A=ALI SISTER A PREMIERSALE STANDOUT

By Kelsey Riley

Fledgling bloodstock agent Daniel Creighton took a swing at

the top of the market at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale in

2016, spending ,220,000 on behalf of owner John Dance on the

sale=s highest-priced filly. The transaction could hardly have

worked out better, with that yearling going on to become the

six-time Group 1 winner Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Creighton,

along with his partner Josh Schwartz, are hoping to feature on

the leaderboard at the same sale on Sept. 1 and 2 as sellers,

with six yearlings set to go under the hammer as part of their

Salcey Forest Stud draft. Those include a filly by promising first-

season sire Cotai Glory (GB) (lot 322) who is a half-sister to

multiple group-winning sprinter A=Ali (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}), a

,35,000 graduate of the Premier sale in 2018.

The March-born filly is poised to provide her breeder Andrew

Davis with a cozy return; through Creighton, Davis bought her

dam, the Motivator (GB) mare Motion Lass (GB), for just

9,000gns while carrying her at the Tattersalls February Sale.

Four months later A=Ali won the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot

followed by the G2 Prix Robert Papin and the G2 Flying Childers

S. A sales ring score, however, would come with a touch of

sadness, as Motion Lass died at the height of A=Ali=s powers.

DONCASTER TO OFFER EARLY MARKETCLUES By Kelsey Riley The start of the racing season, and in fact the yearling sales

season itself, may have been badly impeded by the coronavirus

pandemic, but that didn=t stop Goffs UK=s Premier Yearling Sale

graduates from getting off to a flying start once things finally did

get underway. One of the fastest from the gate was The Lir Jet

(Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}), whose debut victory three days after

racing=s resumption on June 3 led to a private deal with Qatar

Racing and a subsequent victory in the G2 Norfolk S. 16 days

later. It was the second straight year that a Premier graduate

had taken that Royal Ascot feature, following on from A=Ali (Ire)

(Society Rock {Ire}) in 2019, and it was the first of the sale=s two

title defenses of the meeting, with Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal

Force {Ire}) taking the mantel from Advertise (GB) (Showcasing

{GB}) in the G1 Commonwealth Cup an hour later. Cont. p3

SHE’S VERY STRONG AND STRIKES ME

AS A 2-YEAR-OLD TYPE.

SHE’S PROBABLY GOING TO BE VERY

SIMILAR TO HER BROTHER IN REGARDS

TO TRIP AND PRECOCITY.Daniel Creighton on A’Ali’s half-sister by Cotai Glory

Daniel Creighton of Salcey Forest Stud Cont. from p1

AFrom day one she=s always been a nice filly; when she was

born she had quality and class,@ Creighton recalled of the Cotai

Glory filly. AShe's always been very easy to deal with. The mare,

unfortunately, colicked and died which was terrible for all of us.

And that was after A=Ali won the Norfolk. So it was very

disappointing.@

The Cotai Glory filly is just the third foal out of the mare and

her only filly.

AIt's the only chance to have the bloodline if somebody wants

to buy into it, which is quite important,@ Creighton said. AIt's

hard not to offer a filly like her because she's quite valuable. She

has a lot of quality, a very nice head. She's a good mover, very

easy mover in the lunging ring. She floats across the ground,

she's very strong and she strikes me as a 2-year-old type. She's

probably going to be very similar to her brother in regards to

trip and precocity.@

While Davis will feel the loss of Motion Lass for some time,

another mare, Solfilia (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), has likely helped ease

the pain. She was picked up by Creighton and Schwartz for

4,500gns at Tattersalls July in 2018, and her 2-year-old at the

time, Bodhicitta (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), was Grade I-placed in

America in May. Davis opted to retain Solfilia after bidding

stalled at ,340,000 during the Tattersalls Online August Sale.

Also among Davis=s offerings at the Goffs UK Premier Sale is a

colt from the first crop of Time Test (GB) (lot 312) who was

bought back for 19,000gns as a foal. He is the first foal out of

Midnight (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), whose dam is a full-sister to Rock

Of Gibraltar (Ire).

AYou=d be hard-pressed to find a horse that can walk better

than this horse,@ Creighton said. AHe=s got fantastic action.@

Creighton also pointed to a filly by Kodiac (GB) (lot 52) as a

potential head-turner. She is the third foal out of Yukon Girl (Ire)

(Manduro {Ger}), a half-sister to the dam of Group 1 winner and

sire Mount Nelson (GB). Cont. p3

Daniel Creighton of Salcey Forest Stud Cont.

AKodiac is riding the crest of a wave right now,@ Creighton said.

AHe=s had a fantastic year with Campanelle, Nando Parrado and

Hello Youmzain. This filly is a bit weak at the moment but she

has a very good back page. For me she=s a very good physical

and just a very nice filly.@

AWe have a very nice Bungle Inthejungle colt (lot 265) as well,@

Creighton added. AHe=s really strong, very typical of the stallion

and probably very much in the Doncaster mould, but with scope

as well.@

Creighton spent his formative years between Ireland, England

and Spain, honing his eye for a horse alongside his father Eddie

Creighton, who was a trainer. He dabbled in various facets of

the businessBincluding administration at HRI and as a multi-

lingual race commentatorBbefore his keen interest in pedigrees

and the sales scene led to he and Schwartz founding Creighton

Schwartz Bloodstock in 2011. The pair took on Salcey Forest

Stud around the same time for a handful of their own mares,

and it has since snowballed into a full-fledged commercial

operation.

While Creighton will likely be long associated with Laurens, he

said he is keen to prove that he isn=t a Aone-trick pony.@ Other

sales purchases include the G3 Cornwallis S. winner Abel Handy

(Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) and the Cornwallis-third Jouska (GB) (Cable

Bay {Ire}).

He also bought John Dance=s recent G1 Prix Morny third

Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who was making his

second start after breaking his maiden first out. Creighton

described Dance as Agreat to work for.@

AHe loves being involved in the training of the horses,@

Creighton said. AAnd when it comes to buying horses we work

together very well. He's into statistics and numbers and he likes

to put things to an algorithm; I am more about looking at the

physical of the horse. He has been very supportive of mine and

Josh=s business and he's taken it to a different level. I have to

also give a mention to all the other clients that I have as well.

They've all been very good and most of them are very good

friends and we've had success with them, too.@

Goffs UK Premier Sale Cont. from p1

The Lir Jet would go on to finish second to fellow Premier

graduate Ventura Tormenta (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) in the G2

Prix Robert Papin and was runner-up again in the G1 Keeneland

Phoenix S.

