The duo earlier went to an even $1

million for a Baramul Stud-bred colt by the same pensioned Arrowfield

Stud sire, a day after landing a $1.1 million son of Not A Single Doubt from

    Torryburn Stud.

So far, Fung and Phoenix have bought six out of the seven colts offered

by Not A Single Doubt at this sale for a total of $5.19 million.

The attraction to Not A Single Doubt is more than understandable

given their success with Group 2-winning sprinter Dubious and, more

recently, Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Farnan, as well as another

    powerful colt in Anders.

On their highest-priced acquisition to date, Aquis Farm managing

director Shane McGrath said: “They are a limited edition, the Not A Single

Doubt colts, and he (the $1.8 million colt) comes off a great nursery and is

out of a very good racemare.”

After McGrath successfully bid on Baramul Stud’s Lot 529 from a

corner table at the auditorium, bidding for the $1.8 million colt, who was

catalogued as Lot 612, was left to Abdulaziz Salman, who was calling the

    shots online from Dubai.

“Unfortunately, he (Abdulaziz Salman) can't be here at the sale.

Everyone in the industry likes to be part of the atmosphere and likes being

part of the process,” McGrath said.

“We’ve been fortunate that he's allowed the team to collect the list of horses.

We just thought on a horse like this, it was nice for him to do the bidding.

“Each horse we have discussed, we have talked through what we

    wanted to spend on them.”

Emirates Park general manager Bryan Carlson put the colt on the

market from the opening $600,000 bid, noting the pre-sale interest had

him confident of a big result.

“He was a lovely colt. Even back at the farm, he's been very popular, I

didn't think he was going to make that much, but I knew he was going to

make over a million,” Carlson said.

  • “He's been very popular and has been

out of his box the whole time. It’s a fantastic result. He's always been a

relaxed, well-moving colt. He does tick every box.”

One More Honey has a Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt at foot and is

in foal to Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).

The $1 million lot from Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud also fitted “all the

    cliches”, according to McGrath.

“He’s a lovely, fast, sharp two-year-old and we hope he is back here

    next year,” he said.

“He fits our profile of what we are trying to do. We've got great partners

in Phoenix who are willing to back our judgment. The proof will be in the

    pudding on the racetrack.”

Regarding Not A Single Doubt, who was pensioned in January 2020

and has 44 live foals in his second-last crop being offered to the market,

McGrath added: “He leaves a great type, he's a phenomenal sire. There are

only a handful of colts there, and we are keen to secure them.

“The market has shown there is a huge appetite for the stallion, and

    he's a huge loss.”

The colt is the second foal out of the winning Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado)

mare Medaglia Valore, while his second dam is the Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m) and Group 2 winner Military Rose (General Nediym).

Built in the mould of his sire, a powerful sprinting type, McGrath says

there is no reason to stray from a proven formula.

“We have had a lot of success in recent times from purchases out of

the Magic Millions sale ring and it’s nice to give a bit of money back to

Gerry (Harvey, owner of Magic Millions and Baramul Stud). God knows

    he needs it,” he joked.

Later, the partners also went to $750,000 for a last-crop son of Redoute’s

Choice (Danehill) from the stakes-placed winner Mount Zero (Northern

Meteor), making him a three-quarter brother to this season’s talented juvenile

Mura Mura (Not A Single Doubt). He was catalogued as Lot 576.

The Stonestreet Stables-owned, and Peter and Paul Snowden-trained,

    Mura Mura runs in tomorrow’s

    Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

    Magic Millions managing

    director Barry Bowditch, who

    like most industry participants

    was beaming over the continued

    strength experienced at the Gold

    Coast this week, recognised

    Fung and Phoenix’s continued

    investment in the Australian

    industry.

“They have had a huge fill-up out of this sale. When you think about

it, they bought Dubious, three years ago and two years ago they’ve taken

home Farnan, Anders and Prague, so It works, doesn’t it?” Bowditch said.

“They have bought some huge horses out of this sale which have been

great on the racetrack, but they have also sold them well to stud. The

    recipe obviously works.”

At the current rate of trade, Magic Millions is on track to break the $200

million barrier and another record sale, a possibility almost unthinkable

    only months ago.

There have been eight million-dollar lots across the three sessions so

far at an average of $257,471, up more than $5,000 compared to the same

    stage last year.

The $180,000 median is holding steady, but the most stunning feature

of the sale so far is the clearance rate of 88 per cent, a statistic that was

    forecast to drop year-on-year.

“The market’s truly set now. It’s buoyant, it’s confident and it’s real.

The vendors are putting them on the market and buyers are having a

proper go at all levels,” Bowditch said.

“When you’re selling a horse well at $80,000; selling a horse well at

$500,000, through to the big numbers, it just gives buyers confidence to

buy at all levels and that’s what Magic Millions is all about.”

Bowditch continued: “This is the best catalogue ever produced by us.

