Message from Kiwanis International Trustee Ronald E Smith I first want each of you to know that you made an impact on my wife Joanne and I
during our time as your Counselor. Your hospitality was and still is second to none.
We will always consider the Eastern Canada & The Caribbean as Family.
After opening 11 clubs, your final membership for 2018-2019 reached 6,865, an
increase of 6 members from previous year. This is significant, right now growth of
any kind is hard to come by.
You have done well over the past several years opening many clubs and have done a
great job maintaining your membership. Although you have seen high membership
loss over the last several decades, everyone has. However, you … have seen the lowest percentage of loss in
North America over the last several decades.
Here are a few other facts, that are significant:
In North America you are our YOUNGEST District with an average age of 57.
You … are the second largest District in the entire Western Hemisphere, trailing only California-Nevada-Hawaii
(Cal-Nev-Ha).
And … you … are the North American District with the highest percentage of women in membership … at 45%.
Governor Mel – your friendship means the world to me. I will never forget the session I had with you and the
Trustees, which really set the tone and created a vision for your term as Governor. Your passion, your belief in
our mission, and your efforts are to be commended. You know I listen to Kelly Walker’s CD “All My Life” every
day. Which means I revisit your Convention last year – Every Day.
Eight districts are being recognized by the Kiwanis International Board for meeting the distinguished criteria during the
2018-2019 administrative year. These districts achieved a net gain in membership and reached the new club
opening goal set by their respective Governor. Of those eight districts I am pleased to recognize the Eastern
Canada & The Caribbean District as one of only two from North America.
Once again, I want to thank all of you for making my first year as a Trustee/Counselor a Memorable one.
Ronald E. Smith
Kiwanis International Trustee District Counselor 2018-2019

Message from 2019-2020 District Governor Robert Spellen
BUILDING LEADERS TO LEAD.
We all know that conventions leave a lasting impression on all. A good convention can enlighten us, it can lead us to question our values and behaviour, and also the character of the convention can be so impressive and educational that it encourages us to attend the next convention because that is what we enjoy so much, to meet our Kiwanis family, where we reunite and exchange each others views.
However, this year we have been deprived of this reunion due to Covid-19. This pandemic has made such an impact on the whole world where everyone had to go into quarantine. Surprisingly, the spirit of my fellow Kiwanians was so powerful that we all found ways to still dedicate time to our communities.
Therefore, all Kiwanians are worthy of being recognized for all that we do. All those who have dedicated the extra time during the Kiwanis year (2018 -2019), are most deserving of the recognition of Excellence, Award of Distinction or any other trophy. It is a privilege to receive these honours.
I congratulate you all for your dedication, time and effort each of you has spent building on the future of Kiwanis.
There are not sufficient words to express my sincere gratitude for all your work and dedication.
Yours in service
Bob Governor 2019 - 2020

Message from Immediate Past Governor Melford Clarke
Three years ago, I stood amongst you in Ottawa thanking you on entrusting me to assume the role as your Governor of the Eastern Canada The Caribbean District. and here, I am now expressing my gratitude to all of you for making my tenure so special. It has been a pleasure to have served during the 2018-2019 administration. My Kiwanis journey as Governor and my task and goals are achieved but my service to this awesome organization continues. To the members who started this journey with me, I say thank you for staying the course and to our new members who joined us on the way, thanks for becoming a part of us, best wishes for your future activities in Kiwanis. To the 2018-2019 officers, I am appreciative of your dedication and performance. My Lieutenant Governors and I set out with ambitious goals which we knew would only be possible with your hard work. Your salient efforts and commitments echoed responses that makes us all proud: new members added, more impactful projects and service hours,
signature projects increased and in the end eleven (11) new clubs. You did your best given your unique circumstances. You did it your way. I wish all of you a successful and fruitful Kiwanis journey. Many thanks to all Trustees, Lieutenant Governors, Committee Chairpersons, District Administrators, District Executives, District Secretary/Treasurer and advisors for playing your part. Your immense efforts, faithful work, belief in the District’s mission and continuous delivery contributed to achieve what we have always aspired for. Everyone made an effect in their own way to achieve what we are now celebrating. Just to highlight a few achievements: • We have added eleven (11) new Clubs to the Kiwanis family. As such, the District ended the year with a net
growth of 6 members and a grand total of 6,865 members. • The Board of Trustees has accomplished much. Two new divisions were formed, two divisions were
combined as one, and amendments to the Policies and Procedures were numerous. • The Lieutenant Governors have encouraged clubs to complete monthly reports and assisted in making the
goals of the District a reality. • Impactful community projects: Clubs build security booths to protect our young children, while others either
refurbished or created playgrounds in schools or communities. We witnessed clubs involving the differently abled in their projects, food banks or visitation. Further, a national day of service for persons living with disabilities was proclaimed in a Division. Another Division focused on blind persons and yet another concentrated-on persons with HIV.
• Increased sponsored youth: Our Service Leadership Program has grown. Today there are more Circle K clubs, Key clubs, Builders clubs, K-Kids clubs and Aktion clubs for the children and the differently able to join.
Again, without you, it would have been impossible to achieve all what we have mentioned above. And now, as I depart my leadership but not my service I will forever support those leaders who follow me with whole hearted trust that they will continue the path, and I will be a support and faithful helper. Among our great successes, there were some tragedies and disappointments. To say the least we had our share. Kiwanis International President Poly lost his battle with cancer approximately two weeks short of completing his administrative year. Two of our Lieutenant Governors had limited duties due to illness, a few of our senior Kiwanians from the Golden K Club died and more than four Kiwanis Clubs closed their doors by 30th September 2019. Hurricane Dorian left devastation in its wake on the Bahamian islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama, temporarily displacing three of our Kiwanis Club members. Here, I want to wish all those who have experience some discomfort; peace, those who departed; eternal rest, for us who grieve; comfort and to those who came to our aid; thanks. Finally, we extend congratulations and Best Wishes to Kiwanians, Clubs and Divisions which are listed below as they receive their awards in the various categories. Thank you for all you have done to Inspire Kiwanians to Commit, Serve and Grow our clubs, divisions and district thereby providing us with more persons and hands to help achieve our goals. I echo my gratitude to all of you, assuring that I will remain faithful with dedication, love and selflessness. Melford Clarke,

Message from L. Sandra Butler, District Achievement & Awards Committee
I wish to thank 2018-2019 District Governor, Melford Clarke, for giving me the opportunity to chair the District

Congratulations to the winners on your achievements. Your achievements credit your hard work and dedication that
you have put into Kiwanis and the Community. To the other nominees that didn’t make the finals we wish to thank
you for your participation.

collectively as we make a difference in our communities.
Thanks to 2018-2019 Achievement and Awards Committee, District Trustee--Marjorie Buck and Distinguished

Profile of Distinguished Lieutenant Governor of Excellence
Division 24 Donna Coombs 2018-2019 Lieutenant Governor
I blinked my eyes and in an instant the 2018-2019 Kiwanis Administrative year passed. What a year and I had the pleasure to lead the most dedicated, diverse and committed Kiwanians and by extension the finest division. The meaningful projects have left an indelible mark on the communities where there were executed. I am grateful to the members of Division 24 for rendering altruistic services to our fellow human beings. Our Kiwanis year began with the CLE training of our leaders, followed by a retreat with the executive committee members of the Division at Bahia Principe Hotel. During the administrative year 2018-19, the division’s major project was under the theme” Securing the Safety of Our Children”, which led to the construction of four security booths. The beneficiaries were: Breadnut Hill Primary, Brown’s Town Infant, Trinity Primary and Ramble Primary Schools. The rationale for undertaking this project was to ensure the School Warders had a place to stay, to ensure greater oversight of
the schools’ population, who are primarily pedestrians. From this project approximately 2,000 students will be benefiting annually. The clubs within this division completed over 600 service projects, with over 1000 service hours spanning all committees namely, Young Children Priority One, Service Leadership Programme, Spiritual Aims and Community Services. Another of the Division’s signature project “New Year‘s Day Baby Basket “was a tremendous success. On January 01, 2019, Kiwanians traversed the three parishes and presented gift baskets totaling 56 to mothers of babies born on that date. The division, as well as individual clubs had over thirty coverages for projects done which were featured in visual and print media. Division 24 in Jamaica had the lowest number of clubs totaling 11 and membership of 224. By the end of the administrative year, the division had 15 clubs and 319 members. The unprecedented increase of 43% in membership within our Division paved the way to successfully complete projects, maintain relevance and continuity in the true spirit of Kiwanis. We also increased our membership in Service Leadership Programme and five SLPs were chartered namely: Circle K ~ Brown’s Town Community College & Moneague College, Key Club ~ York Castle High School and K-Kids- Iona Prep & Breadnut Hill Primary. By midyear our Division had formed one new club. When the call was made that the District needed more new clubs to meet the targeted 12 new club promised to Kiwanis International President Poly, Division 24 jump on the bus and formed not only one additional club but three more clubs. Division 24 was the designated host for our Eastern Canada & The Caribbean District Governor Melford Clarke’s visit to Jamaica. His visit was ably facilitated through the kind assistance of our valued stakeholders at Montego Bay Airport, Jewel Group and Laughing Waters. During Past Governor Melford’s visitation he visited clubs’ projects and interacted with members in all three parishes – Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann. Our division believes in collaboration and so all other LGs from the Divisions in Jamaica participated in some of our events namely Welcome Cocktail Party which was attended by the Custos of St. Ann, as well as the Courtesy Call on the Governor General of Jamaica. The year was fulfilling, and we are committed to making our communities a better place as we work unwaveringly to change the world one child at time.