Such is the quality of last year=s Premier Sale intake, however,

that it could be someone other than The Lir Jet or Ventura

Tormenta who winds up top of the heap. Supremacy (Ire)

(Mehmas {Ire}) proved to be well-named with a four-length

score in the G2 Richmond S. on July 30 that earned him a rating

of 115. Cont. p4

Method (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) looked a smart type when taking

the Listed Rose Bowl S. at second asking in July, and the filly he

had beaten by 4 1/4 lengths on debut, Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan

{Ire}), came roaring back to take the Listed Star S. and last

weekend won the G2 Prix du Calvados. These are among nine

graduates of last year=s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale to have

already won stakes, and they set a strong precedent for the 423

yearlings set to go under the hammer at this year=s edition of

the sale at Doncaster on Sept. 1 and 2.

AIt=s been a wonderful year on the track and we have a

wonderful bunch of horses,@ said Goffs UK=s Managing Director

Tim Kent. AIf we were in a normal year we=d be very confident

we=d have a wonderful sale but it=s difficult to know what to

expect with the way everything is going, but the market has held

up remarkably well in Europe up until now. The breeze-up sales

went better than anyone expected and the horses in training

sales have had plenty of demand. So we have to hope that

continues. We=re confident we have a nice draft of horses and

the stallion index is reading well. There have been a lot of

photos on social media and videos online and just looking at

those you think >blimey, that=s a nice horse...that=s a nice

horse...= and they=re by the right stallions and from some good

farms, so we=re hopeful it will all come together.@

Three of the sale=s likely heavyweights will come on day two,

beginning with a Starspangledbanner (Aus) half-brother to

Ventura Tormenta (lot 313) from Baroda Stud. Given the Group

2 update supplied by his elder brother, that one is likely to

provide a hefty return on the i40,000 paid by the Tweenhills

team Redwall Bloodstock at Goffs November last year.

Just a few lots later Salcey Forest Stud=s Cotai Glory half-sister

to A=Ali (lot 322) will grace the ring. And the very last horse

through the ring is likely to ensure that bidders stick around; he

is a full-brother to the 2016 sale topper and G3 Hackwood S.

winner Yafta (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) (lot 423) offered by

Highclere Stud, the same draft that sold Yafta as well as Golden

Horde here. Others that appeal on paper include a No Nay

Never daughter of the G3 Round Tower S. scorer Dingle View

(Ire) (Mujadil) (lot 170); and an Invincible Spirit (Ire) colt out of

G3 Firth Of Clyde S. winner Distinctive (GB) (Tobougg) (lot 173).

Rising Star sire Wootton Bassett is a Premier Sale graduate | Coolmore

Goffs UK Premier Sale Cont.

Additionally, there is a Kodiac (GB) filly out of a half-sister to

Equiano (Fr) (lot 195); a Night Of Thunder (Ire) colt out of a full-

sister to champion sprinter Fleeting Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit

{Ire}) (lot 346); a Siyouni (Fr) filly out of a half-sister to GI

Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Turf victress Queen=s Trust (GB)

(Dansili {GB}) (lot 361); and a Lope De Vega (Ire) son of the

Group 3-placed Royal Empress (Ire) (lot 380).

With the consequences of Britain=s low prizemoney levels

being increasingly felt, it is perhaps more important now than

ever to provide owners with incentive to get in or stay in the

game, and races like the ,180,000 Goffs UK Premier Yearling

Stakes open to all graduates of this sale can go some distance

towards that. The winner of this year=s contest at York on

Aug. 20 was the Dandy Man (Ire) filly Happy Romance (Ire), who

cost ,25,000 at Doncaster a year ago and is the first horse

owned by the McMurray family. It is likely no mistake, either,

that trainer Richard Hannon targets the race so heavily, and

Happy Romance gave him his fourth win in it in the past five

years. Happy Romance was scratched from Saturday=s G3

Prestige S. but will doubtless get her shot at black-type soon.

The Premier Yearling Sale S. has not only been taken by some

quality fillies, but also by three of the best colts to ever come

from the sale: Wootton Bassett (GB), Acclamation (GB) and the

latter=s son Dark Angel (Ire). That triumvirate sits atop a

burgeoning group of successful sires to have emanated from this

sale.

Acclamation was a ,33,000 purchase by his trainer Gerald

Cottrell in 2000 under this sale=s former guise as the St Leger

sale and was a member of the first crop of his sire Royal

Applause (GB). Acclamation capped a productive juvenile

campaign the following year with a victory in the ,200,000 St

Leger Yearling Stakes.

After an interrupted 3-year-old campaign he blossomed to

take the Listed Starlit S. and the G2 Diadem S. at four, but it was

in the breeding shed where his legacy was truly cemented.

While his best runner was the superstar sprinting filly Marsha

(GB), he has left behind a stacked roster of colts to carry on his

line, thus far led by Dark Angel and Equiano (Fr) and with this

year=s first-season sensation Mehmas (Ire) potentially poised to

join them. He can also lay claim to the very useful sires Lilbourne

Lad (Ire) and Harbour Watch (Ire), the latter of whom is

responsible for this season=s impressive G2 King Edward II S. and

G2 Great Voltigeur S. scorer Pyledriver (GB). And with young

horses like Aclaim (GB) and Expert Eye (GB) still to have their

first runners, the Acclamation sireline looks likely to continue to

thrive.

Dark Angel, meanwhile, has already firmly established his own

branch of the Acclamation line. Like Acclamation was, Dark

Angel was a member of the first crop of his own sire and was a

,61,000 purchase from the 2006 St Leger sale. He won the sales

race for trainer Barry Hills in 2007 before going on to take the

G2 Mill Reef S. and G1 Middle Park S. before retiring upon the

conclusion of his 2-year-old campaign. Dark Angel=s first crop,

interestingly, would include the G1 Diamond Jubilee and G1 July

Cup S. winner Lethal Force (Ire), the sire of current Goffs UK

Premier Yearling Sale poster boy Golden Horde. Cont. p6

THAN ANYONE EXPECTED AND THE

HORSES IN TRAINING SALES HAVE HAD

PLENTY OF DEMAND. SO WE HAVE TO

HOPE THAT CONTINUES.Tim Kent

Goffs UK Premier Sale Cont.

Dark Angel looks in these early days to be making a similar

mark on the breed to his sire, with Gutaifan (Ire) proving his

prowess in his second year with runners and with Estidhkaar

(Ire) and Markaz (Ire) each having gotten off to a promising start

with his first runners this season.

