The program, boasting an alumni base of more than 725 from Emerge Owensboro and Leadership Owensboro, is the premier local professional development and community learning opportunity.

“The class is more than I ever expected,” said Kelsey Mann, a financial adviser at Old National Bank and 2014 Emerge Owensboro alumnus. “The exposure to so many different parts of our community have already helped me in my career and motivated me to be a bigger part of the community’s direction, too.”

Classes consist of nine full-day sessions and will include topics such as education, human

needs and services, local government issues, crime, arts, tourism, healthcare and more. Never underestimate the power of a small group of passionate people with a vision. It was July 2, 1978, when the Rev. Glendon Coppick first mentioned to the congregation at Trinity Episcopal Church the idea of developing a hospice program in Owensboro to serve terminally ill patients and their families.

Alice Bagot, Ann Greer and Bea Lennox enthusiastically joined him in that quest and, 36 years later, Hospice of Western Kentucky is the result of their efforts.

Now serving Daviess, Hancock, Hopkins and Muhlenberg counties, Hospice of Western Kentucky is a nonprofit, community-based organi-zation caring for patients of all ages facing a life-limiting illness.

Hospice’s philosophy of care is centered on the belief that each of us has the right to die pain-free, with dignity, surrounded by our loved ones. In 2013, Hospice of Western Kentucky served 618 pa-tients and their families.

In October of last year, Owens-boro became home to the first free-

standing hospice inpatient facility in western Kentucky when Hospice opened “The Heartford House” at 2914 Old Hartford Road. Short-term admissions to the facility may occur if a patient requires more specialized care than can be given at home, or if the patient’s caregiver is in need of respite services. The warm, home-like settings of The Heartford House were designed with the entire family in mind.

Hospice of Western Kentucky’s main administrative and clinical of-fice is at 3419 Wathens Crossing in Owensboro. For more information on hospice services or The Heart-ford House, call (270) 926-7565 or visit our website at www.hospiceof-wky.org.

Maker’s Mark Chairman Emeritus Bill Samuels, Jr. has been called a mav-erick, a giant in the distillery business, a marketing genius, a visionary and the best friend the Kentucky bourbon indus-try has ever had. But he prefers another label: Eyewitness.

Bill has personally seen it all: the creation of the premium bourbon cat-egory and the resurrection of the entire industry. That first-hand perspective has given Bill what many recognize as the most comprehensive view of the busi-ness today. And the best stories:

• Bill’s next-door-neighbor as a child, and his godfather, was bourbon legend Jim Beam.

• He listened to his father lose the argument with his mother about sealing their new bourbon with dripping red wax, resulting in one of the most recognizable trademarks in the spirits world.

• He learned much of the distillery business not from his dad, but from Jack Daniel’s great-nephew Hap Motlow.

As a teenager, Bill learned about salesmanship by driving Harland Sand-ers around as the Colonel was launch-ing his new chicken business. Later, Bill earned a degree in engineering physics, helping design both the Gemini

and Polaris missiles. He then went to law school

and the White House (as an intern) before joining his father in the family business. Bill was put in charge of marketing and began writing the brand’s dis-tinctive, quirky ads himself.

Bill also witnessed the merger of bourbon and tourism. His mother insisted that a dollar’s worth of improve-ment go into the Maker’s Mark distillery grounds for every dollar his father put into operations, eventually creating one of the most popular visitor experiences in Kentucky.

As Bill, who assumed leadership of Maker’s Mark in the mid-1970s, was considering the transition to Chairman Emeritus, he introduced a new expres-sion of his whisky called Maker’s 46 -- another remarkable achievement in distilling craft: a bolder, spicier flavor with an elongated finish yet without any bitterness.

Anything of any significance that happened in the past two or three generations of distilling, Bill not only lived through it, but chances are, he was actually there. Bill Samuels, Jr. – the industry’s incomparable Eyewitness Emeritus.