The horses are solid all the way through - there’s not a weak day, there’s

    not a strong day.

“Will we have another million-dollar horse? I suspect so and I am

confident that we will, but could I tell you which one right now? I’m not

    100 per cent sure.

“I am just thrilled that under the circumstances of getting this sale

through all the restrictions and all the trepidation that the buyers have

shown up here in droves and supported this industry like it deserves to

    be supported.”

  • Loving Gaby’s sister joins Maher-Eustace stable

It took some intense and rapid negotiations but eventually the

sister to dual Group 1-winning mare Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)

was sold to her trainer Ciaron Maher and Nxt Level Syndication for

    $1.2 million.

As the filly’s price stalled at $1.2 million, auctioneer Clint Donovan

attempted to entice another bid from the buying bench but no one

stepped forward, leaving her to be passed in and setting in motion the

quick-fire response from vendor Kia Ora Stud and Maher.

Soon after, it was announced that the filly would join the stable of

Maher and his co-trainer David Eustace.

“It wasn’t straightforward - it was a bit awkward at the end there, but

we’re rapt to be able to get her. She’s very much like her (Loving Gaby) and

maybe a little bit stronger,” Maher said.

“I didn’t have much more left in me, maybe another five ($50,000).

Hopefully she can be as good as her sister.”

Coolmore, who paid $2.25 million for Maastricht (Mastercraftsman)

carrying the million-dollar youngster at the 2019 Inglis Chairman’s Sale,

will remain in the ownership of the filly.

She is the third foal out of the Group 2-placed Maastricht, herself

a half-sister to stakes winners Velocitea (Volksraad) and Weaponry

(Declaration Of War), and was catalogued as Lot 500.

Maher would not rule out the filly being able to reach the racetrack

sooner than her big frame suggests.

“Gaby was very big and raw

and this horse has maybe got a

little bit more quality, a little bit

    more strength, and the same

sort of physical. She is quite tall,”

    he said.

    “Gaby came to hand pretty

early for a big filly and this

horse is well structured. If they

have plenty of ability they can

    normally get there earlier than

    what you think.”

Kia Ora Stud’s Shane Wright acknowledged that the selling of the

blue-chip filly did not go as smoothly as expected.

“It's hard to speculate what these big horses are going to make. We

thought that was a fair price. We were just testing the market,” Wright said.

“The sale has been so hot this week. It’s been amazing and

congratulations to Magics for putting on such a show.

“Ciaron is the hottest trainer of two-year-olds in the country. She

looks like a genuine two-year-old type.

“By this time next year, hopefully he will have built her own reputation

and hopefully she won't be living off Loving Gaby's reputation any more. I

reckon that will be the case.”

Maastricht had an early November-born Justify (Scat Daddy) colt last

    year.

Victorian Alliance strikes againThe numerous colts syndicates attempting to land the next jackpot

stallion prospect again dominated the marketplace and that was the case

with the Rosemont Stud-backed Victorian Alliance.

On Wednesday, the group made its mark with a $1 million Zoustar colt

and it did not stop yesterday, buying a son of I Am Invincible (Invincible

    Spirit) for $950,000 from Coolmore.

  • The Alliance also signed for another

colt by I Am Invincible for $400,000 from Yarraman Park Stud, as well as

an Edinburgh Park-consigned son of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) for $300,000

    on day three.

With the assistance of its retained agents Suman Hedge and the

UK-based David Redvers, the partnership involving some high-profile

Victorian breeders bought the first foal out of the stakes-placed mare

Petition (Foxwedge), herself a daughter of New Zealand Group 1 winner

    The Party Stand (Thorn Park).

The colt went through in the closing minutes of the session as Lot 636.

“He was a horse we identified very early at the top of our list of colts to

try and secure for our Victorian Alliance,” Hedge said.

    “He’s by a champion stallion, out of a stakes-placed mare, a daughter

of a Group 1 winner and he’s a lovely physical.

“He looks like an early-running horse and that’s the profile that us and

a lot of the other colt buyers here are looking for.”

The extreme demand is being fuelled by competition for colts who

could be sold for over $40 million as stallion prospects should they achieve

the desired level of racetrack performance.

“It is a very crowded market for colts. I think there’s six or seven

different syndicates trying to secure them and they’re all looking for

    similar qualities in those

    horses,” Hedge said.

    “Everybody’s landing on

    them and everyone’s got money.

It’s the start of the year and it's a

pretty buoyant sale here, so you

have to be very aggressive on

the ones that you want and put

yourself out there if you want to

    get them.

    “Fortunately, we have been

able to pick up a couple of

    other horses which were under

    our projected budget and that

probably smoothed over a couple of our other aggressive purchases out of

the total that we’ve been able to get.”

The prominent James Harron Bloodstock colts syndicate also

continued its haul for 2021 yesterday by buying a Zoustar colt for $800,000.

