Dog Welfare in Ireland

2011: Ireland In Numbers

• 17,386 dogs came into pounds in the Republic of Ireland

• Of these 5,586 (33%) were put to sleep

• An average of 15 dogs per day

• Some pounds put down 84% of dogs that come through their doors, some 1%.

• Stray Dogs have 5 days; Surrendered Dogs have 24 hours

South Dublin County Council (in co-operation with A Dog’s Life)

• Approx. 1,000 – 1,200 dogs come through SDCC pound each year

• A Dog’s Life finds places for approx. 75-80% of them with the rest being rehomed directly due mainly to our bi-weekly Facebook campaigns

• South Dublin County Council’s put to sleep rate was only 6% thanks to the work of A Dog’s Life

Frodo’s Adventure

A Very Bad Hair Day

Today I was abandoned by my previous owner.

I think people call this a bad hair day.

A New Home, A New Start

I was in such a bad state, they had to shave all my hair off. I was so cold, but

my new owner gave me a jumper to stay warm.

Frodo Finds Home

Recognise me? Like my new hairdo?

Sometimes, I don’t even recognise myself.

Sometimes, I wonder how people can do this

to dogs, but mostly I like to think about all the wonderful people

who help us.

A Star is Born

A future Cruft’s Champion?

My brothers and sisters and I were born in a pound, like orphans. Who knows

what life holds for us now?

This isn’t in the script!

The road to success is never straight, but I never thought it would take a turn

into the dog pound.

From Wags to Riches

A Real Underdog!

I was nervous when I competed at Cruft’s, but I knew my pals from the

pound were supporting me, and I made them proud!

This one’s for my dawgs!

My Proudest Day

I’m going to need a bigger kennel for all these prizes!

Dangerous Dogs?

Many people believe that some breeds are bad, just like

me, a Staffordshire Terrier.

Here I am with my scary face!

When you meet me, make up your own mind.

I know that there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

A Word from our Spokesdog

Without all the help from wonderful

fosterers, volunteers and all my new friends at Google, a lot of dogs

would be in doggie heaven.

Some people call it a dog’s life, but for me it’s

the best life ever!

Licks and barks,

Rosita
