New Employee, Ben Glass on RoGator

By Todd LawrenceMeet our new Director of Precision Ag

Technologies, Ben Glass. Ben enjoys being outdoors, so this is the perfect job for him. Ben is a recent graduate of the University of Florida with a Masters Degree in Food Resources Economics in Agri-Business.

Ben will be working with the latest technology in precision ag. As with most everything in today’s world, technology has a significant impact. From cell phones to tablets and many other items, we all continue to adopt new technologies everyday. Farmers Cooperative and our farmer customers are no different. Farmers Cooperative saw the need to have a staff member that can help our farmers not only collect data but also interpret the data and help farmers make good decisions based on accurate and reliable data.

BEN IN HIS new position will help the farmer gather data throughout the growing season so that better decisions can be made in the future that will improve yield and the bottom line as well.

Collection of the data begins before the crop is planted with soil samples in 2 ½ acre grids. The samples are sent off to the lab for analysis. The data is then interpreted and a variable rate prescription is prepared for the application to the field. The prescription is then entered into the computer of the Ro-Gator’s variable rate applicator. When the application is made, the computer and GPS will automatically adjust the rates as the RoGator applies fertilizer across the field as the prescription is applied.

The next tool in our precision ag tool-box is Aqua Spy soil moisture monitoring probes. Ben has been busy installing these probes in fields that will help to better manage irrigation usage.

Once again, Ben helps the farmer in-terpret the real time data so the farmer can make better informed decisions about water consumption of the crop. The data shows the most direct impact to superior yield is assuring that water and nutrients exist in the Active Root Zone (ARZ) when and where the plant attempts to uptake these vital elements. The use of soil moisture probes have seen yield increases of up to 40% from managing the Active Root Zone. Ben will continue to work with farmers throughout the growing season, and he will help collect yield data at the end of the crop season. At the end of the crop season he will help farmers look at all the data that was collected during the growing season to start working on a plan for the next year’s crop. With the collected data, Ben can help the farmers see what areas were managed well and what can be improved the following year.

Co-op’s Newest Tool: Ben GlassFarmers Cooperative believes that

setting yourself up for the best possible yield by controlling what you can is far superior than leaving it up to nature only. As you can see, Ben has a lot of tools in his Precision Ag Toolbox to help our farmer customers. Of course, as technology continues to change, Farmers Cooperative will continue to add tools to the toolbox.

Mr. Glass comes from a long line of farm-ers. His grandparents, Kenneth and Jane Mc-Leod have been loyal patrons of Farmers Coop-erative for over 50 years. In fact, the McLeod’s Family Farm dates back to 1867, so Ben knows just a little bit about farming from poultry houses to row crops. Although his Dad’s parents, Hilda and Fred Glass, are deceased, Ben remembers many of the les-sons they taught him to be considerate of other people.

Ben is a Suwannee County Native with lots of good work experience. For example, he has worked on his Aunt Barbara and Uncle Eustis Gamble’s farm, and you can be assured he knows a lot about keeping poultry houses clean. Working on Grandpa Kenneth McLeod’s farm he learned many ways not to waste time or money on the farm.

BEN’S ALSO worked as customer service at a local pawn shop that gave him great insight about the lack of money cus-tomers had when they would pawn some of their prized possessions.

Probably some of the greatest knowl-edge he gained was when he was employed with the Suwannee County Courthouse in Live Oak. Ben remembers the massive Re-cords Section of deeds, marriages, divorces, and final judgments and so much of Suwannee County history.

Sunday morning is a time for family at Clayland Baptist Church where Ben learned a lot of the good values that are instilled in him today. He is an active member at Clay-land and teaches the College and Career Level Class as well as serves on the Cemetery Committee.

Welcome Aboard Ben! We feel we are very fortunate to have our new employee, Ben Glass with such great credentials.