Offered by Widden Stud as Lot 483, he is out of the unraced Lone

(Sepoy), a half-sister to stakes winners Atmospherical (Northern Meteor),

Gai’s Choice (General Nediym) and Peron (Husson).

Harron also outlaid $800,000 for the Snitzel three-quarter sister to

sprinting colt Anders and a sister to the stakes-placed Battleground. She

was sold by Arrowfield Stud as Lot 503.

Almanzor colt with Russian Camelot similarities makes $800,000

    Meanwhile, a Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) owner-trainer combination

will reunite after a colt by Cambridge Stud’s European champion shuttler

Almanzor (Wootton Bassett), the surprise-packet of the first season sires,

    sold for $800,000.

Danny O’Brien, who compared the colt on type to that of Russian

Camelot (Camelot) as a yearling and prepared Cox Plate winner Shamus

Award (Snitzel) for Sean Buckley, will train the horse after Baystone Farm’s

Dean Harvey identified and signed for him.

Harvey confirmed that Ultra Thoroughbreds’ Buckley would have

O’Brien take care of the horse during his racing career.

“He was faultless on type; Alamanzor was a champion racehorse of

Europe and the types I have seen by him this week have been fantastic,”

    Harvey said.

“I think they are going to be versatile horses and he was one of the

colts of the sale. We had to chase hard to buy him but eventually we won

    out.

“There was plenty of competition on him and that’s what happens

with nice horses - they sell like that.”

Bred by Murray and Marg Hardy along with Mills Reef Winery founder

Paddy Preston under their Sunlight Trust banner, the colt is the third foal out

of the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) runner-up Lazumba (Sebring).

She has a Written Tycoon colt at foot and is back in foal to the same sire. The

yearling was catalogued as Lot 470.

Inglis Classic to proceed as live auction

Next month’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale will

proceed as a live auction at Riverside Stables

from February 7-9. The sale will be conducted

with Inglis’ CovidSafe plan in place, which

allows for a range of hospitality options, while

the auction house will continue to work with

    respective state government authorities to

further develop protocols that will allow for

the attendance of interstate participants. “The

permit system now in place for travel to Victoria

is a very positive development for those looking

to participate in the sale,” Inglis managing

director Mark Webster said. “We are working

with all the relevant authorities to ensure that

as many people as practicable can attend the

sale in a safe and responsible manner, and we

will continue to liaise with buyers through the

coming weeks. It is an excellent catalogue of

horses for what year after year proves itself to

be the best-value yearling sale on the calendar,

and we are excited to get the 2021 Inglis Yearling

Sales Series up and going with Classic on

February 7-9.” The 2021 Classic Yearling Sale,

for which 803 yearlings have been catalogued,

includes the progeny of 108 different stallions

offered by 76 individual vendors. Prospective

purchasers are encouraged to consider on-

farm inspections of catalogued yearlings where

practicable. On-site inspections are set to begin

at Riverside on February 2. Click here for the

contact details of vendors at the sale.

First for MauriceFirst season sire Maurice (Screen Hero) took

a long time to register a maiden winner in his

native Japan, only hitting the scoreboard in

mid-July before embarking on a remarkable

run to almost claim first season sire honours

in 2020. All indications suggest the Arrowfield

Stud shuttler may be about to begin a similar

run in Australia, with Balmaurice (2 g ex Bal

Du Siecle by Danehill Dancer) giving the six-

time Group 1 victor a first Australian winner

yesterday. Balmaurice was a significant drifter,

easing from $18 to $31, but the Rex Lipp-

trained gelding was much too good for his rivals

under Ben Thompson, racing clear for a two

and a quarter-length win over equal favourites

Reawaken (Kiss And Make Up) and Archdeacon

(Better Than Ready). Bred and raced by Trevor

and Diana Fraser, Balmaurice is the sixth foal

to race out of Bal Du Siecle (Danehill Dancer),

whose dam Buenos Aires (Rainbow Quest) is

a half-sister to Might And Power (Zabeel). Bal

Du Siecle has an American Pharoah (Pioneerof

The Nile) yearling colt and a So You Think

(High Chaparral) filly foal, while she is in foal to

Encryption (Lonhro). Maurice, who is the 16th

first season sire to have an Australian winner in

2020-21 and sits tenth on the early first season

sires standings by earnings, did not return to

Arrowfield Stud in 2020 due to Covid-19. He is

once again standing at Shadai Stallion Station

    in 2021.

Further clearance needed for Love, Availabull to be examined

Connections of Fake Love (I Am Invincible)

and Readily Availabull (Bull Point) face an

anxious wait with the pair having to overcome

    further veterinary examinations before being

given the all clear to take their chances in

tomorrow’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL,

1200m). The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-

trained Fake Love has received treatment

after experiencing slight lameness in the near

    foreleg. The John Sargent-trained Readily

Availabull was also showing similar signs of

lameness in the near foreleg after arriving at

the Gold Coast yesterday morning. The duo

will have to undergo another inspection this

morning before stewards make the call on

whether they can run in the Classic. Fake Love,

who won the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m)

at Caulfield first-up in October, is a $15 chance

with TAB fixed odds after drawing barrier 20,

while Readily Availabull, the Magic Millions

Clockwise Classic (1000m) winner at Ballarat,

    is a $23 outsider.

