The Mass in Slowest Motion: The First List of Saints The Roman Canon has two lists of saints. The first is

found in the Communicantes, which gives us a list of specific saints. So, who are these particular saints and why are they named?

The Communicantes list begins, as it should, with the greatest saint, the one of greater grace and sanctity than all other saints combined: the glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ. In any list or litany of saints she al-ways has pride of place, because from her comes the grace that sanctifies all saints.

Next comes blessed Joseph, her Spouse. This mention of Joseph is practically brand new, and is the only change made to the Roman Canon in fourteen centuries. In 1962, since the Church had grown in appreciation for and devotion to Joseph, Pope Saint John XXIII inserted his name into the Canon. It is fitting that as we approach the eternal Father, we also venerate the man whom Jesus called “Abba” in this world.

Then the Canon lists two sets of twelve saints. The first is somewhat predictable: the twelve Apostles: Peter and Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Jude. The number twelve derives its significance from the twelve sons of Jacob, or twelve tribes of Israel, that form the People of God. To signify a new covenant and a “new Israel” our Lord chooses twelve men to be the foundation of the Church.

The mention of Saint Paul gives us a clue that the prayer is Roman. In fairness, the twelve should really include Matthias (the replacement for Judas who, for obvious reasons, didn’t make the cut). It mentions Paul instead because, with Saint Peter, he is one of the principal patrons of Rome. Both men traveled to Rome and were martyred there under Emperor Nero. Therefore, they are mentioned here together.

The Canon then lists twelve saints as a complement to the twelve Apostles. These are saints either from Rome or for whom the church in Rome had a devotion. The first five were popes: Saints Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius. Cyprian was bishop of Carthage in Northern Africa. Lawrence was a deacon in Rome and assistant to Pope Sixtus. Chrysogonus is thought to have been the teacher of Anastasius. He was martyred in Northern Italy in the 3rd century and a devotion to him grew in Rome soon after. We know little about Saints John and Paul except that they were martyred in Rome in the 4th century. Again, devotion to them soon began in Rome, where there is now a church in their honor.

Saints Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers and also doctors. They bear the nickname The Silverless because they charged nothing for their medical services. Arrested in what is now Syria during the persecution of Diocletian (early 300’s), they were beheaded. Devotion to them soon spread throughout the Church and especially in Rome. Today a church stands in their honor near the Roman Forum and Coliseum.

The money will be used to replace the school’s existing Active Boards with new ActivPanels from Promethean. These boards will provide essential apps and teaching tools at the touch of a button. Whether our students are learning religion, social studies, or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), these new boards will enhance our teacher’s ability to teach and our student’s ability to learn through realistic and interactive audio-visual experiences. St. James Welcomes Don Carolina as Director of Music Please welcome Mr. Don Carolina, St. Jame’s new Director of Music. Don comes to us from the Aquinas Institute, the Catholic campus ministry of Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, where he served for over 20 years. Before his time at Princeton, he was the Director of Music and Organist at Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Rumson, NJ, where he conduct-ed the Adult and Children’s Choirs and led a con-cert series. Don has also served at Christ the King Lutheran Church, in his native Richmond, Virginia, and at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in New York City, where he directed the church’s Professional Choir and led a concert series. He also worked at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Basking Ridge, NJ, where he directed the Adult Choir and the Choir of Boys and Girls. “I could not be more excited to join your parish community as Director of Music! I want to thank Fr. Scalia for his warm welcome and offer a

heartfelt thanks to the search committee,” he said. “For me, as a pastoral musician, one of the most fulfilling experiences is leading the faithful in a robust singing of the Church’s song. I be-lieve music is an integral component of Liturgy, not just an optional add-on. St. James is very blessed to have had its worship raised to new heights, and I look forward to continuing that tradi-tion and carrying it even further.” Don studied organ and choral music at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, and orchestral conducting at Princeton University. As an organ accompanist, he has toured London, England; Germany, and Austria with the Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church Choir, East Brunswick, New Jersey), where the choir performed at the Tenth International Salzburg Choir Festival. Don was the sub-dean for the Central New Jersey Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and is currently a member of the Guild’s New York City chapter. Don is also a member of the Church Music Association of America. An antiquarian and avid tennis player, Don says when we can’t find him on campus, and he’s not “watching HGTV, you’ll probably find me at an antique boutique or on the tennis court.” Welcome Don!
