LIST OF PIRATES ARRRRRRRRR! CHARACTER NAME & RANK CHARACTER DESCRIPTION COSTUME

SUGGESTIONS

CAPTAIN ‘ONE-EYED WILLY’

SWASHBUCKLER

Captain of the ‘Black Cloud’

REQUIRED

The gentleman Captain ‘One Eyed Willy’ is one of the fiercest fighters on the open sea. He has earned the complete trust of his men

as he is a courageous leader of his crew. This is one loyal and brave captain that would valiantly go down with his ship.

Cream-colored puffy sleeved pirate shirt, dark colored

vest, brown sash type belt, dark pants, boots and a

pirate hat. A fake sword and an eye patch are optional

props. A fake parrot sewn to the left shoulder of the

costume is another optional prop.

JACK BLUEFELLOW

Quartermaster of the

‘Black Cloud’

REQUIRED

Jack Bluefellow is the greedy treasure-seeking man in charge of the ‘Black Cloud’ unless there is a battle approaching. The crew of the Black Cloud doesn’t find this

buccaneer as trusting as the Captain, however, as Jack is known to steer the crew towards trouble…especially if there’s booty

involved.

White puffy sleeved pirate shirt, black vest, red sash

type belt, black pirate pants, boots and a pirate hat. A

fake sword and an eye patch are optional props.

ROWDY STOUTBEARD

First Mate of the

‘Black Cloud’

REQUIRED

This shabby first mate will stop at nothing to get his hands on his next meal. Rowdy Stoutbeard’s appetite dictates his mood

every second of the day. Just make sure this pirate has something to eat and all will

go well under his watch.

Black puffy sleeved pirate shirt. Red sash with black

and white striped pirate puffy knee pants. Black socks

and black shoes. A black or red bandana tied around the

head and a fake pirate earring as a prop. A fake sword or pirate pistol as another optional prop.

JOLLY FLINTLOCKER

The Carpenter of the

‘Black Cloud’

REQUIRED

The charismatic Jolly Flintlocker possesses of the most brilliant minds in the open sea. This buccaneer can repair anything from a

parrot’s beak to the ship’s engine! Just stay on Jolly’s good side, though, because

sometimes too much information can be a dangerous thing!

Cream-colored puffy sleeved pirate shirt, dark brown vest, orange sash type belt, dark brown pants, boots and a

pirate hat. A fake sword and an eye patch are optional

props.

DRAKE ‘TOP COOK’

BREADBEARD

Buccaneer & Cook on the ‘Black Cloud’

REQUIRED

Drake Breadbeard belongs in a King’s palace with his exceptional skills in the kitchen. The crew of the ‘Black Cloud’

doesn’t realize how lucky they are! Drake has a funny quirk…he loves to rhyme his

words while he speaks. He thinks it gets him into a rhythm and makes him cook better. Those around him find it quite hysterical at

times.

Long pirate-style jacket with button up pirate-style shirt underneath. A bandana should be tied around the

head and fake pirate earrings as props.

JOHN ‘HYPER BELLY’

REDBEARD

Helmsman of the ‘Black Cloud’

REQUIRED

John Redbeard is the trusty helmsman of the ‘Black Cloud.’ Nothing can go awry if this buccaneer is navigating through the open

waters. However, never distract John Redbeard or his attention deficit disorder might get him off track…and off course!

Brocade vest with a cream colored puffy sleeved pirate shirt underneath. Long coat, pirate hat with a feather and boots. An eye patch, fake earring, and a fake pirate pistol are optional props.

CHARACTER NAME & RANK CHARACTER DESCRIPTION COSTUME SUGGESTIONS

CROWE ‘ OLE’ ONE-LEG’

RAVENHOOK

Buccaneer & Look Out of the ‘Black

Cloud’

REQUIRED

This blood-hungry tyrant is the look out on the ‘Black Cloud.’ Known to be a prankster,

this buccaneer has made his way to the plank a few times in his pirating career but

always mysteriously manages to find his way back to the ship…unharmed!

Cream-colored puffy sleeved pirate shirt, black vest, green

sash type belt, long black pants, boots and a pirate hat. A fake sword and an

eye patch are optional props.