Edge to ‘lap up pressure’ in Classic

Trent Edmonds believes the traditional high

pressure scenario in tomorrow’s Classic will be

ideal for unbeaten colt Alpine Edge (Better Than

Ready). "The more high pressure event it becomes,

the better it will be for him," Edmonds, who trains

in partnership with his father Toby, said. "He'll

relish a good, strongly-run 1200 metres and should

lap up the pressure." Alpine Edge has impressed

Edmonds with his progress since winning the BJ

McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Eagle Farm on

Boxing Day. "He hasn't gone backwards since the

McLachlan win," Edmonds said. "We've left no

stone unturned. It's grand final day and he goes

there in really good shape." Edmonds believes

Alpine Edge's adaptable racing pattern is another

factor in his favour. "He's a versatile galloper. We

rode him forward in the Phelan Ready then rode

him off the speed in the McLachlan," he added. "I

really love the way he took that run up on the fence

the other day and he really attacked the line hard.

He'll come into barrier six on Saturday, which is a

    fantastic gate for him."

First-time visor for Hipstar Kelly Schweida is hoping a significant weight

swing and a gear change will enable Miss

Hipstar (Star Turn) to turn the tables on Swift

Witness (Star Witness) in the Classic. Miss

Hipstar was left trailing in the wake of Swift

Witness when she finished third, beaten nearly

four lengths by the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian

Bott-trained filly in the Gold Pearl (1100m) at

the Gold Coast last Saturday. On that occasion,

Miss Hipstar also had the burden of top-weight

of 58 kilograms, conceding four kilograms to

Swift Witness, but she meets that filly on level

weights this time round. Schweida has also

removed the winkers and added a visor to the

gear of Miss Hipstar. "She found the line pretty

good last weekend and meets the winner four

kilos better at the weights this time," Schweida

said. "I've taken the winkers off and put a visor

on just to try and eat into that margin she put

on us the other day." Schweida believes the

visor may help Miss Hipstar begin better in

the Classic after she was tardy at the start of

the Gold Pearl. "She was a bit slow out with the

winkers and I thought the visor would help her

to see the other horses when she breaks from

the gates," he said. "I felt a bit sick after the

barrier draw when she came up with 19, but she

deserves to take her place in the race."

Vella peaking for Snippets assignment Group 1 winner Bella Vella (Commands) will

line up in tomorrow’s Magic Millions Snippets

(1200m) with connections full of hope following

a sparkling workout this week. “Her gallop here

the other day was absolutely outstanding,” the

    Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner’s trainer

Will Clarken told Racing.com. “She swung onto

the right leg at the right time and she galloped

as good as I’ve ever seen her.” Bella Vella was

last seen in action when finishing last of the nine

runners in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

back in October, but Clarken said she has thrived

during her break. “She came to the end of it

(preparation in the Manikato) and it was a messy

race and a forgive run, but her two runs before

that were exceptional,” he said. “She’s travelled

up here really well. She’s carrying a little bit more

condition than she did last prep and she’s really

    thriving in the Queensland weather.”

No call yet on jockey for Hastings Connections of King Of Hastings (Ilovethiscity)

will leave it as late as possible before confirming

who will take the ride on the four-year-old in

the Snippets. The Anthony and Sam Freedman-

trained gelding only arrived in Queensland

yesterday, having won at Randwick on

Saturday. “He’s had a really good week so we

felt that he was fine to race on the back-up,”

Sam Freedman told Racing.com. “He’s drawn

a nice gate (nine) but we still need a jockey so

hopefully we can find a decent one. Because we

weren’t always going to be running, we didn’t

really plan this far ahead. You don’t hope that

other people are forced to scratch but if they do,

hopefully a decent rider becomes available.”

Jockeys without a ride in the race at present

include Brenton Avdulla, Andrew Mallyon and

Michael Dee, who was aboard King of Hastings

for his maiden win in May 2019.

Redouble out for historic Cup double Redouble (Redoute’s Choice) will attempt to

complete his own piece of Magic Millions history

when the gelding aims to become the first sprinter

to land the Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) for

the second time tomorrow. The Bjorn Baker-

trained seven-year-old won the race in 2019 and

finished second behind the Tony Gollan-trained

Vega One (Lope De Vega) last year. Redouble

was also nominated for the Snippets but Baker

felt the longer trip was more suitable. “Redouble

went close last year and is in good shape again,”

the trainer said. “He seems to thrive this time of

the year and he likes the track. He’s definitely not

out of it again. He had barrier one when he won

the Cup two years ago but he had the outside gate

when he was beaten last year. This time he’s got

eight and you have to respect what he’s done in

the past.” Baker will also be represented in the

race by Edison (Fastnet Rock), who will be ridden

by Ryan Maloney, while Michael Rodd partners

    Redouble.

