This is a sentiment known by camps across America, and the power of camp is alive in our backyard. Wesley Woods Christian Camp and Conference Center in Grand Valley, PA is bringing life changing experiences to children and youth from across Western Pennsylvania.

At Wesley Woods, campers experience a week (or half-week) of nature and adventure while they build curiosity, relationships, confidence, and faith. Camps are available for every age group, from toddlers to teens, and individual programs seek to meet a wide variety of interests, including adventure, sports, horse, swim, science, arts, special needs, and sampler camps. No matter their age or interests, campers make lifelong memories and friends, develop interpersonal and leadership skills, and experience God’s love in an atmosphere of Christian learning – and, they have crazy, messy, over-the-top fun.

This summer, Wesley Woods will celebrate the theme “Fearless Faith.” Through activities, music, teaching, and exploration, campers will learn to face their fears with confidence and faith as they rely on a community. Campers will leave their week in the woods with the knowledge that they are capable of anything and loved by a mighty God.

National RoadChainsaw Carving Festival Wesley Woods

The 2016 13th annual National Road Chainsaw Carving Festival, managed by the Confluence Lions Club, will host chainsaw carvers from all over the US and other countries. They will be carving, displaying, and selling their carved items to the public. Last year there were 55 carvers that participated. Each carver is asked to donate one or more (maximum of 4) carvings to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The auction is held on Saturday June 18th at 3:00 p.m. Don’t miss the opportunity to own this “extreme” art. Net proceeds from the festival benefits the Somerset County VisionCorps, an organization whose mission is ...to provide social, vocational, rehabilitative and educational services for people who are blind or whose vision is impaired…). Over the past 11 Festivals the Confluence Lions Club has donated $111,800 to the Somerset County VisionCorps (previously known as the Somerset County Blind Center).

When you think serenity, what comes to mind? Clear blue skies, the subtle babbling of a stream, peaceful and quiet surroundings and peace of mind that comes with these features. There are few places in this world where this is possible but one such place may be much closer and more accessible than you may think.

Located just across the Yough River in historical and scenicConfluence, Pennsylvania is a restaurant, decorated in Victorian furnishings, nestled on the edge of a beautiful 1/4 mile section of the Youghiogheny River. This restaurant is called “River’s Edge Cafe”.

River’s Edge Café, historically the Old Kinsinger Estate,established in 1988 by Robert Benns and Anna Marie Yakubisin is one of the area’s most unique restaurants because of it’s many unique features and facets. Accessible by car, boat, bike or foot, the restaurant offers indoor and outdoor dining, meals expertly prepared by Chef June Butler for lunch, dinner and special occasions, a bed and breakfast is located next door and many other courtesies that will be sure to please you. The menu includes an extremely wide variety of choices, from seafood, steaks, sandwiches, soups, salad, appetizers & desserts. We also offer a variety of wine, beer and your favorite spirit.

While visiting at the River’s Edge Café you will be asked your preference of indoor or outdoor dining. Indoors you will have the peaceful, air conditioned, homey atmosphere surrounded by Victorian furnishings, seated in solid hard wood furniture. Outdoors you will feel next to nature with the river running next to you as you are seated on a covered deck encircling the restaurant. While outdoors you may sit and relax while watching the duck’s play and frolic in the river, fly fishermen loop casting over the waters and kayakers and rafters floating the section of the river known as the Middle Yough. During the Spring and Fall (April, May, September and October) the Café is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for lunch and dinner (11am to 9 pm, even later on Saturdays). In the Summer, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Cafe is open six days a week (closed on Mondays).

The rustic, Tuscan-style decor provides a comfortable, warm atmosphere.

The bar features two tables with chandeliers that offer the perfect cozy tucked away spot for dinner and drinks. The back dining room complete with a fireplace is the perfect backdrop for parties of up to 35 or 40 people. Whether it’s a rehearsal dinner, an engagement party, bridal or baby shower or other celebration, Fabrizi’s Cucina Fresca will be sure its a memorable event. If it’s a buffet style function or a more formal sit down type of event, Chef Chad works with the client and will customize the current menu or prepare dishes not on the menu to make sure the food is the perfect accompaniment for your function.