Division 23E Pam Rodney White 2018-2019 Lieutenant Governor
My fellow Lieutenant Governors did great work and commendations are extended to everyone, however I am most proud of the meaningful and excellent legacy I have left behind, one that will be written in the Kiwanis annals. Division 23E focused primarily on Persons Living with Disabilities (PWD), one that was never done before by the Division. The impact on both Kiwanians and the disability sector was huge. Awareness to and inclusiveness of this vulnerable and often unforgotten group were heightened. In the end the Governor General signed a Proclamation for a national day of service on September 12 each year for Person with Disabilities. I am extremely heartened at the long-lasting impact and the work that continues. In full support of the Proclamation, The Kiwanis Foundation of Jamaica (on behalf of all the
Divisions) has unanimously appointed me Chair for Disabilities Day 2020. This has led to a collaboration with STRiDE Jamaica to execute a two-day event which will focus on Dementia. In the months leading up to the event, it is intended that all Kiwanis clubs in Jamaica will be involved. The benefit to Kiwanis in terms of publicity will be great. Already STRiDE has included an article on the partnership in its newsletter which has readership both locally and internationally. It doesn’t stop here as each year Kiwanians will have an opportunity to bring awareness to a different type of disability. Of note too is the fact that the clubs executed over 60 projects together with talks at meetings aimed at the disability focus. The Division also established a Food Bank specifically for Persons living with Disabilities. The Bank is still functional.
We are now seeing elevated support for Aktion Clubs. A new one was formed during the 2018-19 year and another is now in formation. The last one formed in the Division was approximately twenty (20) years ago.
Division 23 East started the year with twenty-two (22) Kiwanis clubs and ended with twenty-five having formed three (3) new Kiwanis clubs namely Young Professionals St Andrew, Old Hope Road, and Worthington. It is commendable that all of the clubs in Division 23E except one had net growth at the end of the year. With an initial start of 1095 members, we ended the year with a net divisional membership of 1191 member. Other highlights were that 42,932 service hours and 1046 projects reported. 74,408 youths benefitted a number of these were from the KC Eastern St Andrew's mission to Ghana. The KC New Kingston received the Governor's ribbon for the fourth quarter. Seven (7) SLP clubs were formed or re-chartered. These included 1 Aktion; 2 K Kids; 1 Builders; 2 Key and 1 Circle K club and Four DCMs were held and 3 major divisional fellowships. Support was given to the other Divisions by attendance at meetings and projects.
The marketing and PR activities were very outstanding and hence kept Kiwanis in the news for the entire year:20 newspaper articles; 4 newspaper photo releases; 4 television interviews; 3 newspaper supplements; 1 newspaper profile of the LG; 1 television report in the nightly news; 8 articles in the ECC newsletter; 1 article in the KI newsletter; The Food Bank specifically had a media launch and Social media inclusions are too numerous to mention. Of note is that these media activities were at the Divisional level and do not reflect what the clubs did on their own.

2018-2019 Kiwanis International Distinguished District Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2020 5:29 PM To: Melford Clarke Cc: James Steele, Daniel Vigneron, James Rochford 2018-2019 Distinguished District - Eastern Canada and The Caribbean Congratulations! Mel: When 2018-19 Kiwanis International President Florencio “Poly” Lat started laying the groundwork for his presidency, he firmly believed in recognizing hard work and achievements. Poly wanted a name for his special recognition, thus creating the Kiwanis International Distinguished Service – KIDS Awards. As you may recall the achievement qualifications for 2018-19 Distinguished District Recognition included both of the following: •Achieve the goal for new Kiwanis club openings established by you and Poly during the Governors-Elect Training Conference in November 2017. • Finish the 2018-19 year with a net increase in membership. Poly insisted on continuity to ensure a firm foundation for Kiwanis and its leaders, to Provide seamless support to the children and communities we serve. Poly loved to celebrate, and because of your dedication, the Eastern Canada and The Caribbean District has been recognized as distinguished for the 2018-19 year.
As a distinguished district you will receive the following award items: pins for both Distinguished District Governor and Distinguished District Secretary; and a certificate of commendation. You will also receive a very special gift designed by Poly himself at the start of his term. While the cancellation of the 2020 Kiwanis Convention requires us to alter the way in which we traditionally present these awards, please know that we are working with leadership to develop a creative way to virtually recognize your district for its outstanding achievement. We will communicate these plans to you as details are finalized. It was important to Poly that he had a purpose in life. Let the KIDS awards be Poly’s legacy for leading others to provide opportunities for the children of the world.
