Principal’s Page 28/04/2017 ANZAC

In autumnal sunlight on Monday afternoon 24th April the school, in the lead up to Anzac day, had a short ceremony where we planted a new Lone Pine at the back of the oval. Our Lone Pine at the front of the school was not looking that healthy so this wonderful location was chosen. It was great to have George Bennett, who was the RSL president in 2006 when our first lone pine was planted, helping out. Thanks to the primary students who helped prepare the site (digger’s all), Alexis Watson, our school SRC president and her classmates who explained ANZAC day’s significance and our younger students who helped plant the tree, also to Matilda Campbell and Beau Whitford who were wreath bearers,. I hope they will remember this day in future years as they grow up with the tree. Thanks to Megan for the wreath and Fran Mills who nurtured the pine over summer. Also Michael Connley and Gus McKinnon for the new rock where a new plaque will be placed.

The weather for ANZAC day was not nearly so kind, however it was great to see our students attend and participate in Cann River’s official ceremony. There were seventeen students at the eleven o’clock service and pictured is three of those at the dawn service.

ANZAC means many different things to different people and the school looked at ANZAC day in a number of different ways. From exploring representations in war in secondary English, to the primary Buddies program where student created a wonderful thoughtful poster, a photo of which is our front cover. Also see the wonderful letter we received from Bill Weatherall, War Veteran, who recently celebrated his hundredth birthday.

We received a wonderful letter from Bill Weatherall when he turned one hundred. Bill visited us last year and talk to

students about his life experiences.

Dear Teacher and Pupils,

At last I have time to write to thank you for your lovely 100th birthday card and present of the

jars of jam. I’m pleased that the College still teaches these things as communities may have to

be more self-supporting in the future.

We had a wonderful reunion of family and friends, around 150, some of whom I hadn’t seen for

more than 40 years, and then a later visit of two army mates, one who lives at Kaniva an the

S.A. border. Enclosed copies of stories as they were printed in our local paper, not all correct.

After returning from Darwin the 8th Batt. Went to Queensland for jungle training before going to

Lae, PNG and then to Emirau, and island north of Kaving New Ireland. When Manpower recalled

a group from our Batt. we came home via Torokina Bougainville and spent 11 days there,

American marines still fighting the Japanese.

We didn’t know then, that our mates would be involved later, even after the official peace was

declared. Then they had to guard prisoners, until boats returned them to Japan and we waited

until boats were available to bring them home. My recall by Manpower was probably because of

the bad bushfires in December 1943 when we were in Queensland, a lot of farm work and

fencing to be done and also the need for more food production after the end of the war in

Europe

My time spent on Melbourne defences, was in the 33th Batt. at Dandenong before transfer to

the 8th Batt to go to Darwin in Feb 1942. I. along with two other Victorians and a Tasmanian

were discharged from the Army for farm work on the 11th of Nov. 1944. I hope you were able to

read some of the stories in Rex Ruwoldt’s ‘Battle for Northern Australia’. While we were on

coastal watch and defending the air strips, it was really the airmen and merchant seamen that

made this possible. We hope to be able to

visit the Orbost area again, but I now have

some eye and medical problem just now.

Thank you again for your kind thoughts for

my Birthday and our 75th Wedding

Anniversary.

From Gran and Grandad Weatherall.

In relationship to Anzac Day year 8/9 students responded to texts about war, one of these was the painting Totes Meer (Dead Sea)

By the light of the moon our shadows get longer.

We fell, one by one, next to the dead signpost,

On a wreck by the sand,

We are not far from home.

Our names will be remembered

for our spirit will keep going on this day.

The Dead Sea is where we lay flowing with the wind.

By the sound of the gun shot you hear us say

‘We are still here in this place but now you are free.

You might have lost us but we are happy and free from war, we gave it our all to see you happy and free.’

Our soldier’s will be putting their heads down

for now we are legion

and we are happy

even if we are laying

in the Dead Sea.

We can still see you smiling

and paying your respect

because you know

we did it for you and your country. By Sarskia Sutherland.

The Sea of the Dead

By the sea of the dead

The moon is shining

Well planes drift away.

I see broken wings and bodies of

Something that sawed the skies.

As the planes were falling I saw

Them crash to their death.

Splash went the waves

As they almost touched the sky.

I thought of the soldiers

That fought for our lives.

This was the end of many soldiers

But start of a great victory.

by Taylah

The Lone Pine.

In bright sunlight on an autumn afternoon. We planted a lone pine It made me think about the war. And all the people who died in war Not just that it had some meaning behind it But because my Mum’s Dad died in the war So it made me feel a bit sad. But we do this to remember The warriors in the war. So we planted a new tree At the back of the oval and let it grow, People around watching us reading out What Anzac is all about And what it means to different people. This is so different to ‘Totes Meer’ - It was peaceful today- But in the Totes Meer it look like death War can be seen as death, pain, tragedy, hero-ics. Our final author wished to be anonymous

We need your help!! After the departure of Dr Reid, the only Dr willing to come to Cann River is Dr Mohit. He needs to have an idea of patient numbers before he comes, so it is really important that people make appointments before the Friday preceding his visit. (Appointments will be taken

after the Friday but preferable prior to then.)

We need to ensure this service continues, and we require community cooperation in building the appointments list well in advance.

Please help support this valuable service or we will lose it.
