18th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 3, 2014
“Taking the five loaves
and the two fish, and
looking up to heaven, he
said the blessing, broke the
loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate
and were
satisfied, and they picked
up the fragments left over -
twelve wicker
baskets full. Those who
ate were about five thousand men, not counting
women and children.”

Vacation Time (part 1) - Holy, Sacred and Fun
with Father Michael
I’m happy to report I am enjoying some R & R. Allow me to use this time to give a few reflections on my appreciation of vacation and travel. I’m grateful to my mother for many things. But in regards to travel, she opened that door to me at the age of 6. It was the summer after my father died that my mother thought it would be good for the family to get a little vacation. Up to this point we really had never traveled. Summer time was filled with lots of activities at home and day trips into New York City. Somehow she heard about this little family resort in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. So, that August my Mom and her sister, along with my brother and two sisters headed north. Although my Mom drove, she was not up for a long road trip like that. So, our means of getting there included taking the subway into the city and then getting on a Trailways bus for an eight hour ride. The final leg of the journey would be in a car the resort would send for us after we got off the bus. At the end of a long and winding road we would arrive at a place called Moosilauke Inn. It was a neat little resort. By today’s travel standards it probably would not even earn one star, but it was our little corner of paradise. The rooms had no telephone, air conditioning, or television. The highlight of the Inn was their weekly Bingo game. And, on Saturday night the Chub Benjamin Band played. Their highlight was getting everyone up to dance the “Alley Cat.” (Sounds like a wild place, doesn’t it?) The resort was tucked away on the side of a mountain with a gorgeous view. It was adjacent to a national forest, so there was endless nothingness. The food was great. There was a pool and lots of woods with hiking trails that kept my brother and me busy from morning to night. There was a small golf course and tennis courts that we never used. But, we did try our hand at shuffleboard. There were wild blueberries to pick. And, when I was very young I remember chasing butterflies. Even looking at the stars at night filled us with delight. We would spend one week there, but it seemed like an eternity. There was something magical about having a dedicated block of time for fun. There was never a schedule of activities, but we always had something to do. We really did not do much sightseeing; that little corner of the mountain kept us content. Even when we were home we often found great happiness and peace in recalling happy moments at Moosilauke or anticipating our next visit. More to come . . . Enjoy these days of summer.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
In today’s Gospel, the disciples gave Jesus all the food they had, and, with His blessing, there was more than enough for everyone.
How difficult was it for the disciples to give Jesus all that they had?
In what ways do you share all you have, not just your “leftovers”?
Consider sharing your “loaves and fishes” by donating food to our Food Pantry.
