Feature Story

Soon after the University of Georgia selected WhitfieldCounty as an Archway Partnership community in 2009,local leaders met with University of Georgia faculty mem-bers to discuss expectations for the partnership. With thegoal of helping Whitfield County achieve high-prioritygoals through the application of higher educationresources, the Archway Partnership posed the followingquestion to the Archway Executive Committee: Whatdoes “victory” look like in this community?

The varied answers to that question included:• Dalton State College has a sports and music program.• Revival of Dalton’s entrepreneurial spirit• Cultural growth• Downtown business development • More community engagement• Enhanced social capital• Increased young, educated workforce• A Young Professional Association• Traffic!• Dashboard of critical data• Larger white collar workforce• Low unemployment• Our community is educated on our strengths and weaknesses• Validation of myths-perceptions about Dalton• High-tech located in Downtown• Seamless discussion between groups• Unification of priorities

Today, thanks to the tireless work and intentional actionsof hundreds of citizens, over 50 University System ofGeorgia students, and over 35 faculty members, our com-munity has accomplished many of the items on this list! For example:

• In June, the City of Dalton, Whitfield County, DaltonPublic Schools, Whitfield County Public Schools, theChamber of Commerce, and the Archway Partnershipjoined forces and – in a historic display of unity –announced that they were making a community commit-ment to investing in public education and getting every

student on grade level in the early grades. Thisannouncement reflected the hard work of hundreds of resi-dents who engaged in Archway Issue Work Group discus-sions centered on education.

• In 2011, the community achieved a major milestonewhen Georgia Northwestern Technical College opened itsdoors at the Northwest Georgia College and CareerAcademy.

• This summer, community leaders hosted the secondDesign, Engineering, and Manufacturing Camp to exposemiddle school students to highly skilled career options inlocal industries.

• A community strengths and weaknesses analysisrevealed that poor nutrition was impacting the schoolreadiness of our birth through age 5 population, andcommunity partners worked to secure the Expanded Foodand Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) in cooperationwith UGA Cooperative Extension, WIC, and the localhealth department, which should be operational this fall.

• In fall 2011, community leadership teamed up to hostauthor and economist Rebecca Ryan to speak to the com-munity about attracting and retaining young professionals. That event inspired area young professionals to revitalizea group started in 2010 called the Young Professionals ofNorthwest Georgia. In furtherance of the group’s mission

University of Georgia Archway Partnership and the Dalton-Whitfield Community Work Together for Progress

Community leaders unite for literacy.

of attracting, connecting, retaining, engaging, and devel-oping Greater Dalton’s future leaders, it currently hostsmonthly socials, luncheons, and breakfasts.

• With an eye towards creating more jobs and raisingthe standard of living for all residents, the Dalton-WhitfieldJoint Development Authority has worked to promote entre-preneurship by partnering with the University of GeorgiaArchway Partnership to fund a business incubator studyfacilitated by Georgia Tech; creating an online resourcefor small businesses; developing a new brand focused oninnovation; maintaining an online dashboard of communi-ty data; and starting an angel investor network.

• In June, Dalton State College hired the second memberto its athletics office. New Senior Associate AthleticsDirector Richard Skeel joins Athletic Director DerekWaugh to launch men’s basketball, men’s and women’scross country, women’s volleyball, and men’s andwomen’s tennis in the 2013-14 school year.

• In 2010, Dalton State College hired Dr. Ellie Jenkins, its first full time music faculty member, and now regularlyhosts an expansive schedule of free concerts featuringprofessional and amateur musicians representing diversegenres.

• Over the past year, over 50 community members inter-ested in enhancing local arts and culture opportunitieshave been meeting through an Archway issue work groupto discuss how they can accomplish mutual goals. Thanksto their leadership and direction, students at the Universityof Georgia recently conducted a study on successful arts

and culture councils and, based on their recommenda-tions, community leadership is currently considering howto bolster existing cultural opportunities by using them asan economic development tool.

• For those who desired an increase in traffic, you needlook no further than downtown Dalton at lunch time onany given weekday. In June, thanks to the City ofDalton’s careful planning, the Chamber of Commerce andthe Carpet and Rug Institute relocated to downtownDalton.

• Through the Archway Partnership, Dalton State Collegeand University of Georgia students teamed up with theDowntown Development Authority to conduct surveys anddevelop a marketing plan that has led to increased inter-est in downtown by business owners looking for space.Recently, walking trails of downtown have been createdwith a brochure to promote them, and – through carefulmarketing - Dalton State College students have discovereddowntown Dalton.

The above examples represent just a smattering of whatthis community has accomplished since the ArchwayListening Session where over 350 citizens came togetherto share their vision for Dalton-Whitfield. This month takea moment and celebrate the fruits of your civic engage-ment! Successes like those described above reflect unityand alignment that distinguishes successful, forward-think-ing communities. There is no doubt that there is still workleft to be done, but this community has already estab-lished that it is up for the task.

Young Professionals recently had an outing at the Dalton Golf &Country Club.