Shaik second-up for Team Hawkes at Rosehill Tommy Berry is looking forward to getting back

on board Shaik (Sebring) when the three-year-

old has her second start for new connections in

a Benchmark 72 over 1300 metres at Rosehill

tomorrow. Berry partnered the filly for the first

time when she ran out an impressive winner at

Warwick Farm on her first start for Team Hawkes

on December 23. "She's a lovely filly, she

performed really well in some good company

last preparation obviously being placed behind

North Pacific," Berry said. "She's come into

the Hawkes stable from Brad Widdup's in very

good order and she was a really good winner

at her first run for the Hawkes'. She's definitely

improved since the last run, so it's the obvious

step for her to go back up to Saturday grade and

this looks a nice race for her."

Twinstar out to continue hot streak Emma and Lucy Longmire are hoping their

recent winning run continues at Rosehill

when the consistent Designer Dance (Master

Of Design) lines up in tomorrow’s Highway

Handicap (1500m). Since Christmas Eve the

twins, who race under the banner of Twinstar

Racing, have had three winners from nine

starters, with Designer Dancer being one of the

most promising horses in their 30-strong team.

The six-year-old has proven to be a consistent

performer with two wins and eight placings

from 16 starts. Robbie Dolan, who rode her last

time out when finishing a close-up second in a

Highway Handicap at Randwick on December

19, will be back in the saddle when she jumps

from barrier two. "It's great to have Robbie back

on board and we're very happy with that barrier

draw," Emma Longmire said. "He probably

can't really take full advantage of that barrier,

but it should mean he can get into a position

without doing too much work." It will be the

first time the mare steps up to 1500 metres,

but Longmire believes her racing pattern will

be suited by the extra distance. "She's such a

relaxed mare in the run and just switches off,"

the co-trainer continued. "It's her first time

over more than 1400 metres but she has a really

good turn of foot and we're confident she will

    run out the trip."

Alburq on black-type path at Flemington Mike Moroney hopes Alburq (Rubick) can

continue his rise towards stakes company

    when he contests tomorrow’s 1200-metre

Benchmark 84 down the Flemington straight.

Alburq currently has one win from 18 starts,

but Moroney is eyeing black-type handicaps

for the four-year-old moving forward, with a

tilt at the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m)

    on March 6 remaining a possibility. “He’s

    pretty underrated,” Moroney told Racing.com.

“He’s always given us the impression he’s got

black-type in him. Certainly we’ll be looking

for a lesser class than the Newmarket, but we’ll

throw a nomination in for a race like that. It’s

a handicap so those lightweight horses really

have a chance. I’m not saying that is what we’ll

aim at; we’d like to run in any black-type race

that’s a handicap.” Moroney offered Jamie Kah

the ride on Alburq tomorrow, but with Kah set

to partner the Anthony and Sam Freedman-

trained Deep Dive (Deep Field), Alburq will

be ridden by Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)-

winning apprentice Lachlan King, who can

    claim two kilograms.

Rawiller: scans reveal further injuries Brad Rawiller faces a longer period on the

sidelines than was first feared after further scans

revealed the jockey has also sustained fractures

to his back and ribs following a fall at Bunbury

on Wednesday. The 42-year-old was initially

reported to have suffered a broken collarbone

and punctured a lung after his mount,

    Imprudent (Oratorio), stumbled and dislodged

him in race two. However, the Victorian Jockeys

    Association released an update yesterday

    morning confirming the additional fractures.

The incident comes a little more than two years

after Rawiller broke his neck and collarbone in

a fall at Cranbourne in 2018, an incident which

ruled him out of race-riding for six months.

Moody celebrates metro double Peter Moody posted his first metropolitan

double since his return to training when

Perennial (Per Incanto) and Diamonds Inthe Sky

(Zoustar) hit the scoreboard under apprentice

Will Price at Caulfield on Wednesday. “We

took four to the races yesterday thinking

they were all in the right race if luck fell their

way and two of them delivered,” the 56-time

Group 1-winning trainer told Racing.com from

the Gold Coast, where he is attending Magic

Millions. Diamonds Inthe Sky now boasts a

record of two wins, two placings and a fourth

from her five starts, while Perennial has two

wins and seven placings from her 12 starts. “We

haven’t got any delusions of grandeur, but they

can slowly step through the grades I reckon,”

Moody added of the duo’s future.

Cup hopeful Finche set for autumn debut Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) contender Finche

(Frankel) is set for a jump-out at Flemington

today ahead of his first autumn campaign

in Australia. The imported six-year-old has

finished in the top ten in the last three runnings

of the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), but he has

yet to race in the autumn having been sidelined

in the early months of both 2019 and 2020.