And while his best runner to date, Battaash (Ire), will not get

the chance to pass on his genes as a gelding, Dark Angel still has

the Goffs UK graduate and champion sprinter Harry Angel (Ire)

waiting in the wings with his first foals this year. Another Group

1-winning sprinter to come from the sale with a chance to make

his mark as a sire is the Phoenix S., Commonwealth Cup and Prix

Maurice de Gheest scorer Advertise (GB), a ,60,000 graduate

who covered his first book at the National Stud this year.

Already a sire on the rise, Wootton Bassett is set to enter a

different stratosphere, having been purchased by Coolmore just

prior to getting his second Group 1 winner in the G1 Prix Jean

Romanet victress Audarya (Fr). A ,46,000 graduate of 2009,

Wootton Bassett won the sales race midway through a perfect

2-year-old career which was capped by a G1 Prix Jean-Luc

Lagardere score and French champion 2-year-old honours. With

Coolmore having pledged the support of its impeccable

broodmare band and with Wootton Bassett=s best son Almanzor

(Fr) set to have his first runners next year, there looks to be

plenty more to come in the Wootton Bassett story.

With such opportunities on the line, the shrewdest buyers will

not miss this week=s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. And as the

first yearling sale during this pandemic-stricken season, all eyes

will be on the figures as an indication of what is to come.

AThe big thing for us will be clearance rate,@ said Kent. APeople

have brought these horses here to sell and we=re providing an

opportunity for that to happen. The way we=ll measure the sale

is going to be different; the normal metrics will go out the

window and it will be very much about clearance rate and feel.

AIf vendors are happy with what they=re achieving and

purchasers are saying they can=t buy horses, for us that=s a good

feel for this sale. We=re normally worried about comparative

metricsBaverage, turnover, median, that sort of thing. It=ll be

less about that this year and more about clearance rate and the

ability to get horses sold.@

WITH ROSS DOYLE Bloodstock agents Peter and Ross Doyle have developed quite

an affinity with the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, having

plucked Group 1 winners like Canford Cliffs (Ire), Olympic Glory

(Ire), Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) and Barney Roy (GB) from its catalogues.

The Doyles= haul from last year=s sale includes the G2 Prix Robert

Papin winner Ventura Tormenta and the Goffs UK Premier

Yearling Stakes winner Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}).

Ross Doyle Q&A Cont.

KR: You have purchased four winners of the Goffs UK Premier

Yearling S. in the past five years, most recently Happy

Romance this year. Is that the kind of result you=re looking for

when you go to Doncaster, a

precocious horse who can collect

those kinds of purses early on?

RD: Its great when you can win

the race dedicated to a particular

sale; it confirms that our team

are doing a very good job

selecting the yearlings along with

the great job Richard Hannon and

his team have done with Happy

Romance. The Premier Sale is

known for precocious types but

you would hope they can train on

as 3-year-olds like Canford Cliffs,

Olympic Glory and Barney Roy,

for example, in the past.

KR: Happy Romance is the first horse raced by the McMurray

Family. How important is a result like that at a time when we

need to incentivize owners to stay involved and when

prizemoney levels are such a concern?

RD: Happy Romance is repaying her owners in spades

considering she cost ,25,000, not

only by winning the Weatherbys

Super Sprint but also the sales

race, taking her earnings to

,177,600 so far for the season.

It=s a huge help to get the owners

something back on their initial

investment which will hopefully

spur them on to reinvest during

these tough times for everybody.

KR: You have a long list of

successful purchases from the

Premier SaleBthe likes of

Canford Cliffs, Olympic Glory,

Tiggy Wiggy, Barney Roy, and

Ventura Tormenta most

recently. Can you tell us what you recall about some of those

horses at their times of purchase?

Ross Doyle Q&A Cont.

RD: A lot of the horses you mentioned had a presence about

them, strong but balanced with good movement, temperament

and they all came from top nurseries. The team at Goffs UK

along with the vendors obviously do a fantastic job selecting the

right types to suit the sale.

KR: What first-season sires are you looking forward to seeing

the progeny of this year?

RD: On the back of our old friend Mehmas doing so well this

year with his first crop, it will be nice to see the Aclaims being by

Acclamation as well. I have seen some very nice yearlings on the

farms recently by Caravaggio, Churchill, Profitable and in

particular by Ribchester; they look very racy.

TELECASTER DOMINANT IN THE GRAND PRIX Patience has long been a particular virtue of Hughie Morrison and Sunday=s G2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville was testament to his ability to play the waiting game as Castle Down Racing=s Telecaster (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) fully came of age. Sent straight to the front by Christophe Soumillon, the 13-10 favourite whose previous foray to France had resulted in a four-

length success in ParisLongchamp=s G3 La Coupe June 25 was always content untroubled at the head of affairs on this deep surface.

Setting down for his plunge up the straight, the bay was on his own at the end of this 12 1/2-furlong feature as he powered to a 6 1/2-length verdict over last year=s runner-up Soft Light (Fr)

(Authorized {Ire}), who edged out last year=s winner Ziyad (GB)

(Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) by 3/4 of a length.

AThere were doubts beforehand as to whether he would stay this distance or not, as he had run a moderate race over it in the Derby, and also about the ground but going down to the start he gave me a lot of confidence,@ Soumillon commented. AHe was very relaxed, so I decided to go on and he handled that very well--it was no effort for him. Turning for home, I had them covered and he quickened very nicely. Hughie Morrison is very good at handling older horses, which boosted my confidence.@

First coming to prominence when beating Too Darn Hot (GB)

(Dubawi {Ire}) on good-to-firm in York=s G2 Dante S. last May, Telecaster was last of the 13 to run in the Derby and beat only one rival on his only subsequent 3-year-old outing in Sandown=s G1 Eclipse S. Returning with an encouraging third behind the subsequent G1 Prince of Wales=s S. hero Lord North (Ire)

(Dubawi {Ire}) in the June 7 G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Haydock, he stayed at that 10-furlong trip to gain a perfect confidence-

Morrison was not ruling out a tilt at the G1 Prix de l=Arc de

last year and anything after the Dante was always going to a big

step. He needed putting away for next year and thanks to the

patience of Mark Weinfeld and his sister Helena we were able to

do that. He=s always been a very exciting horse, but we were

concerned that the ground might be too deep for him.

