Annual Report July 2009-June 2010

Dear Friends of Saint Catherine Academy,

As we begin our twelfth school year, our hearts and minds are filled with the memories of the support of so many generous people during the past school year. The year was marked with so many highlights with only a few showcased in this newslet-ter and annual report. Our enrollment continues to grow, our students continue to thrive in this special environment and our benefactors continue to support our mission in record numbers.

We are grateful for this support as it allows us to continue to deliver on our mission to students who do not have the financial means to attend. Enrollment increased to twenty in 2009-10 with students from West Haven, Fairfield, Bridgeport, Redding, Weston, Newtown and Trumbull. We continue to offer our specialized program to students regardless of their ability to fund their education. The financial challenge is great—but with the generous support of so many; we successfully raised over $500,000 in 2009-10.

The hallmark of the year, however, was the growing number of volunteers who offered their time and talents to enhance our programs. Through the leadership of Jeanie Tisdale, we partnered with Malta volunteers on the Library/Media Center project headed by Virginia Dwyer-Aoyama and the Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich project headed by Judy Miller. These two efforts brought over 25 new volunteers to Saint Catherine in 2009-2010. Additionally, we partnered with Malta on the annual Duckie Derby which was chaired by Kelly Luff Weldon, our newest SCA Board member and Liz Tamarkin. We also had the addition of Eileen Blees, who taught physical education and Jessica Burns, who worked as a classroom assistant. Both these volunteers were referred to Saint Catherine Academy through St. Pius X Parish. Sr. Henry, Sr. Stephanie and Sr. Nancy were regulars in our classrooms, tutoring Math, Language Arts, or teaching sign language. Gina Barber volunteered for her eleventh year as our Art teacher and Bill Lytton has become the official photographer of Saint Catherine Academy. Kyle Tisdale, Alyssa Mocco, Rita Sabo and Janet Gordon are individuals that we regularly turn to for a variety of activities.

Our annual Scholarship Dinner, “A Celebration of Service” recognized the leadership of Jeanie and Tom Tisdale and Gina and Al Barber. Common to both couples is their abounding energy in support of our mission and their willingness to challenge others to join in the effort. This year’s effort was chaired by Chris Herman, a member of SCA Advisory Board and Nancy Fontana, a parent of one of our students. The chairs were joined by a terrific committee that made planning almost as much fun as the event itself.

We continue to receive support from the Inner City Foundation for Charity and Education for partial scholarships for 8 students from Greater Bridgeport. Grant support for a variety of projects came from TD Bank, The New Canaan Foundation, The William Pitt Foundation, The Daphne Culpepper Foundation, David and Eunice Bigelow Foundation and the Congregation of Notre Dame. The Knights of Columbus local councils, state council and supreme council all continue to provide significant financial support of our mission.

In addition, I would like to thank our Board, especially Charles Chiusano, chairman for their strong support on our behalf. Finally, we are grateful for the support we receive from the Diocese of Bridgeport, most specifically from Bishop Lori, Nancy Matthews, Chancellor, Dr. Margaret Dames, Superintendent of Schools and Martin Tristine, Director of Finance.

The future looks bright. On behalf of the students and staff of Saint Catherine Academy, please accept my heartfelt appreciation for your continued support and generosity. We begin the new school year renewed in spirit and focused on the future.
