The Holy Days of Lent
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will take place after the 9:30 Mass this weekend.
by Father Michael The days of Lent have begun. This season can be a rich gift and blessing. While it is never easy to sacrifice or focus on our need for forgiveness, it can be a beautiful way to grow in self understanding and our relationship with God. I pray these days are holy and grace filled so that we can continue to grow in holiness as individuals, a community, and a nation. May God bless us all. Every year priests are expected to participate in some program or opportunity for ongoing formation and education. Last week I attended the annual Religious Education Congress which is held in Anaheim, California. Admittedly, getting out to the West Coast is a bit of an effort. But, I believe this particular offering is worth the journey. There are over 200 workshops offered in addition to keynote speakers, prayer opportunities, and liturgy. There are many nationally known speakers from the disciplines of spirituality and education. It is a unique opportunity to hear many charismatic presenters. Over 40,000 people who are involved in various aspects of ministry gather for this annual event. There is a great energy and enthusiasm for ministry and the Church. It is an uplifting event, and I was blessed to be able to participate. Many of the workshops I chose surrounded the theme of preaching and God’s Word. I enjoy hearing new perspectives or techniques in which God’s Word can be proclaimed with greater effectiveness. I attended an awesome workshop that addressed those who proclaim God’s Word. I hope to be sharing many insights from that workshop with our own Lectors. The conference took place within the shadow of Disneyland, but there was no time to visit Mickey. I was looking forward to enjoying some Californian sunshine, but no luck. The temperature was in the 30’s each morning. Although it warmed up a bit during the day, strong afternoon winds created a nasty wind-chill by sunset. But, it was still a rich and rewarding experience. Sometimes guardian angels reveal their presence in unexpected ways. For me, they recently revealed themselves as auto mechanics. A few weeks ago, I shared with you my frustration of having the transmission on my Jeep fail only to be told that it was not covered under warranty. Fred at Lakeview Auto was my chief guardian angel. Between Fred and his colleague at A-1 Transmission in Huntington, they demonstrated to the folks at Jeep that the mechanical failures in my vehicle were parts that are covered by warranty. With no benefit to themselves, they went to bat on my behalf, and in the end saved me a $1,200 repair bill. I am most grateful for their efforts. (Anyone interested in a good used Jeep? It is only driven to church on Sundays.)

PARISH OUTREACH
Eat Simply… So Others May Simply Eat
Lent offers us a unique period of time to evaluate our relationship with the
Lord, with our neighbors and with the world. Prayer, fasting and works of charity are
activities we employ to assist us in improving these aspects of our daily life.
For the last twenty-six years, we at Holy Cross have embraced a special Lenten
Parish Project, EAT SIMPLY SO OTHERS MAY SIMPLY EAT.
EAT SIMPLY is a voluntary way for us to be involved in
consciously sacrificing better meals for simpler meals during
Lent. Our joint effort to EAT MORE SIMPLY SO OTHERS
MAY SIMPLY EAT unites us in a special way with one another
and also with those who are struggling on Long Island.
We encourage you not only to participate in this program, but also to
discuss it at the dinner table with your children and family members. Many of us
are not consciously aware of the number of people that are poor and hungry right
here in our own area. During 2016, our Outreach pantry served approximately
100 people each month.
The Lenten envelopes marked EAT SIMPLY…SO OTHERS MAY SIMPLY EAT,
will be available throughout the weekends of Lent. We suggest that you place the
envelope in a prominent place in your kitchen as a reminder of how you and your
family will be uniting yourselves with our struggling neighbors and with the starving
of the world. We encourage you to reflect, discuss and to decide how you will eat
more basic meals during Lent.
Each weekend or whenever you choose during Lent, you may place your
envelope in the basket on the pillar by the Altar or in the collection basket. The
monies donated will be used to feed those who are struggling in our local area. We
are continually grateful for the very generous response of our parishioners of Holy
Cross in donating money, food and supermarket gift cards, which allows us to meet
their needs.
