From the Principal’s Desk
This week second quarter report cards and a copy of the upcoming state testing schedule will be mailed home to families at Lakewood High School. The testing schedule is also part of this newsletter.
Starting in mid-February and continuing through the end of March, we will be implementing the first round of testing that was outlined for us by the state. Our goal is to maintain a sense of normalcy and continued instructional coherence for students during this first window of testing.
Most of the early testing will be for current freshmen (true 9th graders not repeat 9th graders or 10th graders in 9th grade Math, Science and English courses) as part of the new graduation requirements.
The U.S. History and Government exams, however, will test any students currently enrolled in those courses. Students who took Government first semester will not be expected to take the Government Exam.
This year we are also expected to administer the OGT to current 10th graders, as they still are held accountable to the former graduation requirements. These tests continue to be high stakes for those students and we will continue with a modified OGT schedule during the week of March 16th-20th. This will be the final year of OGT testing. Students will be tested in the completed large group areas that will serve as lunch rooms during transition. Testing will take place 1st, 2nd and 3rd periods, starting on February 16th. Testing groups will be assigned alphabetically.
Students will be instructed to report to school at 8:00am, regardless of late arrival status, and will be sent to either one of the large group spaces or to Lecture Hall 2 for testing. Various smaller venues will be used in compliance with students’ 504 or IEP testing accommodations.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we adjust to meet the new graduation requirements and prepare students for the new assessments. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
February looks to be an important month for the
district as the first round of online assessments
associated with the Common Core will be given
to students in grades 3-12 for English and math.
High school students will also be tested in
science and social studies. The testing begins the
week of Feb. 16 and continues into March. This
will be the first real test of our preparedness for
these new online tests and I am confident that all
the hours of work our staff has dedicated to
getting our students ready will yield positive
results.
February is also the month that we will see
another one of our elementary buildings
demolished. Lincoln started coming down in late
January. Roosevelt will follow this month.
Grant, which had more asbestos removal to be
done, may come at the end of the month or in
March.
While there are bittersweet feelings about saying
goodbye to these long-serving school buildings,
the progress being made toward new buildings
rising on those sites is exciting. The knowledge
that all this activity will lead to one day
providing our students with the best facilities for
learning makes it all worth it.

I would like to send a big THANK YOU to Mona Atfield and Tonya Nanni for heading up the Educator of the Year and Helping Hands committee. PTA extends congratulations to Educator of the Year, David Hille (Physics), Helping Hands winner, Kathy Murphy (Educational Assistant), and all the nominees. PTA is grateful for the hard work and dedication of our wonderful faculty and staff at LHS! The Reflections ceremony will be February 3 at the Civic. Details about the winners will be in the next issue. This is the slate of officers for 2015-16 nominated at the January LHS PTA meeting. We will be voting on the

Guidance News
Freshman – Sophomores – Juniors
It is that time of year already… the chance for LHS Guidance
Counselors to meet with each student on their caseload and
plan courses to take for the next school year! We will be
sending course guide books home and course request
worksheets the first week of February. Counselors will then
meet with students individually during their science classes
within the first couple weeks of February. If your child does not
have a science class or is absent on the day assigned to his or
her teacher, please have your child see their counselor. During
these scheduling appointments, counselors will be reviewing
student course selections, discussing career and college
planning, and reviewing grades and credit status. We will then
send verifications home to parents at the end of the month to
add or make any changes.
Parents of 9th – 11th graders – Come to a panel discussion
with local college reps to talk about the application process and the transition to college. February 12th at 6:30 pm, Lecture Hall 2
Juniors - Visit the Guidance page to learn about low-cost

Senior transcripts are being updated. If the college you applied to requires a “Mid-Year Report” on the Common App, please notify the Guidance Department at (216) 529-4032 immediately so that counselors can update your account. Please note that not all colleges require this as part of the application process.
Mrs. Pam Sandoval of the Cleveland Scholarship Programs presented our annual Financial Aid Night and tips for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Visit her in the CollegeNow office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for information and help.

NEW PROGRAM FOR 2015 – 2016:
BROADCASTING TECHNOLOGY
Next year, this 4-course program is available to freshmen, sophomores, or juniors. It can be taken in a variety
of combinations (e.g. 1 course per year for 4 years or 2 courses per year for 2 years). Students interested in
technical and support careers in radio, television and journalism should look into this new program. Visit the
West Shore webpage or stop by the West Shore office for more information.
SOPHOMORES – Many West Shore Career-Tech programs begin in the junior year. All sophomores attended an assembly in early January to learn about the many opportunities available. To enroll in a West Shore program, students need to complete an application prior to class scheduling. Stop by the West Shore office to pick up an application or download it from the West Shore web page. Students are also encouraged to talk to the career-tech teacher to learn more.

