A brief guide to local resources for DHMC residents, fellows,

and their families

WELCOME, PARTNERS! Welcome to DHMC and the Upper Valley! Anyone who is a significant other or spouse of a DHMC resident or fellow is considered to be a “DHMC partner.” You have access to many aspects of the DHMC and Dartmouth community (e.g., certain educational events, special discounts). Your resident or fellow will be busy getting adjusted and may not always remember to tell you (or know) what your options are. The DHMC House Staff & Partners Network is here to help you get connected to the community. The DHMC House Staff & Partners Network is a volunteer group of partners and spouses, working together with the GME Office and the House Staff Association dedicated to improving the quality of life of residents, fellows, and their families. From helping new partners find local employment to hosting social events throughout the year, we help people adjust to life in the Upper Valley. One of the resources we provide is this guide. In this document, previous partners share information about daily life, shopping, recreation, child care, and more. Whether you are interested in academics, families, social events, cultural activities, athletics, or community service, you will find an opportunity waiting for you here. We also have a community website and mailing list through Yahoo! groups. Our website is constantly being updated with more links, guides, and announcements for upcoming partner events. Be sure to visit the site and sign up as a member: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dhmcpartners

Although the information presented in this guide and on our website has been compiled from sources believed to be reliable, the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center makes no guarantee as to, and assumes no responsibility for, the correctness, completeness or sufficiency of such information or recommendations. We are not intending to endorse one service over another and we may have missed things! We are continuing to add new listings and tips passed along from our partner members. If you find a resource or event that you would like included for next year, please feel free to send us a note! We look forward to meeting you. Welcome! New Hampshire Insurance: Insurance is not mandatory in New Hampshire, although it is hoped that responsible drivers will carry at least the minimum limits of liability insurance. The minimum limits on a NH policy are $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage, with $25,000/$50,000 uninsured motorists coverage and $5,000 medical payments. Even though coverage under normal circumstances is not mandatory, if you are involved in an accident, DUO or other incidents, you may be required to get insurance in order to keep your license valid, and provide proof of coverage for 3 years to the State on an SR-22 form. Keep in mind that should the incident happen in Vermont, your driving rights in Vermont can be suspended until such time as you provide that state with the required SR-22. You will be personally be liable for all costs and damages related to an at-fault accident if you do not have insurance. Vermont Vermont Mobile Unit – an alternative to going all the way to Montpelier: The American Legion Hall, 36 Main Street, White River Junction, VT www.aot.state.vt.us/dmv/ABOUTUS/OFFICES/OFFICESWhiteRiverJct.htm Open every other Monday & Tuesday and, every other Wednesday (except scheduled holidays). The amount of time could be anywhere from ten days of employment to sixty days. If you are from the U.S.: You will need to take an eye exam at the mobile unit and show your current state driver’s license and your social security card. If you are from outside the U.S.: You will need to take an eye exam and written and road driver’s tests and show your current driver’s license and your social security card. To register your car, you must have all paperwork in order when you arrive at the mobile unit. This unit will not give 60-day temporary plates. Bring your car title, registration, mileage, the correct address of any lien-holder, and proof of taxes in any previous state. You must also have a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) verification. If you choose to get VIN verification before coming to Vermont, the verification must be done by a state police officer and the paperwork must include their signature and badge number. Vermont Insurance: Liability insurance is mandatory in the State of Vermont! You will be required to show proof of this coverage when getting a driver’s license and each time you have your vehicle inspected. MISCELLANEOUS Events Calendars: Valley News—local paper features a nice week’s worth of updated events. Thursday provides ideas for weekend planning, and Sunday’s calendar contains a listing of exhibits. www.vnews.com/calendar/calendar.htm Apple Orchards The area provides a variety of orchards where each autumn you can pick your own apples, or your own pumpkins. Try Poverty Lane Orchards in Lebanon. At Riverview on River Road in Plainfield you can watch cider being pressed, or take a horse-cart ride through the trees. Route 5 - Vermont A leisurely spring, summer or autumn ride up Route 5 from White River all the way up past Newbury will take you an entire day, or longer, and yield a wide variety of diversions: maple syrup stands in the spring, dairy farms, orchards, the antiques market at Ely, as well as passing through some beautiful scenery.