Christophe says he can go on any ground, but he=s more

comfortable with a bit of cut. The Arc has exceptionals horses in

it this year and he would have to improve to feature--I=m not

Stunning Spirit | Scoop Dyga

ENTERPRISING SPIRIT Mickael Barzalona was at his tactical best on Sunday as he

steered Haras de la Gousserie=s Stunning Spirit (GB) (Invincible

Spirit {Ire}) to the far-side rail and an all-the-way win in

Deauville=s G3 Barriere Prix

Quincey. Third over this course

and distance last time under top

weight in the Aug. 16 Grand

Handicap de Deauville, the bay

who was bought from George

Strawbridge=s draft for just

i65,000 at last year=s Arqana

St-Cloud Arc Sale was the subject

of an unusual move here as he

was taken across the track to find

livelier ground. That was decisive,

as the 17-10 favourite was always

comfortably on top and stretched

away in the closing stages to

record a 3 1/2-length success from We Ride the World (Ire)

(Orpen).

AThis was his target and Mickael had walked the course

beforehand and insisted that it is much better on the far side,

like it was in the Grand Handicap de Deauville,@ the owners=

representative Pauline Chehboub said. AHe travelled very nicely

and quickened well--he deserved that win.@

Stunning Spirit has been at this festival on three previous

occasions when in training with Freddy Head, finishing fourth in

the G3 Prix de Meautry over six furlongs in 2017, a close third in

this a year later and second when

again tried in this behind Skalleti

(Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) 12 months

ago. This year, he had won

Doha=s Irish Thoroughbred

Marketing Cup, which was a local

Group 2, over a mile Feb. 21 and

been third over seven furlongs in

the G3 Prix du Palais-Royal at

Clairefontaine May 28 and G3

Prix de la Porte Maillot at

ParisLongchamp June 25.

Pauline Cherbourg is hopeful

there is still time for him to gain a

stallion posting somewhere. AWith his pedigree and race record,

one day he deserves to stand as a sire but in the meantime he

will be entered in the [G2] Prix Wildenstein and [G2] Dollar and

there is Doha again in February,@ she added. AAs long as he

shows he wants to run, we=ll probably keep going.@ Cont. p11

The others are the GII Dixie S. scorer Utley (Smart Strike), the

GIII Arlington H. scorer and GI Arlington Million runner-up Just

(Thunder Gulch) and the G3 Winter Derby winner Wissahickon

BREATHTAKING LOOK ON TOP IN FRANCE Stuart Williams trainee Breathtaking Look (GB) (Bated Breath

{GB}) emerged from the handicap ranks to garner last term=s G3

Sceptre S. at Doncaster and broke a six-race winless streak with

a game success, ploughing through deep mud, in Sunday=s G3

Barriere Prix de Meautry at Deauville. The 5-year-old had been

in the money in five outings this year, falling short in Royal

Ascot=s June 20 G1 Diamond Jubilee S., and went postward for

this first overseas venture coming off a fourth in Goodwood=s

July 31 G3 Oak Tree S. and a second in Newbury=s Aug. 15 G2

Hungerford S. last time. She had previously run subsequent G1

July Cup hero Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) to a length when

second in June=s G3 Abernant S. at Newmarket. The eventual

winner was swiftly into stride and stalked the fast-breaking Air

de Valse (Fr) (Mesnil des Aigles {Fr}) in second beyond halfway

in the straight six-furlong contest. Coming under pressure to

tackle that rival with 300 metres remaining, the 7-10 favourite

was ridden clear inside the final eighth to hit the line with a

3 1/2-length advantage. Air de Valse kept on resolutely once

headed to withstand the late rally of Marieta (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}),

by 1 1/2 lengths, for second with eight lengths and more back to

the remainder.

AShe came into the race with a good record in England and the

[heavy] ground didn=t seem to be of concern for her trainer,@

said winning rider Pierre-Charles Boudot.

He added, ASix furlongs over that ground for a mare who had

done well over seven [furlongs] seemed ideal. All the signs were

positive for her to win again and she delivered nicely. She is very

tough and never gave up.@

AWe were very hopeful beforehand, but the only worry we had

was that it didn=t stop raining the whole time she was there,@

added Stuart Williams. AThe staff said it has poured down for 24

hours and I thought they might switch it off the turf onto the all-

weather track because it was that wet. She=d run well on soft

ground before, but we didn=t really know about that [heavy]

ground. She stays seven, she won a Group 3 over seven last year

and she=s done it really well.@ Looking ahead, the trainer added,

AI think we=ll try and go back to the [G3] Sceptre S. at Doncaster,

which she won last year, and I should imagine that will be her

next run. Her owner=s very enthusiastic and I think he=d like to

breed from her next year so it=s nice to get her Group 3 win this

HAPPY POWER EDGES THE SUPREME Beaten under two lengths when fourth in the G1 Sussex S. and

under a length when third in the G2 Celebration Mile last term,

King Power Racing=s Happy Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) proved

his liking for Goodwood when getting a first pattern-race

success in Sunday=s G3 Ladbrokes Supreme S. Keeping tabs on

the leader Toro Strike (Toronado {Ire}) throughout, the 9-4

favourite was sent past that fellow Goodwood specialist by

Silvestre de Sousa with a furlong remaining and battled gamely

to prevail by neck, with Escobar (Ire) (Famous Name {GB}) a

length away in third.

AThe race didn=t worked out as I expected--I was determined

to jump out and go forward and do my own work from the

front, but he got a bit upset in the gate and didn=t start well,@ de

Sousa explained. AThey didn=t go very fast, so I was able to catch

up and he felt like he was just doing enough in front. It=s just

very tiring ground and hard work and I couldn=t go any quicker

than the speed I was going at the finish.@

DUBAWI=S SISTER TO JOURNEY A NEW

RISING STAR Granted a much easier task after the 15-8 market-leader Lucid

Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}) refused to enter the stalls, George

Strawbridge=s Indigo Girl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) nevertheless cut a

real dash on debut as she earned TDN Rising Star status at

Yarmouth on Sunday. Due to start the 10-3 second favourite for

the Norfolk venue=s British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies= Novice S.

over a mile with Khalid Abdullah=s Lucid Dreamer having

registered a promising debut win at Kempton, the full-sister to

former celebrity Journey (GB) was slowly away and last of the

five remaining runners throughout the early stages. Rab Havlin

was cajoling at halfway, but the John Gosden trainee picked up

impressively to surge to the lead with 1 1/2 furlongs to race

before staying on strongly under hand riding to record a

three-length verdict over Final Thought (Ire) (Sea the Stars

{Ire}), with Mystery Show (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) half a length

away in third.