WALKER D. PLANK

Second Mate of the

‘Black Cloud’

Optional

Walker D. Plank is not your typical pirate! This Second Mate would rather be cuttin’ a rug than plundering. If music can be heard, this pirate will show off some highly skilled

dance moves. Rumor has it that this pirate’s even taken a deck mop out for a tango

dance or two. So watch out if this buccaneer ever makes it to the dance floor!

White puffy sleeved pirate shirt, cream colored vest, white and cream striped

sash type belt, brown pants, boots and a pirate hat. A

fake sword and an eye patch are optional props.

BLADE ‘THE STUMBLER’

BONES

Third Mate of the ‘Black Cloud’

Optional

Blade Bones is the clumsy Third Mate of the ‘Black Cloud.’ Don’t let this klutzy pirate get too close to you for too long! The way things have been going for Dagger lately, this pirate will most likely make the sky fall down next!

Cream-colored puffy sleeved pirate shirt, dark colored vest, sash type belt, dark pants, boots and a pirate hat. A fake sword and an

eye patch are optional props.

ASHE ‘THE DAGGER’ EASTON

Deck Hand of the

‘Black Cloud’

Optional

The outspoken deck hand, Ashe ‘The Dagger’ Easton is a force to be reckoned

with. Any unnecessary messes or scuffles on the deck will land you flat on your back with your ears ringing for days. This is one

deck hand that knows her job and takes control of her scene.

Lace-up pirate style dress, sash type belt and a

matching sash type head band. A fake sword as an optional prop. Rhinestone eye patch and a fake parrot sewn to the left shoulder of the costume are optional

accessories.

All characters can be played by either a male or a female.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HOST Thank you for purchasing the ‘Ahoy Mateys! The Mystery on Bootstrap Bluebeard’s Pirate Ship’ game from mymysteryparty.com! This mystery is a light-hearted and entertaining mystery that allows the children to step into a different character while trying to solve the entertaining mysteries. The party can be a huge success as long as the guests relax and let the mystery unravel during each round. The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues and stuff them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. The Scavenger hunt clues also need to be cut out and put into sealed envelopes (the envelopes are optional). It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round. During the party, your job as the host is to ensure that the appropriate clues are hidden for the scavenger hunt and the envelopes are given to the guests at the appropriate times and most of all – make sure that you and your guests are having a blast!! There are a couple of props you will need to collect in advance and plant at certain places and times during the party (see instructions each round for a prop list). Make sure to read the host instructions for each round prior to the party to ensure that you have everything in place for the big day! This mystery comes with 10 characters. Only 7 of these characters are required with 3 optional characters. All characters can be played by either gender. If you do not have guests for the extra 3 optional characters, simply omit the clues of these guests and any references to these characters in other clues. If you need to have characters added, contact us at [email protected] and we can accommodate your request for a $10.00 fee per additional character. Since you have elected to have this mystery sent to you electronically, simply copy this file out of the PDF, and transfer to any word processing program and delete the clues or references to the omitted character in the other characters’ clues before you print the mystery. You will need the full version of Adobe Acrobat to do cut and paste from the pdf file. If you forget to do this before you print the mystery, discard the clue cards from the omitted character and mark out any clues referencing this character on the other characters’ clue cards. SEE THE GAME INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH ROUND TO GET A COMPLETE LIST OF ITEMS THAT YOU WILL NEED IN ADVANCE OF THE PARTY. THE FINAL SOLUTION ROUND HAS AN OPTIONAL CHARADES GAME – THIS IS THE ONLY THING YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS FINAL ROUND (TO WRITE THE TOPICS ON SLIPS OF PAPER) – SO IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PLAY ALONG AND KEEP THE MYSTERIES AS A SURPRISE, DO NOT READ THE ROUND 3 CLUES UNTIL THE PARTY. If you do not want to know the solution, do not view the final round of clues. For a complete surprise, you can elect the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack option from the mymysteryparty.com site and we will send you the clues in sealed envelopes –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge). THE ROUNDS ARE DESIGNED AS FOLLOWS: The following is a suggestion on how to host your mystery, but it is only

