Queridos Todos,

My Dear People,
Today we celebrate All Saints Day as we honor all holy men and women who have gone before us and enjoy the glory of sainthood. We often think of the saints as out-of-this-world holy people who are far beyond our own experience or sense of our own goodness. When we pray the Litany of the Saints, we ask for the intercession of many saints who lived centuries ago in a different time and culture. They can seem far away. However, this solemnity reminds us that at one time they were ordinary people just like us, living ordinary lives in faithfulness to Gospel values. Our call each day is to strive for holiness in our own lives as we try to emulate the saints of our church.
Monday is All Souls Day. Each year the Church calls to mind the holy souls who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. We will have many opportunities for you to come to mass to mark this day. Mass with the school will be celebrated at 8:40 a.m. (no mass on Friday). There will also be mass at 12:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. At 7 p.m. we will celebrate a bilingual mass. At this mass we will remember all those who have been buried from our parish over the past year in a special way.
Last week, we celebrated stewardship of our school as our principals spoke after the Masses and members of the school community helped co-host our Hospitality Weekend in the Friends and Family Hall. If you or anyone you know is interested in exploring Catholic education, join us at 9 a.m. in the Blessed Teresa Room of the parish center for our next school tour this coming Thursday. All Saints Day• Día de Todos los Santos
All Saints Day
First Reading – Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14 • Good stewards understand salvation comes from Christ as symbolized by the white garment in the Sacrament of Baptism, which washes away the stain of sin. • Christian stewards strive to build a strong relationship with God through prayer, meditation and adoration.
Psalm – 24:1-6 • Do we strive to be Christ’s faithful stewards with sinless hands and clean hearts like the saints?
Second Reading – 1 John 3:1-3 • God’s great love calls us to be His children. Do we use our time and talents to lead virtuous lives, so by our example, the world will know we are Christ’s disciples?
Gospel – Matthew 5:1-12 • To be good Christian stewards, we must strive to live the Beatitudes. As faithful stewards, we profess to follow Christ’s teaching to lose our lives completely in His service of others.
Stewardship Thought • Today’s psalm makes clear that we and everything we think we own actually belongs to God instead: “The Lord’s are the earth and its fullness, the world and those who live in it.” We are stewards, not owners, of our own lives and all we possess! See Psalm 24.

As a youth, Juan Alva, took the streetcar from Juarez across the Rio Grande to El Paso to go to school. His mother, a young widow, wanted her two sons to have a good education. Dr. Alva and his wife Elsa, from Argentina, joined St. Thomas More in 1977. Elsa remembered, “Everyone in our family had something to do at Mass. Our daughter Lux played guitar, the boys were altar servers, I was a Eucharistic Minister and Juan was a Lector.” Elsa ,&/1$7.&+$,-&'-21$-82$5',-$)2(29'&-/*+$of La Virgen de Guadalupe in the Gimghoul Road church. I remember the convivio we had with a potluck, and the celebration with Mexican music and native dancers in the basement of the old church.” Gladys also remembered when a Mass in Spanish was only offered once a month. A native of Peru, she would translate the readings, homilies and announcements into Spanish for a priest to "read." Gulny Sarelli Rossi recalled, “At the beginning it was only a small group of parishioners helping in Mass. We didn’t really have ministries; we just rotated who did the readings, who helped with Communion. I remember helping
translate homilies for Fr. Scott.” When Fr. Scott McCue became the Parochial Vicar in 2001 he was able to offered Mass in Spanish. He said, “I did a Spanish immersion program for 14 weeks after the college seminary (1996) in Cuernavaca, Mexico.”
On December 8, 2001, Guadalupita Ortiz and her husband came from Albuquerque, NM to attend the unveiling and dedication of her painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe in its permanent spiritual corner. Before beginning to paint she said she “researched and prayed for guidance.” In 2005 Marianne Kremer began to play the organ and direct the Coro Santa Cecilia with the help of Dina Castro continuing a coro initiated by Eusebio Gonzalez and Gulnara Trauco.
Maria Berna Villalobos assembled an early Altar of the Dead in narthex. Fr. Robert Kus explained the tradition in the NC Catholic, “The Altar de Muertos is a wonderful tool for teaching children about death and -82$&<-2'(/<2?$&+1$/-$/,$&$-2''/5)$=&3$-*$teach about the Feasts of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days. The symbolism is profound, for as Catholic Christians, death is not the end of the line, only a transition.”
The parish is now home to 1,425 families with Spanish as their primary language and their many ministries and traditions.

Samuel heard God’s voice in early youth; the good thief did not discover Jesus

Established in 1964 as part of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, St. Thomas More Catholic School has consistently combined rigorous academics with Christian moral and religious truths, creating a challenging and inspiring educational atmosphere. Led by an outstanding group of teachers and administrators working closely with the pastor, priests, and lay leaders of St. Thomas More Church, the school is energized by an emphasis on high academics, service, community and faith.