AShe wears a hood, as she can be a bit lively at home but

actually she was really well-behaved today,@ her rider

commented. AWe thought she might do things back-to-front, as

her sister used to and it took her a long time to settle, but she

was nice and relaxed and there was a lot left in the tank at the

end. She was racing behind the bridle, but when I showed her

daylight she picked up through the gears and off she went. The

ground is a bit dead, but she handled it well and switched off.

Her sister was at her best over a mile and a quarter and a mile

and a half, so hopefully she=ll get that sort of trip--it's definitely

within her compass if she switches off like she did here.@

Journey, who also sported a hood throughout most of her

career, enjoyed her finest hour when beating the high-class

Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) by four lengths in the 2016

G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. She first burst on

to the scene when making all in dynamic fashion to take

Newmarket=s Listed Princess Royal S. by eight lengths in

September 2015 prior to finishing runner-up on her first tilt at

Ascot=s Champions Fillies & Mares. She also won the Princess

DELIA BUSHELL RESIGNS FROM THE

JOCKEY CLUB Jockey Club Group Chief Executive Delia Bushell, who was appointed to her post last July, has resigned from The Jockey

Club, Sporting Life reported on Sunday afternoon. A review

found evidence to support allegations of bullying coworkers

and racist comments. A report was submitted by an independent barrister to the sub-committee of the board last week. In her place, The Jockey Club has appointed Nevin Truesdale the acting group chief executive.

AThe board of The Jockey Club announces today that Delia Bushell is to stand down as group chief executive with immediate effect,@ The Jockey Club said in a statement to the PA news agency. AThis follows the completion of an independent review into a wide range of allegations about her conduct, which the board concluded made it untenable for her to continue in the role.

AAs part of this review, an independent barrister interviewed 19 witnesses including Delia. He submitted a detailed report to a sub-committee of the board comprising Dido Harding, Julia Budd and Justin Dowley on Sunday 23rd Aug. in which he concluded that there was evidence to support a number of the allegations of misconduct including bullying behaviour towards colleagues, inappropriate racist comments and sharing offensive materials.

AThe sub-committee of the board agreed with his conclusion and decided that there was a basis for disciplinary action against Delia including on the grounds of gross misconduct. This recommendation was accepted by the full board of The Jockey Club.@

would love to do, as I=ve rattled the crossbar in most of them.@

AUDARYA CAMP MULLING OPTIONS Group 1 winner Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) will make

her next start in either the G2 Moyglare >Jewels= Blandford S. at

The Curragh on Sept. 13 or the G1 Prix de l=Opera on Oct. 4,

trainer James Fanshawe has revealed. The winner of the Aug. 23

G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet last out, Audarya was second in a

Saint-Cloud listed affair as a 2-year-old in September of 2019.

AShe is in the Blandford on Sept. 13, but that might come a bit

quick and she would have a penalty in that,@ said Fanshawe. AI

would really like to go back to France for the Opera. I hope she

can keep in the same form until October 4. It was great to win

on Sunday though and we are still enjoying that.@

Salonlove posted an Aug. 15 debut fourth going 6 1/2 furlongs

at Cologne in her only prior start and stepped forward to claim a

first win of any kind in this black-type bow. Positioned along the

fence in a close-up third after an alert getaway, she was slightly

awkward when angled outside passing the quarter-mile marker

and kept on strongly under mainly whipless rousting in the

closing stages to break through in impressive fashion.

AShe looked like a big baby when she ran first time, but she has

improved a lot in her morning work since that run,@ said winning

rider Clement Lecoeuvre. AShe=s a nice filly and, hopefully, she

can improve some more.@

Salonlove is the latest of 11 living foals and third stakes scorer

breaking slowly, in his Aug. 2 debut going 7 1/2 furlongs at this

venue last time and was quickly away to occupy a handy role

along the rail in third from the outset here. Making headway in

the straight to loom large with 300 metres remaining, the 8-5

chalk was shaken up for control soon after and ridden out to

comfortably hold Augustinus (Ger) (Territories {Ire}) by 1 1/4

Second choice on the board at 3-1, Shock Action earned his

first black-type badge in the G3 Niigata Nisai S. at Niigata on

Sunday. Positioned in the center of the track in fifth for the

backstretch run, he began to inch into contention on the bend

despite still racing wide. In a contested third 600 metres out, he

motored up toward the leaders inside the final quarter mile,

seized command a furlong from home and won going away by

1 3/4 lengths. Blue Symphony closed to take second, a half-

Third in a Hanshin newcomer affair on July 18, Shock Action

handled good ground to take his second start over course-and-

PHOENIX BUYS UP STAKE IN PIERATA

By Bren O'Brien

Phoenix Thoroughbreds has purchased a significant stake in

Aquis Farm=s first-season stallion Pierata, adding to its existing

involvement in fellow first-season stallion Exceedance, who

stands at Vinery, as well as young Aquis stallion Invader.

In what has been a period of significant deal-making for

Phoenix, its investment in Pierata, the Group 1-winning son of

Pierro who debuts at Aquis New South Wales farm at $44,000

(inc GST) this spring, comes days after it and Aquis sold

promising 3-year-old Prague (Redoute's Choice) to Kia Ora Stud.

Kia Ora also recently took a share in Phoenix

Thoroughbreds-bred G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Farnan (Not A

Single Doubt), which the pair will continue to race in partnership

with Aquis. The Pierata deal strengthens the connection

between Aquis, with the two outfits racing several other colts in

partnership, including Saturday's G3 Ming Dynasty S. winner

Holyfield (I Am Invincible).

Aquis and Phoenix have purchased 11 yearlings in partnership

in the past three years, while the pair came together to secure

Snitzel's Group 1-winning son Invader in 2018, and he has

served two seasons with Aquis.

Phoenix has already booked two mares to Pierata this year

with the likelihood that there will be several other of its

30-strong band to support him in 2020 and beyond. The quality

of the Phoenix band is likely to be bolstered by recent retiree

Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible), a dual Group 1 winner.

AWe are thrilled to have bought into such an exciting young

stallion. When the opportunity arose, we jumped at the chance

to be involved," Phoenix Thoroughbreds CEO Amer Abdulaziz

said. "You only have to glance at his race record to see what a

talent he was on the track and as a son of Pierro, we are

confident he can follow in his father=s hoofprints as a leading

stallion. We will be supporting him with plenty of our mares as

well as in the sales ring.

AIt=s extra special we get to face this exciting future with Aquis

who have been fantastic partners. We have had plenty of

success together and we are confident that will continue long

into the future.@

Aquis, Australia's fastest growing stud operation over the past

five years, will stand 18 stallions in 2020 across its Queensland,

New South Wales and Victorian base.