ROUND ONE Avast! We made it to the S.S. Treasure Hunter! Climb aboard mateys! Host Instructions: As the guests arrive, put on their name tags (page 37-38) with scotch tape. At this time, the ‘Jolly Roger Challenge’ can be played (see below). There are 7 mini mysteries to solve during this game. Round one will introduce each of these mysteries to the guests. First thing to do as the host (after the Jolly Roger Challenge) is to read the message #1 from Captain Bluebeard (below) to the group. Then, pass out the round one envelopes to each guest. There will be a mystery clue in each character’s round one clue card for each of the mysteries. For example, Captain Swashbuckler will have a clue for mystery one, Jack Bluefellow will have a clue for mystery two, and so on. Hand the round one envelopes to your guests to start the game. You should also give a copy of the ‘pirate investigation sheet’ to each guest (page 18+) with a writing utensil and give them time to write down all of the clues on their sheets as they’re collected. After the guests have read their round one clues (and have presented their pirate jokes to each other – you can allow them time to their jokes to the group), then hand the first scavenger hunt clue to the Captain (page 16). In advance of the party, hide the remaining scavenger hunt clues (page 16-17) in the locations indicated on the clues. For example, the second clue gives instructions to hide it somewhere in the kitchen. You can make the decision ‘where’ to hide the clue within the kitchen that will be challenging enough for the ages of children at the party yet safe for the children to hunt. Hide the last scavenger hunt clue in the front walkway (note: during inclement weather, this can be hidden immediately in front of the door under a mat, etc.). The round two clues should be placed in the final hiding place as this will end round one and start round two. At the conclusion of the round, before the round two envelopes are opened, the optional game ‘Swabbin’ the deck’ can be played.

Prop list: These are props / items needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready. The round one clues in sealed envelopes and labeled with each character’s name. The message from Bluebeard (below). The scavenger hunt clues should be cut out and put into sealed envelopes (envelopes are optional since they’re hidden anyway). If the Jolly Roger Challenge is played, the materials for the game are required (see below). If the ‘Swabbin’ the deck relay’ challenge is played, you will need the materials for this game (page 16). The pirate investigation sheets for each pirate (page 18-27). MESSAGE #1 FROM CAPTAIN BLUEBEARD CUT OUT AND READ TO THE GUESTS TO START THE PARTY:

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AT THE BEGINNING OF ROUND ONE: The Jolly Roger Challenge The objective is to make a beauty of a Jolly Roger flag to fly on the mast on the S.S. Treasure Hunter! Game Instructions: Have all of the craft items available on a table (listed below). Purchase or cut out rectangles of white paper ~ 10” by 14” or buy cotton material and cut rectangles out of material instead of paper. When the guests arrive, allow them to create their own unique version of a Jolly Roger flag for the S.S. Treasure Hunter using the materials listed below. Equipment needed: Enough white paper or fabric for 7-10 10” by 14” rectangles. Elmer’s glue or fabric glue if fabric is used. Non-toxic markers of all colors, leaves, pieces of felt in all colors, aluminum foil, strips of ribbon, buttons and scissors. Playing time is approximately 20 minutes. *Allow the flags to dry during the party and then the guests should take them home.

ROUND ONE ROUND CLUES Cut out these clues and stuff them into envelopes that are labeled with the appropriate character’s name and the appropriate round. Handing out these envelopes begins round one.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AT THE CONCLUSION OF ROUND ONE: ‘Swabbin’ the deck relay’ Objective Compete to determine which team can work together the best and complete the relay the fastest!

Rules Split the guests into two teams. For an even number – one player may participate in the relay twice (1st and last). A large area for a relay race is needed - preferably outside. Place 4 random items of pirate style clothing (i.e. a pirate hat, bandannas, fake pirate earrings, eye patch etc.) at the end of each 'lane' of the race (the number of items can be changed to fit the number of guests at the party). Optional: you can outline the lanes for the relay race with crepe paper (streamers) weighted down by balloon weights so the guests will know where to swab. You can tie helium filled balloons to the balloon weights to help mark off the ‘lanes.’ Try to keep the types of items even between teams - so don't give one team a bunch of hats while the other team gets all pirate earrings. Line up the guests behind the starting lines and when you are ready, blow a whistle to start the race. Upon the whistle blow, the two competitors in the front of the line from each team will race to the other end of the lane swabbing their balloons down the lanes with their mops. When they get to the other end of the lane, they are to select one of the pirate items of clothing from the pile and put it on. The clothing has to be completely on before they can pick up their balloon and race back to the start/finish line. Each player is to race back to the start/finish line and tag the next teammate in line and hand them the balloon and the mop. This will continue until the last teammate in line of either team

BLADE ‘THE STUMBLER’ BONES– ROUND ONE. Tell yer mateys a joke. A pirate’s life is hard enough without some humor: What kind of socks do pirates love to wear? Arrrrgyle.

