A FUTURE FOR THE PAST: A SYMPOSIUM TO MARK THE BICENTENARY OF THE RUM HOSPITAL
TIM HORTON is the Registrar of the NSW Architects Registration Board.
IAN INNES is Director, Heritage and Collections at Sydney Living Museums.
As the custodians of The Mint, Sydney Living Museums is delighted to present this symposium reflecting on the bicentenary of the Rum Hospital, A Future for the Past. From its inception the Rum Hospital and the evolution of this Macquarie Street site – from ‘Sydney Slaughterhouse’, to Royal Mint, the NSW Parliament, and Sydney Hospital– has been part of a continuing discourse about the building of Sydney. This symposium is core to SLM’s work, a part of our mission to secure a future for the past, exploring who we were, what we built and how we lived.
Today’s program is an opportunity to look back and better understand the history, heritage and significance of the Rum Hospital; it is also a chance to look forward and consider the future heritage of Sydney. This is particularly pertinent in this year of bicentenaries – of the Rum Hospital, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Government Architect’s Office and as we move towards another milestone, the bicentenary of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hyde Park Barracks. I am delighted to present this program of eminent historians, architects and heritage experts and look forward to sharing these critical conversations today, and into the future.
