thousands of men, women and children living with and affected by AIDS and other critical illnesses or disabilities. Not one day of delivery has been missed, no eligible client has ever been turned away and no waiting list has ever been maintained.

Presenting Sponsor Levi Strauss & Co.

Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO.) and the Levi Strauss Foundation have been leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS for over 24 years. LS&CO. was one of the first corporations to address HIV/AIDS in the workplace, include HIV/AIDS in its corporate grantmaking agenda, and en-courage employees to partner with local non-profit organizations working to fight the disease. All over the world there are Levi Strauss & Co. employees volunteer-

ing with HIV/AIDS organizations – including Academy of Friends – individually or as part of one of the Company’s 66 Community Involvement Teams.

Levi Strauss & Co. and the Levi Strauss Foundation have awarded over $37 million in grants. Funding is concentrated on prevention programs that serve women and youth. Grants are focused on efforts that combat the stigma and discrimination confronted by those who are, or are suspected of being HIV positive. In addition, the Levi Strauss Foundation, Tides Foundation, and the National AIDS Fund created the Syringe Access Fund to support the availability of clean syringes as a means of preventing HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C.