"For the past two autumn carnivals he had

some little niggles but this time they’ve got him

cherry ripe and I think the Australian Cup looks

the race for him,” part-owner Brae Sokolski told

Racing.com. “I don’t think any of the three big

guns - Verry Elleegant, Sir Dragonet or Russian

Camelot - are going towards it so if you look

at his Turnbull runs over the same course, it’s

a good race for him." The Chris Waller-trained

Finche has placed in the last two runnings of

the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Sokolski

    added: “He hasn’t won a Group 1 but he’s got a

bit of a cult following because he’s such a lovely

    horse and a genuine horse.”

Bargain buy set for Ballina Cup Six-time winner Sea Raider (Reset) will be out

to enhance his terrific strike-rate when the

bargain buy lines up in today’s $65,000 Ballina

Cup (1590m). Purchased by Gold Coast trainer

John Gilmore for $10,000 at the Magic Millions

National Yearling Sale in 2018, Sea Raider has so

far has won six of his 14 starts for prize-money

exceeding $108,000. He was last seen running

    a two and a quarter-length third over 1400

metres at Eagle Farm on January 2. "I've always

had the Ballina Cup in mind for him this prep

and I couldn't be happier with him going into

the race,” Gilmore told Racing NSW. “His work

on Tuesday was good and he is unbeaten in soft

ground, so it will be another bonus if the Ballina

track stays in the soft range. Friday's race will be

the first time he's tackled a race beyond 1400

metres but I'm sure the 1590 metres at Ballina

    will be ideal for him."

Public back at The Valley today The public will return to Moonee Valley

today for the first time since the coronavirus

pandemic struck. A maximum of 5,000 people

will be permitted on track under the official

guidelines, but a crowd of around 2,000 is

expected for the eight-race fixture in line with

the average for this type of meeting. “There

are restrictions still there so it’s still not your

stock standard day or night at the races, but it is

certainly getting somewhere back toward that,”

    MVRC general manager - communications,

Alastair Dwyer, told Racing.com. “From next

Friday night we will start bringing back live

music and the like, so it will start looking more

like what people expect from a ‘Friday Night

    Lights’ perspective.” General admission tickets,

which usually allow patrons to spend the night

on the lawn area, will instead be for grandstand

seats today with tickets to be pre-booked at a

cost of $10. As such, the lawn area will be lined

    with socially-distanced picnic tables.

Childs and McNeil to resume trackwork Promising Victorian apprentices Tayla Childs

and Logan McNeil have both been granted

medical clearance to resume trackwork and

are expected to return to race-riding next

month. Childs, who fractured her ankle in a

freak pre-race incident at Kyneton in October,

confirmed the news on Twitter, while McNeil

hasn’t been seen in a race since May, having

undergone surgery to repair significant damage

to an injured foot. “I had my first day back at

trackwork on Monday,” McNeil told Racing.

com. “It’s been about seven and a half months

since the accident so it was good to finally get

back into the swing of things. It’s still going to

need a bit of time but it’s feeling good. I didn’t

expect it to be this long at all but it just didn’t

recover the way we hoped. I’ll have to wait and

see how it progresses, we’ll take it as it comes,

but I’m hoping that I’ll be ready to go in about

    a month.”

Six-month suspension for apprentice Atkinson Fellow Victorian apprentice Kayla Atkinson has

been disqualified for six months on two charges

relating to a positive urine sample. The 20-year-

old, who is yet to ride in a race and has not

ridden in trials since last March, pleaded guilty

to two charges: providing a sample positive to

a banned substance and to twice substituting

her urine sample. Atkinson was suspended for

six months on the first charge and disqualified

for six months on the second, with the penalties

to be served concurrently. A Racing Victoria

stewards release said a urine sample provided

by Atkinson after riding trackwork at Caulfield

on December 7 was found to contain a banned

substance under AR 136. "When directed to

provide a urine sample, Ms Atkinson substituted

her urine sample on two occasions," the

statement read. Atkinson’s penalty is backdated

to December 7, meaning she will be free to

reapply for a license on June 7.

Consecutive bans for Collett Jason Collett received his second consecutive

    metropolitan suspension at Warwick Farm

on Wednesday when he pleaded guilty to the

charge of careless riding aboard the Clare

    Cunningham-trained Jungle Book (Animal

Kingdom), who won the Benchmark 72 over

1600 metres. Collett, who was suspended for

the same offence at Randwick last Saturday,

admitted to shifting out at the 200-metre

marker when insufficiently clear of Home

Ground (High Chaparral), who was unplaced,

resulting in that horse having to be steadied.

Both charges have resulted in Collett being

suspended from this Sunday until January 30.

