Summer Projects - Part 2

Remembering our Sick

Please pray for those in our parish who are sick, their families and caregivers: Bob DeFilippis

by Father Michael Last week I shared with you how I built a little workshop in the house. That project really was not planned ahead of time. It began with my wanting to sort out a box of nuts and bolts, and it unexpectedly, but happily, grew into a major undertaking. My other project that consumed my efforts has been in the planning stages for a few years now. In the parish house there is a rather long hallway. On one side there are windows that face the front yard, on the other a long blank wall. I have been thinking for some time now that the blank wall would be a great place to create a collage of “neat stuff” from my life. So, for the past few weeks I have been hanging little shelves, picture frames and some track lighting (I definitely needed help on that part of the project). I’ve been going through boxes of all different kinds of little mementos I have collected over the years; some of them are from my childhood, and some are from different parishes where I served. I have many photos from family, travels and pastoral assignments. It has been a lot of work to go through everything, but also a delightful stroll down memory lane. There are still many picture frames to fill. It will take a while to complete this undertaking, but I am pleased with what has taken place up to this point. I will never again live in a place where I have so much personal space. Over the years I have acquired lots of stuff. I thought if I cannot make use of it here and now, I will never have another opportunity like this again. As much stuff as I have taken out and put on display, I still have a whole lot more stuff tucked away. It was appropriate for me that the gospel last week was about the foolish man who thought his task was to build bigger barns for all his stuff. That is what I initially thought, “Where should I store all the extra stuff I still have?” I have come to the conclusion, it is now time to be reducing barn space; just because I have an entire basement doesn’t mean I need to keep it filled. For the seven years before I came to Holy Cross I was Chaplain at St. John the Baptist High School. For a variety of reasons, during that time I lived in four different rectories. You would have thought that moving all that stuff so many times would have inspired me to look at what I have been hauling around. But, it has taken me some time to come to that conclusion. If all goes well, you may notice a few extra garbage cans at the end of my driveway. As part of the project I placed on the wall a quote from Psalm 4, “What can bring us happiness?” many say. Several years ago on retreat that line jumped out to me. Where and what will bring happiness? For me, the treasures that I display all remind me of the good people and rich blessings that have been part of my life. While we cannot hold onto everything that has been part of our lives, we can remind ourselves of the moments, people and places that have brought us closer to God.

PARISH NEWS

Anointing of the Sick In the past, people received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick only when they were

gravely ill. However, the Church believes that the Anointing of the Sick should be

experienced while we are still able to be aware of God’s peaceful presence within us.

You are strongly encouraged to receive this Sacrament if you are

having upcoming surgery, are dealing with a chronic or debilitating

illness, are suffering from addiction, mental health issues or frailty.

On the first Sunday of each month, the Sacrament of the Anointing of

the Sick is offered after the 9:30 AM Mass. This Sunday, August 7th,

the Anointing will be offered.

advertising in the bulletin. Each weekend, well over a

thousand people attend Mass at Holy Cross, most of

whom live and shop in Nesconset and the surrounding

areas. Also, our bulletin is on our website pothc.org and

reaches thousands of area families with information

about your business.

Will the Senate Pass

The Conscience

Protection Act?

On July 13th, the House of Representatives passed

the Conscience Protection Act, which provides

legal protections to doctors, nurses, hospitals and

all health care providers who choose not to provide

abortions.

“Whoever you are – whatever you believe – no one

would be forced to violate their conscience – least

of all by the federal government,” said House

Speaker Paul Ryan.

The United Sates Conference of Catholic Bishops

says this Conscience Protection Act closes several

loopholes in current law that are allowing States to

mandate abortions be performed or covered by

Catholic and other faith-based hospitals and health

care providers. “We’re grateful to those members

of both parties who support the civil rights of con-

science,” said New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan and

Baltimore Archbishop William Lori.

“Disturbing new actions to force healthcare providers

to participate in the destruction of human life cry out

for an immediate federal remedy.”

The USCCB, July 7, 2016.

The bill must now go to the Senate for approval and, if

passed, on to the President. Now is the time for

citizens to notify their senators how they feel about

freedom of conscience.