2015 After Prom Dear Family and Friends of LHS Seniors,
Lakewood High School Class of 2015 Prom will be on May 30, 2015! A committee is planning an exciting,
fabulous After Prom party to provide an excellent, safe option for our seniors and their guests to entertain
themselves after the actual dance. The fun starts at 11:30 pm and ends at 2:30am.
This party is a 36 year old tradition for Lakewood High School and is funded from donations and fundraisers!
The total cost of the party for 500 young adults in the past has been more than $10,000.
As we begin efforts to make this year’s party the place to be and to be seen, we welcome any donations you
can give. Donations may be in the form of time, money, food, prizes, and “gifts in kind.”

money making events to fund the party of the year!

UPCOMING PTA EVENTS
PTA Wellness Series: It’s All About You
The Lakewood Council of PTAs is hosting a wellness series focused on taking care of yourself
first. The series will feature workshops specifically designed for busy people looking to create
balance and wellness in their lives. Participants will leave each workshop with the know-how to
incorporate techniques into their day to day routine to help reduce stress and better manage a
hectic schedule. Each instructor is a highly knowledgeable, experienced professional certified in
their field of expertise.
The next installment in the series is “Yoga Basics” followed by “Drum Circle: Healing with the
Power of Music and Drums on February 25th, 7pm at Garfield Middle School. To register email
[email protected]. The series is free for PTA member, $5 per workshop for non-
members. Participants may join PTA the night of the event.
“Yoga Basics”
An overview of what the practice of yoga has to offer to overall health and well-being.
Participants will learn about the origins of yoga as well as how yoga can benefit the
physical body through stretching and strengthening as well as increased balance and
flexibility. We’ll also discuss the mental and emotional benefits of yoga to reduce stress
and promote more calm, peace and clarity for the mind and spirit. Instructor will lead a
yoga class to introduce basic poses and breathing exercises that can be easily
incorporated into a daily lifestyle.
Darlene Kelbach is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with the Yoga Alliance and teaches
yoga as a freelance instructor throughout the Cleveland/Akron area. She has been
practicing yoga for approximately 11 years. Darlene teaches at Studio 11 in Tremont, Namaste in Sagamore
Hills, and Mentor-Heisley Racquet & Fitness Club in Mentor. In addition, she teaches with Zenworks Yoga, a
non-profit organization that brings yoga to underserved students & their families in the City of Cleveland. She
is currently working with PreK and Kindergarten classes this school year. She also offers specialized yoga
events, personalized yoga sessions as well as corporate group classes.
“Drum Circle: Healing with the Power of Music and Drums” with Tommy Melaragno & Friends
Music is a powerful and moving element in all of our lives. Tommy Melaragno will be
discussing the history of music and drums, and sharing evidence of its healing power.
Tommy, along with a few guests, will lead the group in playing/drumming with percussion
instruments. Participants are encouraged to bring their own drum or percussion instrument.
A limited amount of drums will be available to share.
Tom Melaragno was born in Lakewood, the youngest of 8 siblings. His brothers, sisters, and friends brought
him up on many different genres of music. In high school he was turned on to college radio Grateful Dead and
most importantly reggae music. His first reggae album was legend by Bob Marley, then Jimmy cliff live, but the
album that really got him hooked on reggae was Sunsplash 1981. Tommy Reggae has been with Jah
Messengers Reggae Band since 2012. He feels blessed to be part of such a beautiful family. "Reggae's
heartbeat and soul has been a part of Cleveland's music scene since 1978. To be a part of it and to speak the
message of Jah has been a true gift,”
Human Trafficking 101
Who is trafficked, where does trafficking take place, and both how and why does it
occur? What is being done in terms of anti-trafficking efforts? What about human
trafficking laws and safe harbor in Ohio? What can you do to help combat human
trafficking?
Speakers from The Collaborative Initiative to End Human Trafficking will be presenting to the Lakewood
Council of PTAs on March 4th, 7:30pm at the Lakewood Board of Education. Learn how this horrific practice is
affecting the Lakewood community and the potential danger for kids and families.