    NEW ZEALAND

Tavi Mac steps into Seabiscuit roleAllan Sharrock is hoping his Tavi Mac

(Tavistock) can provide the movie fairytale

    finish to tomorrow’s Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m)

at Trentham. "It's the old battler's tale. The little

horse from humble beginnings up against the

expensive Fastnet Rock mare, and she'll take

some beating too," Sharrock said, assessing

    Tavi Mac's clash with four-time Group 1

winner Avantage (Fastnet Rock), the TAB's

$1.65 favourite for the Telegraph. "It's the old

Seabiscuit story. Just maybe?" Tavi Mac has

won ten of his 15 starts to date but chased

Avantage home when second in the Foxbridge

Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) at Te Rapa last August and

also in his only start at Group 1 level, when he

finished sixth to her third in the Tarzino Trophy

    (Gr 1, 1400m) at Hastings in September. "I can't

fault him. He's glided through his last couple

of wins," Sharrock said. "We've increased the

intensity but he's loved it and he's right on top

of his game at the moment. But he'll need to be

to beat the mare. Look at the Foxbridge Plate.

He swished his tail and made her work all the

way to the line for her win that day. And he's

improved out of sight since then. He's a far

more polished racehorse now. But as we saw in

the Railway, she's improved a lot since then too.

But he's in outstanding condition for this. His

coat has come back to me again. He's peaking

again and his work suggests he's at his best."

Strike-rate standouts set for big day at TrenthamThe stable of Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard

boasts the best strike-rate in New Zealand

this season, and a quality group of runners at

    Trentham tomorrow could further embellish

their impressive record. Benner and Wynyard

have won 15 races so far this season having

saddled only 44 starters. “We can’t really

complain, things have been going pretty well

for us this season,” Benner said. “We’ve got

some nice horses around us, and now we’re

hoping for a big day on Saturday.” The only

thing missing from Benner and Wynyard’s CV

this season is black-type success, which they

will hope to rectify with Bonham (Per Incanto)

and Invisible Spirit (Charm Spirit), who will

take on star northern colt Brando (Savabeel) in

the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m), as well as Titled

(Exceed And Excel) in the Wellesley Stakes

(Listed, 1000m). Bonham has tasted defeat

only once in her four-start career, finishing

1400 metres at Awapuni last Saturday. “She pulled

up sensationally well from last week’s race,”

Benner said. “It was a relatively soft run for her in

the end. They didn’t run the race at a crazy tempo,

she had a nice trip and she really only sprinted in

the last furlong or two. She came through that run

so well, we couldn’t see any reason not to back her

up this Saturday. Group 1 races are so important

for lovely fillies like her, so we were keen to take

a shot at it.” As for Invisible Spirit, Benner said:

“He’s been super consistent. It might be a bit of an

ask this weekend up against the big ones, but he’ll

definitely be a runner’s chance. He’s nicely drawn

and has a good little record behind him. We won’t

be surprised if he runs well.”

    INTERNATIONAL

KSA: Saudi Cup entries revealed In excess of 100 horses from nine different countries

have been entered for the second running of the

USD$20 million Saudi Cup (1800m) at Riyadh

on February 20. Nominations for the world’s

richest race were revealed on Wednesday and

they include a strong US contingent, spearheaded

by Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) winner Swiss

Skydiver (Daredevil), Malibu Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) hero

Charlatan (Speightstown) and Breeders' Cup Dirt

Mile (Gr 1, 1m) scorer Knicks Go (Paynter). Entries

from Europe include the William Haggas-trained

Addeybb (Pivotal), last year’s Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1,

2000m) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)

hero who subsequently landed the Champion

Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) at Ascot. He is one of 17 elite-

level winners to have received a nomination,

joining the likes of John Gosden’s Mishriff (Make

Believe), winner of the 2020 Prix du Jockey Club (Gr

1, 2100m) and an intended starter as a colt owned

and bred by Saudi’s Prince Faisal. There are more

than 400 international entries across the two days

of the Saudi Cup meeting, with Melbourne Cup

(Gr 1, 3200m) stalwart Prince Of Arran (Shirocco)

again featuring among the nominations for the

Long DIstance Turf Handicap (3000m), a race

in which he ran third behind the Call The Wind

    (Frankel) last year.

US: Danceteria second on American debut The Australian Bloodstock-owned Danceteria

(Redoute’s Choice), who finished last in

the 2019 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) won by

Lys Gracieux (Heart’s Cry), ran second on

his American debut at Gulfstream Park on

    Wednesday. Contesting an allowance optional

claimer, run over 1800 metres on turf and worth

    USD$53,000 (approx. AUD$68,000), the now

    Graham Motion-trained Danceteria was ridden

patiently early before staying on powerfully

in the straight to get within three-quarters

of a length of all-the-way winner Phantom

    Currency (Goldencents), trained by Australian

Brian Lynch. A German Group 1 winner,

Danceteria was unable to show his best form

during six Australian starts, last seen running a

ten-length last of eight in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2,

2000m) at Randwick on October 3.

