• Prune Hybrid Tea (large flowered) and Floribunda (cluster flowered) roses this month.Do not prune Shrub or Rambler roses as they flower on last year’s wood. Give allroses a good feed Toprose is excellent as it contains trace elements promoting stronggrowth and good flower production.

• Herbaceous plants should begin to show signs of growth this month. Scatter some‘Chicken Pellet’ food around them, fork this in and mulch over with some compost orchippings to keep in them moisture and keep weeds down.

• Put in supports for the taller growing herbaceous plants tie them up as they grow togive support.

• Prune Hardy Fuchsia to 6’’ and top dress with compost. • Cut back hard the coloured stems on Cornus and Willows this will encourage new

growth from the base and keep the plants bushy and give great ‘stem colour’ nextwinter.

• Start off Begonias or Gloxinia tubers in trays of compost indoors. • Harden the sweet pea seedlings off outside bringing them out as the days warm up

• Plant the first of your seed potatoes but keep an eye on the weather and protect anynew growth coming through the soil from frosts.

If you ask any Mother what her favourite Mother’s Day was, it will nearly always include memories of her family being gathered together with her, children’s home-made cards and a family meal. So why has Mother’s Day become such a commercial event nowadays? It’s easy to feel pressurised to show love in terms of expensive presents and over-priced cards.Mother's Day has its origins in the medieval church calendar: it is always the middle Sunday in Lent and was traditionally the day on which people would return to their ‘mother’ church and girls working as maids would be allowed the day off to return to visit their mothers, homes and families. Any gifts they took home were probably limited to a bunch of wild flowers picked on the way or a home-made cake.So why not return to these simpler ideas to make your Mum feel special? It’s often easier today to spend money rather than time on something or someone.Many mothers have in their box of treasured possessions a card (or several!) made by their children when small. Children’s drawings, or their hand-prints on the card, are just fantastic. No shop-bought card could ever compete with these. But there is no reason why teenagers or adults can’t make cards for their mothers. You don’t have to be a craf ting expert! Draw a picture or use a

photo and write your own words inside, telling your Mum that you love her and why. It’s something she’ll treasure. It takes much more thought and effort to do this than pop into the newsagents and your Mum will know this!As far as gifts go, there is nothing wrong with f lowers f rom your garden. A hand-picked daffodil on the breakfast-in-bed tray is lovelier than a bouquet delivered

by a van. And even quite small children are capable of baking cakes, buns or a simple pudding with a little help. Or how about framing a favourite family photo - or a series of three in a row - showing children at different ages and stages?Mother’s Day was traditionally a time for

family gatherings - but this doesn’t mean you have to book an expensive restaurant or leave one person cooking up a meal for a crowd. Different people can bring different parts of the meal, some one could do the starter, the main course could be split and someone else could do the pudding, making it a joint shared occasion. It doesn’t even have to be lunch; af ternoon tea is also a very good alternative. A variety of sandwiches and little home-made cakes would be wonderful! And if you can’t manage any of the above and are far away f rom your Mum on Mother’s Day, just make sure you pick up the phone and tell her how special she is to you and how much you love her.

Silverdale W.I. The Silverdale W.I started off their new year meeting with a most interesting speaker.Mr Peter Bryant is the Gloucestershire Federation W.I. County Secretary - a most unusual job for a man as Peter explained at the beginning of his talk. His talk was entitled "My Journey to County Secretary" and with the use of a screen Peter showed members how he had pro-gressed from being in the R.A.F. to National Secretary of the Pigeon Fanciers' Association with a detour working for the National Trust on the way. Eventually he interviewed for his present job and, to his surprise got it.For our monthly competition members were asked to bring along their unusual Christmas presents - this provided some very interesting exhibits - the competition being won by Janet Brett with her very royal musical biscuit tin. The vote of thanks was given by Jean Butt who then reminded members that we would not be holding a February meeting owing to problems with our venue. However, we shall meet again on Thursday 15th March at the Hucclecote Methodist Chuirch Hall, Carisbrooke Road, Hucclecote, meeting starting at 10 a,m, Our speak-er will be Pam Street on the subject of Women of the Goldrush. All members and visitors welcome.