Economic Development

Dalton’s Future EngineersFor the second consecutive year, local students took time off from summer vaca-tion to attend a week-long Design, Engineering and Manufacturing Camp held atthe Northwest Georgia College and Career Academy. Approximately 40 middleschool students graduated on Thursday, June 14, in the camp graduation ceremo-ny. The students had the opportunity to learn about the diversity of career choicesavailable in the local manufacturing industries.

“Even though it’s summer, the students were eager to learn about the differentcareer fields found right here in Dalton,” said Barbara Ward, workforce develop-ment director for the Dalton-Whitfield County Joint Development Authority. “Theyreally enjoyed the hands-on learning this week.”

Students spent the week learning about various activities, including 3-D modelingand fabrication, carpet design and manufacturing, electronics and robotics. Eachof the students was responsible for creating a rug design, designing a race carand building a circuit board. The campers were also able to tour local advancedmanufacturing plants. The students were amazed at the amount of automationand the size of the machines being used.

“For many of the students, it was their first opportunity to visit the Shaw Research& Development Center and local manufacturing plants,” said Brian Cooksey, operations training & development at Shaw Industries.

The idea for the camp grew out of the work of the Archway Partnership, aUniversity of Georgia programdesigned to help the communityimprove opportunities for educa-tion, quality of life and the econ-omy. Plans are underway for nextyear’s Design, Engineering andManufacturing Camp and camporganizers expect to have evenmore students.

The camp was sponsored byShaw Industries, MohawkIndustries, J&J Industries, DaltonUtilities, Georgia NorthwesternTechnical College,Whitfield CountySchools, DaltonPublic Schools,Greater DaltonChamber ofCommerce, Dalton-Whitfield CountyJoint DevelopmentAuthority and theBoys & GirlsClubs of Gordon,Murray, & WhitfieldCounties.

The Mission of the Dalton - Whitfield County JointDevelopment Authority is to

facilitate the long-term, positiveeconomic growth of the communi-ty by attracting/retaining jobs, diverse investments and growing

Diplomat of the Month

Chamber Link www.daltonchamber.org July 201214

It is such an honor to be selected Diplomat of the month for theGreater Dalton Chamber of Commerce. Even though I wasmost recently a Diplomat with my past employer I am excitedto maintain my contacts with the Chamber as I venture intoopening my own business. It is going to be a slow process butI know the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce is an excel-lent resource for new businesses getting started. I have beenfortunate to attend many ribbon cutting ceremonies of newbusinesses in our area and see the Chamber’s involvementfirsthand. Assistance as you open is one of many events andservices the Chamber provides local businesses. The network-ing that is available through the Chamber is amazing.

I have lived in Dalton most of my life and am married to myhigh school sweetheart Magan Outlaw. We have 3 sons,Morrison who is almost 12 and twin boys Michael and Paulthat are 1 ½. I look forward to working more with the Chamber in thefuture.

While all of America´s Best Choice windows are ener-gy efficient, certain options and upgrades are availableto increase energy efficiency and significantly reduceutility costs. The addition of Low-E Glass and ArgonGas, combined with our Intercept Spacer System, canincrease the efficiency of windows by 35-40 percent. The more energy efficient the window, the lower yourutility bills in both summer AND winter. In addition, thestrain on your HVAC system is reduced, which length-ens the life of your equipment. Harmful UV rays arealso reduced when using the Low-E glass coating, there-by protecting drapes, carpets, artwork, hardwoods, fur-niture, etc. from harmful UV rays. There are severalways the efficiency is measured in windows but hereare two of the main ones.

1. Solar Heat GainSolar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how wella product blocks heat from the sun. The lower theSHGC, the better a product is at blocking unwantedheat gain. Blocking solar heat gain is particularlyimportant during the summer cooling season.

Basically The Low E2 coating in the window reflectsaway the UV rays that heat up your home before theyenter the house. This results in a lower room tempera-ture and a dramatic reduction in harmful effects of sundamage such as fading of fabrics and flooring. It alsomeans the HVAC units will have to work less to main-

tain a comfortable temperature in the home. This willnot only save money on utility bills but will extend thelife of the HVAC unit itself due to it not having to workas hard.

2. U-FactorU-Factor measures how well a product prevents heatfrom escaping a home or building. The lower the U-Factor, the better a product is at keeping heat in. U-Factor is particularly important during the winter heat-ing season.

In the winter time the cold outside can transfer insidethrough the temperature changes in the glass panes. The Argon Gas inside Americas Best Choice Windowsis a very efficient insulation. In a regular window with-out Argon (or a window where the Argon gas hasleaked out) If it is 0 degrees outside then the outsidepane of glass measures 17 degrees and the insidepane of glass that you sit next to while reading orwatching TV measures in at a chilly 35 degrees. That'swhere the cold air you feel comes from. The Argon gaswill make that inside pane of glass remain a steady 65degrees. This will be a lot closer to the settings insidethe home, meaning your rooms will stay warmer due tono transference of cold air. This will also stop the“sweating” some people experience on the inside oftheir windows.

Americas Best Choice LowE2 windows are Energy StarCertified and do qualify for Tax Credits and Rebate pro-grams through several utility companies. Choosingenergy efficient windows from Americas Best Choice isa smart choice that not only reduces utility costs, but isgood for the planet too!
