Founder, Congregation of Holy CrossFr. Moreau founded the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1837 and inspired its members and lay collaborators with a vision of educating the mind and heart of each student.

Moreau desired that the Congregation’s educational institutions serve as catalysts for the transformation of society. Blessed Moreau’s philosophy of education formed the living tradition by which we seek to develop the intellectual, moral and spiritual competencies of our students.

February 11, 1799Born in Laigné-en-Belin, a small, rural village near LeMans, France.

March 1, 1837Founded the Congregation of Holy Cross

January 20, 1873Died in LeMans, France.

September 15, 2007Declared “Blessed” by decree of Pope Benedict XVI

Moreau founded the Holy Cross family in order to respond to pressing social needs, especially for excellence in education. Today, six colleges and universities in the United States are guided by the principles, philosophy, and spirituality of Holy Cross – each with a distinct mission reflective of its historical and geographic circumstances.