Your mystery is number 2. Your first clue is: ‘He is legendary.’

ROUND TWO Host Instructions: At the conclusion of the scavenger hunt in round one, the guests were handed the round two envelopes. Allow for time to read these clues and write them on their pirate investigation sheets before moving on to this round – you don’t want to information overload them! This is the investigation round where the guests will have to put all of the clues together for the 7 mysteries and put their best guess down for the solution to each mystery on the pirate investigation sheets. Instruct the guests to share clues and try to guess on all of the 7 mysteries by using the clues from round one, the clue found in the scavenger hunt, and the clues round on the round two clue cards (below). When they are done, the pirate investigations sheets should be handed in and scored by the host. At this time, the ‘Aye aye. What could me pirate thing be’ game can be played. Prop list: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready. The clues for round two in sealed and labeled envelopes. If the ‘Aye Aye. What could me pirate thing be’ game is played, the cut out squares with tape affixed to the back of them are needed (page 31).

ROUND TWO OPTIONAL ACTIVITY To be played at the conclusion of round two. Aye aye! What could me pirate thing be? Objective: to be the first one to correctly guess the ‘pirate thing’ on yer forehead and / or to not be the last one to figure out what ‘pirate thing’ yer wearing on your forehead! Game Instructions:

Print out the ‘pirate thing’ game sheet and cut out the squares. Affix tape to the back of each square and place a random ‘pirate thing’ sheet onto their forehead. Do not show the players the ‘pirate thing’ that is affixed to their forehead and make sure that there are not any mirrors or highly reflective surfaces in the party room during this game. When all of the guests have a sheet attached to their forehead, the game begins. The guests are allowed to ask each person one and only one ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question (i.e. ‘Am I big or small?’ or ‘Am I living?’) No lying is allowed – that would be cheating - so all guests being asked a question by another player must answer the questions truthfully.

The object is to figure out what ‘pirate thing’ is on the sheet that is affixed to their forehead. If a player has asked every guest at the party a yes/no question and still cannot guess the ‘pirate thing’ on their forehead, s/he may start the cycle over with the first person that they asked a yes/no question and continue until the player can correctly guess the ‘cause of death.’ There is one winner and one loser in this game. The winner is the first to correctly guess the cause of death and the loser is the last standing without a correct guess of the ‘pirate thing’ on their forehead. Equipment needed: a printed copy of the cause of death sheet (page 19). Playing time is approximately 10-15 minutes.

ROUND THREE– THE INVESTIGATION Host Instructions: Ask the pirates to sit in a circle. Hand them their round 3 envelopes. Ask the optional players (i.e. Walker D. Plank, Blade Bones, Ashe Easton - if they are playing) to read their clues first (they were optional players so they don’t have solutions to the mysteries on their cards, but they still have a pirate joke to tell the group.) Instruct the guests to read their pirate joke to the group and then the solution to the mystery. As the solutions are read, the host parent should reveal if anyone answered it correctly and if so, who did – and so on until all of the mystery solutions are read. Then, the final message from Captain Bluebeard should be read to the group.

Prop list: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready. The round three solution cards put into sealed and labeled envelopes. The message #2 from Bluebeard (page 35). If the charades challenge is played, ye will need t’ write the charades’ topics on strips of paper and fold them. Put them into any container ye would like for the guests to draw them from. You will also need some form of treasure or treasure chest for the finale treasure hunt. This can be anything from a bag of gold wrapped chocolate coins to a treasure box made out of a shoe box with brown construction paper filled with toys. This treasure will need to be hidden in the home before the message #2 from Bluebeard is read to the group.

ROUND THREE SOLUTION CARDS Cut these out and put them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate character name. Seal the envelopes. Handing out these envelopes signify the beginning of the final solution round.

***Make sure the final treasures or treasure chest are hidden somewhere in your home before you read the second message from