    Coolmore have flexed their might

once more as the 2021 northern

    hemisphere breeding season gets

    underway, with the purchase of

Rich Hill Stud shuttler Vadamos (Monsun)

    from Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland.

    The French-bred son of Monsun

(Konigsstuhl), whose big race wins included

the Prix du Moulin (Gr 1, 1600m) at Chantilly

for trainer Andre Fabre, ended his on-track

    career with two

    fourth placings in the

    2016 Cox Plate (Gr

    1, 2040m) behind

    Winx (Street Cry)

    and the Mackinnon

    Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)

    at Flemington before

retiring to stud. He will stand for a fee of €6,000

    (approx. $9,400) this year.

In an encouraging start to his stud career,

    Vadamos recorded 14 individual two-year-old

winners from his first northern hemisphere

crop, while the Karl Burke-trained Spycatcher

finished a close-up second to subsequent

    Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2000m) winner

Gear Up (Teofilo) in the Acomb Stakes (Gr 3, 7f)

    at York.

Having covered 156 mares in his first season

at Rich Hill Stud from a fee of NZ$15,000,

Vadamos has produced one two-year-old to

race so far ahead of the 2021 Karaka Yearling

Sale which begins on January 24, where he’ll

have 30 yearlings go through the ring across

    Books 1 and 2.

“Vadamos is a smashing looking horse

who has made an excellent start with his

first runners and we’re delighted to get

    him,” said Coolmore representative, Albert

    | 17 |

The strength of Swift Witness’ (Star

Witness) victory in the Aquis Gold

Pearl (1100m) last weekend can be

measured by the fact that she has

firmed into $3.90 favouritism for tomorrow’s

Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m).

This is despite the fact that, on paper, she

has almost five lengths to find on her Wyong

conqueror She’s All Class (I Am Invincible), the

    $4.20 second elect for tomorrow’s $2 million

    feature.

Racing in the Mystery Downs colours of

Francis and Christine Cook, Swift Witness had

held her ground on debut in the Magic Millions

Wyong 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m), but she

showed a tremendous amount of improvement

when she stepped out last weekend.

Ridden by Glen Boss, she sat handy before

drawing clear for a dominant three-length

success over first-starter Glorious Ruby (Your

Song) with favourite Miss Hipstar (Star Turn) a

further three-quarters of a length away in third.

“It was good to see the improvement with

the blinkers, we came up here thinking she had

the ability to be here and deserved a spot in the

(Magic Millions 2YO Classic) field so it will be

good to see her take her place,” Bott said.

“It was a bit of an ask for her to have her

first race in the Wyong Magic Millions, she got

a little bit lost there but she still found the line

    strongly.

“Today she was a bit reactive to a few horses

shifting out but once she really balanced up

and got focused on the task, we were able to see

    a nice turn of foot.

“It wasn’t easy with what happened pre-

race (with the race pushed back after apprentice

Justin Huxtable was kicked by a pony) but she

handled herself remarkably well, she went back to the stalls and was nice

    and relaxed.”

Now, attention turns to tomorrow with Bott seeking his first

Magic Millions 2YO Classic to add to Waterhouse’s four with Assertive

Lad (Zeditave), Excellerator (Marscay), Dance Hero (Danzero) and

    Driefontein (Fastnet Rock).

Since Bott joined the partnership, the pair have had five runners with

Czarson (Stratum) the best performer, finishing fourth in 2019. However,

last year saw subsequent Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner

Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) finish tenth for the stable.

A $260,000 purchase from the Widden Stud draft at last year’s Magic

Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Swift Witness is the second stakes

placegetter out of Taylor’s Command (Commands), joining Gosford

Guineas (Listed, 1200m) runner-up Terminology (Star Witness).

Intriguingly, Terminology finished fourth to Jonker (Spirit Of Boom) in

the Magic Millions lead-up at Wyong before finishing second to Sunlight

(Zoustar) in what was the precursor to the Aquis Gold Pearl, meaning that

Swift Witness has a similar profile but has managed to go one better at

    each of her two starts.

Terminology failed to gain a start in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic

itself - she was second emergency - but she did manage to win the

$250,000 Magic Millions Maiden Plate (1200m) a year later.

Taylor’s Command, a Seymour winner who was tested at stakes grade

in the Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m), is a half-sister to Group 2

winner So Pristine (Zabeel) and Restored (Red Ransom), winner of the

Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Listed, 2000m), a Singapore Group 1.

It is also the family of six-time Grade 1 winner Theatrical (Nureyev),

sire of Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Media Puzzle and Victoria

Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) hero Portland Player among many, as well as other

    top-flight victors like Paradise

    Creek (Irish River), David Junior

    (Pleasant Tap) and Bobby’s

    Kitten (Kitten’s Joy).

    Taylor’s Command has a

    first Star Witness (Starcraft) colt

that will be sold just a couple of

    hours after the Magic Millions

    2YO Classic, while she produced

another filly by the sire in 2020.

She was again served by Star

    Witness in November.
