One of my previous experiences was being a facilitator at various types of camps
of which involved mainly students as their participants. Having said that, such
role had brought me to various parts in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, up north to
Pera dan to the east in Pahang. !here were leadership, motivational, co"
curricular camps, and the one that # had created my own when # was as ed to
was $%na Soleh& camp. %nd every time # would to go for such camp, # would
bring this new" ind"of"spirit feeling 'of course, depending on what type of camp
and role # was acting as( to wor with the ids.
One of the memories # had was still fresh in my mind when # )rst *oined the team
'of facilitators from +K and #P- #nst. Profesional -aitulmal/( was the camp held
for the heavy smo ers among form 0 students around 1omba dan Hulu Langat
2istricts. #f # remember them correctly, there were 345 participants who were
mainly alays, some were 6hinese and #ndians. Some of this ids smo ed two
boxes of cigarettes per day 'one of them was a little lady # should say(, some
averagely a box per day and so on. 7eedless to say, # was 8uite agitated and
worried as it was my )rst experience dealing with such ids, there were
bombardment of speculations and thoughts in my head.
y friends and # came on the second day 'probably as trials as we stayed thereonly for a day( and we were given short brie)ng of what needed to be done. %fter
a while the students were divided into smaller groups, and each of us was to ta e
one group for an internal ice"brea ing session and a brief tal about smo ing.
!hese ids were very active and # seemed to get the good ones 'not really,
maybe a little(. So # was thin ing, how would # get through these ids9 #
introduced myself )rst and then as ed them to introduce themselves to one
another, and # put up a little game, of which they would be tested about other&s
biodata, with this, # could get them involved and concentrated.
:hat really happened was # too down all the walls of di;erences between me
and them, bridged the gap, put away the pre*udices, and accepted them as who
they were, ids of our future generation. :hat happened all day was mainly on
the concepts # put above. % teacher inspires their students, motivates their
students, build their students& self"esteems, and guide them to success. # also
gave them the chance to spea , for them to prove and deem themselves worthy,

for them themselves, for the school, for the family, and for whatever they
wanted of. 1uess how it turned out9
# rec oned when you treated others as humans, giving them their rights to be
respected, despite the $thing& they were into, they would honour you the same.
%s # was saying that we came on the second day, the )rst day didn&t go very well
with the earlier facilitators as they were treating the ids li e savages, and
convicts while they themselves blew the same smo e they were trying to curb.
!here were very much memories for only a day of facilitating, and # couldn&t write
them all. %s night had covered the earth with its blan et, we ought to leave.
Some of the ids were crying that we had to leave, some were begging for us to
stay until tomorrow. s? up until today, # still eep in touch with one the participants, and he had
stopped smo ing. He had health di@culties now, yet he is still strong. Aor that #
love him due to %llah.