The National Road was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1976 and a State Heritage Park in 1994. Along the 90 miles of road in Pennsylvania, 79 sites have been deemed eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Of those, many have already been nominated. In 1995 the Road was designated a State Scenic Byway and it received the National Scenic Byway “All-American Road” designation in 2002.

WASHINGTON COUNTYS-BridgeThe S-Bridge is a historic stone bridge built around 1818. It was part of the Cumberland Road (later National Road) and passes over Buffalo Creek. Searights Toll HouseSearights Toll House, constructed when the Commonwealth took control of the road in 1835, stood on the highway itself with a long, hinged gate to block all traffic until the appropriate fares had been paid. In 1912, there were almost no good roads to speak of in the United States. The relatively few miles of improved road were only around towns and cities. A road was “improved” if it was graded; one was lucky to have gravel or brick. Asphalt and

concrete were yet to come. Most of the 2.5 million miles of roads were just dirt: bumpy and dusty in dry weather, impassable in wet weather. Worse yet, the roads didn’t really lead anywhere. They spread out aimlessly from the center of the settlement. To get from one settlement to another, it was much easier to take the train.

Carl Fisher recognized this situation, and an idea started to take hold. In 1912, he dreamed of a highway spanning the continent, from coast to coast. He called his idea the Coast-to-Coast Rock Highway. Communities along the route would provide the equipment and in return would receive free materials and a place along America’s first transcontinental highway. The highway would be finished in time for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and would run from the exposition’s host, San Francisco, to New York City.

Despite Henry Ford not willing to support the project, two other men from the automobile industry who pledged money to Fisher’s idea would later play major roles in the highway’s development: Frank Seiberling, president of Goodyear, and Henry Joy, president of the Packard Motor Car Company. Henry Joy came up with the idea of naming the highway after Abraham Lincoln. The name “Lincoln” captured Fisher’s fancy; he realized it would give great patriotic appeal to the highway. Fisher asked Joy if he wanted to be involved directly with the highway project. At first, Joy was hesitant, but soon he wholeheartedly supported the project and became the primary spokesman for the highway.

The Lincoln Highway Association set up a system of “consuls” along the highway who would act as local ambassadors. They would represent the highway in local affairs, assist visitors, and let the headquarters know of matters concerning the highway.

However, in 1914, there wasn’t much of a highway to be concerned about. No improvements had been made to the Lincoln Highway, and with Ford’s refusal to chip in and growing disinterest of people left off the route, the ten-million-dollar fund that Fisher had set up had stalled at the halfway point. Joy decided to abandon the fund and instead redirect the association to a new goal: educating the country for the need for good roads made of concrete, with an improved Lincoln Highway as an example. It would oversee the construction of concrete “seedling miles” way out in the countryside to emphasize the superiority of concrete over unimproved dirt.

In 1921, the federal government passed the Federal Highway Act of 1921. Like a similar act passed in 1916, it provided $75 million of matching funds to the states for highway construction. However, unlike the 1916 act, the 1921 act required the states to identify 7 percent of its total mileage was “primary”; only these roads would be eligible for federal funds. In most states in which it ran, the Lincoln Highway was the obvious choice as a federal road, but there were a few exceptions.

The association ceased activity at the end of 1927. Its last major activity was to mark the highway not as a route from one destination to another, but as a

memorial to Abraham Lincoln. On September 1, 1928, thousands of Boy Scouts fanned out along the highway. At an average of about one per mile, they installed small concrete markers with a small bust of Lincoln and the inscription, “This highway dedicated to Abraham Lincoln.” By the late 1940s, the Lincoln Highway started to fade away. A new generation of Americans were born, one which

Since 1996, the not-for-profit Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor has worked with a number of local, state and federal partners on heritage preservation, sustainable community development, and responsible land conservation in south-central Pennsylvania.

had grown up with paved roads and a numbered highway system. Most Baby Boomers, and even more of their children, have never heard of the Lincoln Highway. However, not everyone has forgotten. The Lincoln Highway Association was reactivated in 1992, dedicated to preserving the highway. With the help of the association, the Lincoln Highway will always stay alive.
