HOLY WEEK
“LET'S MEET WHERE OUR CULTURES MEET”COMENIUS PROJECT 2012-2014
Easter or Holy Week is an important religious celebration in Spain.
It is the annual conmemoration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It is celebrated in March or April, depending on the year.
It is preceded by the Lent period, 40 days of fasting and praying.
PROCESSIONS
Processions are celebrated in the streets. People carry statues of different moments of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. Virgin Mary also appears in these statues.
People who carry the statues wear special robes. Some are called “nazareno” or “penitential” robes.
PALM SUNDAY AND LAST SUPPER
It begins with the “PALM SUNDAY”: Jesus enters in Jerusalem and people receive him with bouquets in their hands.
“THE LAST SUPPER” remembers the final meal that Jesus shared with his Apostles in Jerusalem, before his crucifixion.
HOLY THURSDAY AND HOLY FRIDAY
On Holy Thursday we conmemorate the Last Supper of Christ and his Passion in the processions.
On Holy Friday, we conmemorate the Death of Christ and his crucifixion. The Holy Burial procession it is very famous.
These two days are public holidays in Spain.
RESURRECTION SUNDAY
During the night of the Holy Saturday, Christ resurrection happens.
Christian people go to the Church to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus
There are a lot of processions. That is the end of the Holy Week.
TRADITIONAL EASTER FOOD
As Christian people cannot eat meat during some days of the Holy Week, there are some special dishes:
