Despite what many say, the constitutional
separation of Church and State does not mean
that religion has no place in public life. It means
rather that the government must not favor any
particular religion: America has no "established
Church" sponsored by Uncle Sam.
In Europe, however, Church-State separation is not
quite as sharp. Some governments sponsor the
parochial schools, pay the clergy's salary and even
fund the construction of churches. Americans
struggling with school tuition and weary of special
collections and fundraising campaigns will surely
find such an arrangement appealing. Actually,
there is increasing support in America for
"vouchers", that is, public monies given to parents
to pay for private and/or religious schooling.
In the Gospel reading of today’s Mass, our Lord
does not tell us precisely what form the Church-
State relationship is to have. He simply instructs
His disciples to give to Caesar what is Caesar's and
to give God what is God's. Neither the anarchist
who opposes the State nor the totalitarian who
idolizes it will find in these words any justification
for their cause. A good Christian is a responsible
citizen. While it is constitutionally possible to set
up a wall of separation between Church and State,
it is not permissible for a Christian to excuse
himself from contributing to the common good of
society; nor may a Christian exclude his religion
from civil life.
Give to "Caesar" what is rightfully his: pay taxes,
vote honestly, defend one's country and obey the
laws of the land. St. Paul instructed Christians to
pray for those who bear the heavy burden of
authority, "that we may lead a quiet and
peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way".
Obeying the Apostle’s injunction, the Church
directs us to include prayers for both civil
and ecclesiastical authorities in the General
Intercessions of the Mass.
While Christ recognized the rights of government,
He also made clear that God, too, has rights. The
State does not have absolute power and
dominion. When authorities mandate something
contrary to the Gospel or to the fundamental
rights and dignity of persons, Christians are
morally obligated to disobey. Although our
Constitution does not expressly prohibit the
Church from receiving support from Uncle Sam,
we should still exercise vigilance. The State could
demand, for instance, that Catholic hospitals
provide abortion and sterilizations services as a
condition for continued assistance or that Catholic
schools teach "diversity appreciation" aimed at
legitimizing moral relativism. In such cases, the
Church would be compelled to defy the State and
suffer the losses.
Give to God what is His: our worship and
submission. Because the Church is the sign and
instrument of God's Kingdom, giving to God
requires supporting His Church. The Catholic who
cherishes the Faith is willing to give of his time and
talents because that is how to help the Church in
her mission.
Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is
God's. On the one hand, Christ's followers must
take civic responsibility seriously. On the other
hand, we must keep in mind that "here we have no
lasting city, but we seek the one that is to come".
Neither socialism nor capitalism or any other "ism"
can be equated with the Kingdom of God. As long
as we keep our dual citizenship in mind, God will
be glorified and "Caesar" will be blessed.

The sacred liturgy is at the center, at the heart of
the life of the church. It gives life to the church. It
builds up the mystical body of Christ. It manifests
the nature of the church. It empowers the church
to carry out her mission.
Jesus Christ saved all humanity by His suffering,
death, resurrection and ascension. He sent His
church to proclaim the good news and to
celebrate His sacred mysteries, principally through
the Holy Eucharist and the other sacraments
around which the entire liturgical life of the church
revolves.
The sacred liturgy is a work in which Christ
associates the church with Himself in giving
perfect praise to God and making people holy. In
the liturgy the church worships the Eternal Father
through Christ, with Christ and in Christ in the unity
of the Holy Spirit.
This ecclesial nature of every liturgical act is most
manifest in the eucharistic celebration, the Mass,
which is the supreme act of Christian worship. In
the preface and the solemn eucharistic prayer that
follows it, the church expressly commemorates
and recounts her union with Mary, the ever
Blessed Virgin and Mother of our Savior, the
angels, the apostles and the saints in their various
categories. The church still on pilgrimage on earth
is then mentioned: the pope, the bishop of the
diocese where the Mass is being celebrated and all
the bishops, clergy and faithful people, especially
those who are being prayed for specifically at that
Mass. Next comes the church suffering, the holy
souls in purgatory who await the intercessory
prayers of the church so that they may soon be
admitted of the beatific vision.
It is very instructive and comforting for us to pay
attention to the sacred words that the church uses
in her liturgy and realize more and more that we
are being associated with Christ and with the
entire church: the church triumphant in heaven, the
church militant on earth and the church suffering in
purgatory.
The parish Mass, especially the Sunday Mass, is
the highest liturgical celebration of the Christian
community within the reach of most people every
week. It should be greatly valued. The church
could not live without the liturgy, especially the
Holy Eucharist.
The primary direction of liturgical worship is
vertical. We want to adore God, praise Him and
thank Him. We want to celebrate the mysteries of
Christ our Savior. All participants in the liturgy
should watch out for and avoid temptations to
draw attention to oneself. The priest who
preaches, the choir that leads the singing and the
reader who proclaims a lesson should not attract
attention to themselves.
We come to Mass to adore God, not to entertain
one another. All forms of horizontalization, making
a show or amusing the congregation should be
avoided. For the same reason, it is not easy to
produce a dance that will respect the vertical
dimension of liturgical worship. The parish hall is
available after Mass for mutual entertainment.
The sacred liturgy sends us on mission: to share
the faith that we have celebrated, to bring the
good news of Christ to those who do not yet know
Him, to evangelize our families, workplaces,
politics, science and culture, and to show Christian
solidarity with the poor, the old, the sick and the
needy in general.

Mass Intentions for 2018
The Mass Intentions Book for 2018 will be available in the Rectory Office beginning next Tuesday, October 24.
If you wish to have masses said for the living or the deceased in your families or among your friends, you are invited to stop by the Rectory Office beginning Tuesday, from 8:30 AM to noon and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Endowment Sunday October is the month the parishioners of Epiphany usually recover from the wrath of Mother Nature, thank God, their children are back in school, watch the World Series, and contribute to the Epiphany School Endowment Fund which continues to assist Epiphany School to be competitive and be a school of excellence. However, this year Mother Nature dealt us a cruel hand. Hurricanes ravaged the Caribbean, especially Puerto Rico and the Islands, Texas and Florida, causing unimaginable devastation to families. Besides these catastrophes, an earthquake rocked Mexico City resulting in utter destruction. All of us are being asked to donate to many causes including the Hurricane Relief Fund, the Red Cross and the special collections of our Archdiocese to help the needy. Many people are hurting, including families and their relatives in Epiphany Parish. As a result, Monsignor O’Doherty did not send out Endowment letters to each family soliciting pledges, nor will he be making a special Appeal today on Endowment Sunday, October 22. Instead he prefers you take care of your family needs, including your relatives; and only if, after providing for your personal preference, you are able to still make a gift to Epiphany School Endowment Fund, envelopes are available in the pews for your gift today. But, remember, your family comes first.

OUR PARISH’S FORTY HOURS
I hope that our previous experience of the 40 Hours Devotion has enkindled in each of us a desire to grow spiritually and participate again in some aspect of Epiphany Church’s 40 Hours Devotion.
Following the opening Mass on November 5, at 6:00 pm, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed all day and night in the main church. The Blessed Sacrament cannot be left unattended when it is exposed. We are counting on our parishioners to devote an hour of adoration during the 40 hours of exposition.
The specific way that Jesus asks us to love him is to spend one quiet hour with Him in the Blessed Sacrament. We hope that you will not only commit to one hour of adoration, but that you will also attend many other events planned for the 40 hours –

DAILY MASS
Monday – Friday 6:30 AM & 8:00 AM
Twenty-five minutes with the Lord at the start of each day will make a big difference in your life.
A PRAYER FOR GUIDANCE
Lord Jesus, may everything I do begin with You,
continue with Your help, and be done under Your guidance.
May my sharing in the Mass free me from my sins,
and make me worthy of Your healing. May I grow in Your Love and Your service,
and become a pleasing offering to You; and with You to Your Father.
May the mystery I celebrate help me to reach eternal life with You.

“When for the love of God we share our goods with our neighbor in need,
We discover that the fullness of life comes from our love,
And all is returned to us: A blessing in the form of Peace, inner satisfaction and joy.”
Pope Benedict XVI
This year has presented us with several opportunities “to share our goods with our
neighbor in need.” We have helped the families who were affected by hurricanes
“Harvey, Irma and Maria” in many ways, but also with over $60,000.00 in donations.
Even though today is Endowment Sunday at Epiphany, we have not mounted
a full campaign or made a strong appeal this year. You know the reasons why.
Nevertheless, we thank those of you who have already sent in your pledges
and anyone who can and will do so today.
Because we so strongly believe in the “endowment” concept, as so many of our
parishioners also do, we did not want to discontinue it, but we know that this year
has been difficult, and your family needs come first. So we are grateful to those
who can make a pledge and understand those who cannot.
The generosity of our parishioners does not go unnoticed,
and the past, present and future generations of Epiphany School
students thank you for your care and vision.