Aquis' Managing Director Shane McGrath said the Pierata deal

would be of huge benefit to the young stallion.

AAs MD of Aquis Farm it is indeed a privilege to welcome

Phoenix as our partners in Pierata. Phoenix have invested

heavily in the Australian breeding industry and with their quality

breeding stock we are confident Pierata will benefit greatly from

our partnership,@ he said.

Phoenix recently issued a statement saying it was fully

committed to its bloodstock and racing interests in Australia.

The statement was prompted by its decision to step away from

racing horses in the United Kingdom, and reports that it had

been effectively locked out of French racing after court

testimony in New York linked Abdulaziz to the OneCoin

cryptocurrency scandal.

Aquis and Phoenix could be set for a massive spring with

Farnan, which they co-purchased for $600,000 as a yearling

after he was bred by Phoenix, currently second favourite for the

G1 Golden Rose S. Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott,

Farnan was super impressive in winning a recent Randwick trial

with ease.

Holyfield, who is trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace,

has emerged as a serious Spring contender after his impressive

all-the-way win in the Ming Dynasty S. Bred and sold by

Segenhoe Stud, the colt out of Group 1-winning mare Hurtle

Myrtle (Dane Shadow) cost Aquis and Phoenix $800,000 at last

year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

REMEMBER THE CONTEXTOF 2019 DERBY DQ

The Week in Review, by T.D. Thornton

After a federal appeals court on Friday upheld a district court's

decision to dismiss a lawsuit that sought to reverse the

disqualification of Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) from

first place in the 2019 GI Kentucky Derby, co-owner Gary West

told TDN that even though he disagreed with the ruling, Ait is

time to move on and the decision will not be appealed.@

Country House (Lookin At Lucky), of course, has been

considered the winner of the 2019 Derby ever since he was

elevated from second to first via the DQ process. So this latest

judgment changes nothing regarding the already-official results.

The court ruling also does not mean that the Churchill Downs

stewards got the call right. The three-judge panel simply

affirmed that the plaintiffs had no legal basis to challenge the

outcome.

What the ruling does mean is that another precedent will get

entered into the law books underscoring how hard it is (and

should be) to get a judge in a court of law to overturn a

field-of-play ruling by an umpire, referee, or board of stewards.

And the decision by Gary and Mary West to not pursue further

legal action does finally lift the miasma of litigious dread that

descends whenever sports and the courts collide.

The Week in Review (cont. from p1)

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (whose members and

executive director Marc Guilfoil were defendants in the lawsuit

along with chief state steward Barbara Borden, state steward

Brooks AButch@ Becraft, and Churchill Downs steward Tyler

Picklesimer), issued a statement after the Aug. 28 judgment in

which Guilfoil said the stewards= decision to DQ Maximum Security

was Aan easy call to make, but a tough day to make it on.@

An Aeasy@ call? I respectfully disagree.

Easy DQ calls in stewards= booths don=t take 22 minutes to

adjudicate. Nor do they customarily keep getting debated 16

months after the fact.

To this day you can find a balanced mix of supporters and

detractors on both sides of the Derby DQ decision. It was a

difficult call then and it remains difficult now even with the

benefit of hindsight. Let=s not revise history to make it seem

otherwise.

As the 2019 Derby gets nudged into the rear-view mirror, it=s

important not to lose focus of what was happening on the

macro level within our industry when the Churchill stewards

decided to make the first disqualification of a winner for an

in-race foul in 145 runnings of the Derby.

No sports official (or board of stewards) ever wants to be the

arbiter whose judgment call alters the outcome of a big game or

race. In America, there=s always been an unwritten rule that

officials Alet the players play@ in crucial contests, even though

referees, umpires, and stewards rarely admit it.

Coupled with that, the Kentucky Derby itself has always had a

high bar when it comes to whether or not the stewards could or

should step in to alter the running order. This dates at least back

to the 1933 AFighting Finish@ in the pre-replay era, when Brokers

Tip nosed Head Play after their jockeys grabbed and whipped

each other in the stretch run. Cont. p4

Page 29: AALI SISTER A PREMIER CLUES SALE STANDOUT · 2020. 8. 31. · He is the seventh black-type winner and third group winner for his sire, who won four times at the highest level including

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 4 OF 9 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • AUGUST 31, 2020

A foul claim by the runner-up rider was dismissed and the

result stood, although both jockeys were later suspended 30

days each.

In more modern times, the 20-horse Derby has become known

as an anything-goes cavalry charge into the first turn in which

jockeys know they have considerable leeway to ride with more

assertiveness because the stakes are so high.

But 2019 was the year when the Derby was run under

shell-shocked circumstances because the sport was reeling in

the wake of the 30-horse fatality crisis that shut down racing at

Santa Anita Park. Tracks nationwide were under intensified

scrutiny, and in the week leading up to the Derby, the sport was

being called out and protested against over equine safety issues.

It was impossible to ignore the national headlines that blared

AHorse Deaths Are Haunting the Racing World Ahead of the

Kentucky Derby@ (Time magazine), AAt the Kentucky Derby,

Prayers for a Safe Race@ (New York Times) and AHorse Safety at

the Kentucky Derby has officials >On the Edge of a Razor Blade=@

(Louisville Courier-Journal).

In fact, Guilfoil himself told the Courier-Journal the day before

the before the 2019 Derby that, AWe realize we=re under a

microscope.@

So while a subconscious ALet >em play@ mindset might have

previously been the unspoken norm for officiating a big race, the

over-arching context of the 2019 Derby was rooted in the

hyper-aware context of safety.

As the nation watched slo-mo replay after replay of the

narrowly averted pile-up off the far turn in the Derby, the

Churchill stewards surely, at some level, must have recognized

that if they didn=t make a call that doled out punishment for the

near-disaster, it wouldn=t mesh with the safety-centric image

the industry had been trying to hammer home on many levels.

Did they get the call correct? That=s always going to be up for

debate.

But let the record reflect that Maximum Security=s historic DQ

was as much a product of the sport trying to come to grips with

the enormous pressures of maintaining safety in an inherently

dangerous setting as it had to do with the colt=s shifting and

drifting while leading the pack off the final turn in the Derby.

Letruska (Super Saver) goes wire-to-wire in the GIII Shuvee S. Sunday at Saratoga.

Derby Doings (cont. from p1)

Attachment Rate is coming off a runner-up effort behind Art

Collector (Bernardini) in the Aug. 9 Runhappy Ellis Park Derby.

