Munford’s Memos
Dear Charger Family, welcome to springtime at Isle of Wight Academy. It’s both a busy and exciting time as we return to competitive sports and as we begin to celebrate the end of the year achievements with many of our students. We know there have been struggles, but we feel confident that our instructional platforms and our health protocols have worked well. I personally would like to thank our students, parents and community members for all of their support during this challenging school year. As we continue to move forward into the month of May we encourage parents to remain vigilant in monitoring your students well-being and grades.
As we look back on the month of April we have much to celebrate. National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, French Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society had their induction ceremony. We had our annual spelling bee and our class of 2021 celebrated their college and career choices with the annual Senior Walk. Many of our high school students have been recognized recently in the community for their artwork and leadership. May holds a lot of promise as we look forward, and preparing culminating events for the class of 2021.
As always I encourage you to refer to our school website and social media pages for additional information.
In closing I want to reiterate our gratitude for your continued support and wish you and your family good health and good spirits. Warmer weather and better times are here!
Sincerely,
Mark A. Munford

Isle of Wight Academy was recently awarded a $500 grant from the Exxon Mobil Educational
Alliance Program. This program provides Exxon and Mobil retailers with educational funds to
support the communities they serve. Brian Atwood of Parker Oil Company, Inc. presented the grant
to Headmaster Mark Munford. We would like to thank community partners like Parker Oil
Company who make it possible for us to grow and strengthen our math and science programs for our
students now and for years to come.

Thanks to all those who came out
Tuesday, April 6, to support the
IWA spring blood drive.
Seventeen units of blood were
collected, helping support the Red Cross’ mission of
ensuring critical blood supplies in times of need.
The units collected were up 13% from 15 units collected
in December 2020. Because of the global coronavirus
pandemic, no blood drive was held in April 2020; 28
units were collected in December 2019.
In recent years, the Academy has collected 459 units
from 536 donors in 16 previous blood drives.
Upper School Science
Club members helped
clean up the IWA
campus to celebrate
Earth Day. Students
recycled their trash into
art that is now on
display in Mrs. Butler’s
classroom.
Thank you to Lisa Lugar from Posh Pots
for the beautiful ferns she donated and
planted in our pots by the front office to
help get our school ready to spring!

Several Isle of Wight Academy Juniors were some of the students who were recent graduates
of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce's Student Leadership Institute. The Institute is
comprised of Juniors from local high schools and from area home schools and as the Chamber
website notes, through their classes, "The students learn about team building, utilizing
resources, building self-confidence and making a difference in their communities."

Tatum Zyliak was the 1st Runner Up and Jack Burgess was the

Our 2nd graders made Earth Day mobiles. Each
mobile had hearts attached and students wrote
promises to take care of the earth on each heart.
Our classes had beautiful weather for their recent Story Walk that the Blackwater Regional Library
brought to IWA. The 3rd graders had a great time reading the Story Walk to the Kindergarten classes.

Mrs. Williams’ 2nd graders had a great time with shaky eggs (plastic eggs with rice inside). They
used their eggs to shake out syllables of words! They also enjoyed the sunshine during lunchtime.

A big thank you to the International Paper Foundation for their support through a grant for the
Virginia Readers’ Choice Program . Through this program, IWA was able to receive a variety of
books. Mrs. Schwegel’s 3rd grade class loved this year's book selections which ranged from "Let
the Children March" and "I Need a Hug" to "What Do You Do With All That Poo". The favorite of
our students was "What Do You Do With All That Poo". After they got over laughing about poo,
they were excited to learn all of the eco-friendly ways zoos dispose of the huge amounts of poo
generated by their animals.

IWA Biology classes recently had a
virtual visit from Carlee-Jane Smith.
C.J. is Mrs. Butler’s niece, who lives
with Williams Syndrome, a genetic
condition caused by a deletion of genes
in chromosome number 7. C.J. has
been helping teach IWA science
students about genetics and heredity
every year since 2015!
In Mrs. Barnes-Smith’s Earth Science class, students have
been studying the water cycle, ocean properties and
currents. Students built their own solar power water
distillers to display parts of the water cycle and the power
of the sun. This was an all day project! They set it up in
the courtyard and students checked back throughout the
day to see how their distillers were doing. A few students
were even brave enough to taste their end product.

A Note From The PTO The PTO Board is so thankful for spring and for this beautiful weather. We are also so very thankful for the teachers and administration who have provided an in-person learning experience for our students. There have been obstacles at every juncture, however, the Charger Team has remained strong and helped many families and students by having in-person learning. The week of May 3rd is Teacher Appreciation Week (specifically, Tuesday, May 4th is National Teacher Day). We wanted to let you know the PTO will be providing COVID friendly lunches from Taste of
Smithfield for the teachers and administration. We are unable to have parents on campus so the teachers will pick up their box lunches and enjoy them during their designated lunch time. The PTO was asked if classes could still participate in Teacher Appreciation Week and the answer is “yes”. For smaller items/gift cards that students can carry, students can deliver those items to the individual teachers directly. Larger items such as flowers or fruit baskets must be delivered to the front office and the appropriate teacher will be called. Thank you for your support of our Charger Team!