AI thought his race at Ellis made him worthy of trying the

Derby,@ trainer Dale Romans said. AThis was his second work

back from that race and we wanted to put a nice five-eighths

Attachment Rate was third in the Mar. 7 GIII Gotham S. and

second in the Unbrided S. at Gulfstream Park Apr. 25.

He was fourth in the May 23 GIII Matt Winn S. and fifth in the

July 11 GII Toyota Blue Grass S.

AHe ran well over the winter in both the Gotham and the

Unbridled,@ Romans said. AHe hung in there pretty well to finish

second behind Art Collector at Ellis.@

Jim and Donna Daniell=s Rushie (Liam=s Map) will skip the

Derby in favor of Saturday=s GII Pat Day Mile, while trainer Todd

Pletcher confirmed Sunday that Bob LaPenta and Bortolazzo

Stable=s Money Moves (Candy Ride {Arg}) will start in the Run

for the Roses.

AThe horse ran well last time and he's been training sharply,@

Pletcher said. AI felt like this is an opportunity that you don=t get

very often, so we=re taking a shot.@

Money Moves opened his career with a pair of wins at

Gulfstream Park this past spring and missed by just a neck when

second stretched to nine furlongs in a Saratoga optional claimer

against older rivals July 25. AHe got sick after his win at

Gulfstream, so he missed some time, and to run a mile and an

eighth off the layoff, I thought he showed a lot of determination

in that race,@ Pletcher said. AIt=s a tall order, but he=s given us all

the right indications that he=s ready to step up and give it a try.@

Money Moves, who will be making his stakes debut in the

Derby, worked five furlongs at Saratoga Friday in 1:00.14

(10/17).

MASTERY=S FIRST YEARLINGS GAINING

PRE-SALE TRACTION by Katie Ritz

Since the start of sales season last fall, comments have

circulated on how Mastery could be the dark horse in his class of

first-crop yearling sires.

There are many unknowns about the son of Candy Ride (Arg),

as he may have never reached his full potential on the track

when an injury forced him to retire prematurely. But his four-

for-four career starts had garnered talk of GI Kentucky Derby

favoritism after dominant performances in the GI Los Alamitos

CashCall Futurity and the GII San Felipe S.

Now in the stud barn at Claiborne Farm, he=s gained attention

early on in his career. His weanling average of $153,272, with

22 of 28 sold, placed him near the top of his class by weanling

averages with a $25,000 stud fee.

His leading weanling, a filly named Shes Bout a Mover, is a

half-sister to GIW Nereid (Rock Hard Ten) and sold to agent

Andre Lynch at the Keeneland January Sale for $365,000. Earlier

in the season, a colt out of Native One (Indian Charlie) and from

the same family as GI Breeders= Cup Sprint Champion Mitole

(Eskendereya) sold for $325,000 at the Fasig-Tipton November

Sale.

AHe=s one of two stallions that stood out to me from the group

of first-crop stallions at the sales last year,@ said Stonehaven

Steadings= Aidan O=Meara. AThe Masterys have a little more

frame and size to them than I would have expected with the sire

line. He=s a decent-sized horse himself and after what he did in

the San Felipe, we never got to see him do a whole lot more, but

the raw brilliance was there. He=s been producing the physicals

that people are looking for and is putting himself in a good

position going forward to be the real deal.@

First-crop yearling sire Mastery at Claiborne Farm

Yearling Mastery colt out of Janis=s Joy | Jennifer Keeler

O=Meara found one Mastery weanling at the Fasig-Tipton

November Sale that he couldn=t leave without. Stonehaven

Steadings went to $240,000 for a colt out of the stakes-placed

Broken Vow mare Janis=s Joy.

AI thought he was one of the top three foals I saw last year,@

O=Meara said. AWe loved him. He was a big, beautifully-framed

foal and looked like a horse with a lot of potential going

forward.@

The yearling is now slated for the Keeneland September Sale

as Hip 1021.

AHe=s developing into the horse you hoped he would,@

O=Meara reported. AHe=s a big, two-turn colt. He=s a magnificent

physical specimen and mentally, he=s solid as a rock. He has that

intangible, special way about him that separates your average

good-looking horse with something that has legitimate class.

He=s probably going to be our top physical at the sale and will be

a standout in Book Two.@

An additional 67 Mastery yearlings are catalogued for the

Keeneland September Sale. At the Fasig-Tipton Selected

Yearlings Showcase, 14 of his offspring will be featured,

including Hip 194, a filly out of GISW and stakes producer Last

Full Measure (Empire Maker), as well as Hip 350, a filly out of

GI Breeders= Cup Filly and Mare Turf Champion Shared Account

(Pleasantly Perfect) and a half-sister to last year=s GI Breeders=

Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Sharing (Speightstown).

Claiborne=s Bernie Sams spoke on the quality he saw in the

mares from Mastery=s first books, and how that has reflected

onto this first class of yearlings.

AWe bred 139 mares to him the first year, and a couple mares

that were in there were the dams of Sharing and of Monomoy

Girl (Tapizar). So he got good support for a horse that stands for

$25,000. I=ve gotten good reports on the yearlings and the few

I=ve seen have been really nice. They=ve been very athletic, well-

conformed, a good size with plenty of bone to them.@

Sams said that an additional 143 and 137 mares were in

Mastery=s next two books.

AHe=s been very popular with the breeders,@ Sams said. AHe=s a

good-looking horse, obviously he=s very much Candy Ride. I

think people like the pedigree.@

His dam, Steady Course (Old Trieste), was picked up by Arthur

Hancock for $20,000 at the 2009 Keeneland November Sale.

AShe was barren at the time, but it=s a really good family and

she was a big, strong, good-looking mare,@ Hancock recalled. AI

thought I=d probably have to pay a little more. I actually came to

find out Garrett O=Rourke at Juddmonte was going to bid on her,

but he got stuck in traffic.@

A few months later, Steady Course=s first foal Clear Sailing

(Empire Maker) became a stakes winner, but Hancock didn=t

have much luck with the mare in her first few years at Stone

Farm until he bred her to Candy Ride in 2013.

Hancock noted, AMy dad had a saying, >A good bull is half your

herd, and a bad bull is all of it. I wanted to breed her to a good

bull and Candy Ride is a good stallion. Mastery was a grand-

looking foal.@

Mastery sold for $425,000 at the Keeneland September Sale to

Cromwell Bloodstock as agent for Everett Dobson=s Cheyenne

Stables. He was sent to Bob Baffert and burst onto the scene

when he broke his maiden on debut by over four lengths in

October of his 2-year-old season. He continued by taking three

consecutive graded stakes wins in the GIII Bob Hope S., the

GI Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity and the GII San Felipe S. by

over a combined 15 lengths.

AHe became a really good racehorse,@ Hancock said. AI think

Baffert thought he had a big shot to win the Derby until he got

an injury and went to stud after that. And now, we wait and see

what happens.@

While it won=t be a long wait before Mastery=s progeny have

the opportunity to prove their worth on the track, Hancock

patiently monitors the development of Mastery=s full-brother

who was born in late May this year.

were in the Derby. If I stay out of his way, maybe he=ll develop

German Larrea=s St. George Stables and Fausto Gutierrez, a

leading owner/trainer team in Mexico, set up a U.S.-base at

Palm Meadows this winter and the operation celebrated graded

stakes success at Saratoga Sunday when Letruska went wire-to-

wire in the GIII Shuvee S. The bay filly assumed control heading

into the first turn and was loose through a quarter in :23.05 and

a half in :46.20. She scampered farther clear on the far turn,

blazing through three-quarters in 1:09.51. In front by five

lengths turning for home, she held on grimly despite drifting in

and out down the lane as Royal Flag closed strongly along the

rail in the final strides.

AShe=s fast,@ jockey Joel Rosario said of the winner. AShe always

fires, but at a mile and an eighth, I didn=t know. But she kept

fighting. I always planned to have a little more left for the end. It

looks like she runs that way, she likes to go. She did it well on

her own.@

Gutierrez added, AShe=s a very special horse because she has a

lot of speed. Going :46 at this distance at this track is very fast.

She=s very special and has a great career in front of her.@

Letruska, who began her career with six straight victories,

including a pair of Group 1 tallies, and was tabbed champion 3-

year-old filly in Mexico last year. She opened her U.S. campaign

with a front-running 4 1/4-length victory in the restricted Copa

Invitacional del Caribe S. Dec. 9 at Gulfstream. Well beaten

when trying the turf for the first time in the Tropical Park Oaks

Dec. 28, she returned to capture an Oaklawn optional claimer

Apr. 16 and two starts later won the Added Elegance S. at

Gulfstream June 27. She pressed Serengeti Empress

(Alternation) on the pace before tiring to fifth in the seven-

furlong GI Ballerina S. last time out Aug. 8.

AAfter the last race in Miami [the Added Elegance], when she

went in :23 and :44 in the one-mile race, I had the idea she

could go seven furlongs,@ Gutierrez said. AI tried to go to the

Breeders= Cup with her [via the Ballerina, a >Win and You=re In=

race for the F/M Sprint]. I know it=s a big jump, bigger step, and

the Ballerina was the only race to give me that perception. That

was a very difficult race and the filly was very nervous here in

the paddock.@

Gutierrez, who was winning his first U.S. graded race, said

Letruska relished Sunday=s added distance and her victory has

him plotting a course to the GI Breeders= Cup Distaff through the

Oct. 4 GI Juddmonte Spinster S. at Keeneland.

AI think the next step would be at Keeneland in a Grade I for

the Breeders= Cup. Two turns is perfect for her,@ he said.

Fausto Gutierrez welcomes Letruska back to winner=s circle | Sarah Andrew

Gutierrez continued, AShe=s a filly that needs speed and

distance. This is obvious in her races here and in Mexico. In

Mexico, she doesn't have the big competition, but she made

very good times. I think this is the kind of race she can run. I

don=t know how many fillies can go with her in :46.

St. George Stable and Gutierrez also campaigns Mexican

champion Kukulkan (Mex) (Point Determined), who was second

in last year=s GIII West Virginia Governor=s S.

Pedigree Notes:

St. George Stable purchased Magic Appeal, with Letruska in

utero, for $100,000 at the 2015 Keeneland November sale. The

13-year-old mare produced a colt by Hard Spun in 2019 and a

colt by Arrogate in 2020. She was bred back to Malibu Moon.

Magic Appeal is a half-sister to Kid Majic (Lemon Drop Kid),

dam of Canadian champion Miss Mischief (Into Mischief). Kid

Majic=s unraced Rosemonde (Indian Charlie) produced multiple

Grade I placed Rowayton (Into Mischief). Magic Appeal is also a

full-sister to Grade I winner J P=s Gusto.

Letruska=s third dam, Malibu Magic, produced Pacific Spell

(Langfuhr), dam of champion Proud Spell (Proud Citizen).

KETNER SWEEPS NJ THOROUGHBRED

FESTIVAL CARDby Brian DiDonato

Dr. Mark Ketner was celebrating a rare feat at the conclusion

of Monmouth=s New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival Sunday--the

Colts Neck-based vet foaled all 10 winners on the card.

AIt was pretty crazy,@ Ketner said. AWe have kind of an unusual

practice. I have a farm practice with a racetrack practice based

here in Monmouth County. Most of the Jersey-breds are foaled

here in Monmouth County, and we=ve just been lucky enough to

have some of the same farms for many years--they=re all good

farms and they=re all right here.@

Highlights of the card included Prendimi (Dance With

Ravens)=s head victory over favorite Golden Brown (Offlee Wild)

in the Charles Hesse III H. for older males around two turns;

heavy favorite Liz=s Cable Girl (Cable Boy)=s seventh win at

Monmouth and second in the Eleven North H. to increase the

6-year-old mares earnings to more than $500,000; and in-form

Royal Urn (Kantharos)=s runaway victory in the New Jersey

Breeders H. for sprinters.

AI=m just very fortunate to have good associates who help at

the farms,@ said Ketner, who also noted that he foaled two

runners-up on the card as well. AWith some of them, we=ve

actually had the stallions, and some of them we=ve bred, and

foaled and then worked on them all the way through their

racing career. In some cases, even after they=re done racing. It=s

a neat little niche.@

Five-year-old Prendimi=s dam Cigno d=Oro (Tour d=Or)

completed a double of her own, as her 3-year-old son Our Man

Luke (Redeemed) broke his maiden one race after the Hesse.

Both horses were bred and owned by Jon Coles=s GJ Stable and

trained by Luis Carvajal, Jr., who also saddled Don=s Marsh (Don

Six) to an optional claiming victory two races later. Coles and

Carvajal campaigned Cigno d=Oro to seven career wins and

earnings of more than $372,000.

The pacesetter was pesky to mistretch, but No Mo= Spending
