“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble”Psalm 46

For many, if not all of us, it is a very unsettling time, especially for those who are vulnerable. There is a lot of fake news out there which can scare anybody. Please make sure you listen to the advice of experts and use your common sense. In times of helplessness and fear the Psalmists reminds us that God is our refuge and our strength and our help in trouble. We are his hands and feet and are able through prayer to build up our resilience to fear and focus firmly on hope and take courage.

We must pray for all who need our prayers. From prayer follows action. Pray and ask God how we can best support each other in our community and beyond. Thank God! that through modern technology we can all stay in touch and can make things happen without passing on the virus. Pick up the phone and ring somebody who you think might need a conversation to ease the time of loneliness. The unknown brings its own stresses. Speaking with people can put things into perspective. Thinking of people in Care homes without access to a mobile phone and not being able to see their relatives is indeed an anxious time. Maybe it is the time to pick up the pen and get the dust of your writing paper. Some people are without internet access and can’t order food. If you can think of somebody who might need food delivered get in touch. If you are not sure, pick up the phone and ask. Please contact us on 01580891258 if we can help. All Saints church will be open for prayer and lighting candles.

I pray: May God bring reassurance to all who are worried for themselves or are worrying about others. Help us to keep in mind those more vulnerable than ourselves and to offer support and comfort for all who need it.For those feeling isolated and alone, may you receive God’s love in abundance and comfort from the prayer following:

Save us, O Lord, while wakingand guard us while sleeping,

that awake we may watch with Christand asleep may rest in peace.

Yours, Silke

Over the next three months we will be supporting Pancreatic Cancer UK. As our usual second Sunday of the month falls on Easter Sunday we will be having a speaker coming to talk to us on the 19th April. Well known in the village Kate Minett is a trained speaker and supporter of Pancreatic Cancer UK. Many of you will remember Dr Nigel Minett, a much loved local GP, husband of Kate, who sadly died from this disease. Please do come along to listen to Kate, and hear how you can support and help this Charity, on Sunday 19th April at the 10am service All Saints Church.

Kate writes :-

Cancer remains the leading cause of death in the UK. Scientific advances in the last 50 years have transformed the prospects of many sufferers. New treatments have become available and survival rates for many cancers have improved. Sadly those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have seen virtually no improvement in 50 years. A staggering statistic of which many of those who have not had direct involvement of this disease are unaware. Less than 7% of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive more than five years. 1 in 4 people don’t survive a month and 3 out of 4 people will not survive a year. After a few minor symptoms my husband Nigel Minett GP was diagnosed in October 2011 and died ten weeks later.Pancreatic Cancer UK is the only British charity which offer three streams of hope to those families affected. They provide information and support for those, newly diagnosed, on treatments available, clinical trials, managing symptoms, and end of life care. They also fund world class research (only 2% of the UK cancer research budget is directed towards pancreatic cancer each year). The charity is also involved in policy making and campaigning, urging the government to make pancreatic cancer a survivable disease.

Kate herself has become involved in fundraising, her last challenge was a tandem skydive from 19,000 in March. Kate was also works as a volunteer regional representative for the charity and looks forward to coming to speak to us all on the 19th April.

We were fortunate at the March Work Party to have a morning clear of rain. Volunteers carried out general maintenance cutting back brambles and keeping the pathways clear of growth. More land was cleared along the North fence in preparation for more hedge planting. There was a lot of litter to be picked up including an old drawer, pieces of timber and tin foil.

The water levels in the ponds were the highest we have ever known them with the water well over the tops of the yardsticks. The wet weather we have experienced this year hasn’t deterred the wild flowers: violets, cowslips, primroses, fritillaries and, of course, celandine were all in bloom. A pair of mallards appear to have taken up residence and one moorhen.

Our next Work Party will take place on Saturday, 4th April at 10am. New volunteers are always welcome to join us.

EASTER LILLIES

AnnouncementWith great sadness I am letting you know that Brian Barnes, former Rector of All Saints Church, has died. Brian died on Monday 2 March. He fought a second battle with lymphoma. He was much loved.

I met Brian seven years before I came to Staplehurst and enjoyed him and Una returning to Staplehurst on occasions when they combined their visits with seeing family in Kent. Brian and Una kept in touch with several people and he will be greatly missed. No doubt many already are, but may we all unite in keeping Brian’s family in our prayers at this difficult time for them.

Yours Silke

Next month’s magazine will include photos and memories of Brian’s time as Rector of All Saints.

Church isn’t Closing - it’s Changing

Worship at All Saints Church

The Church of England has advised that Public Worship should be suspended until further notice: there will be no Sunday services or Wednesday morning communion.

All Saints Church will remain open daily for private prayer. Advice on hygiene is prominent in the entrance porch, and handwashing facilities are available in the church toilet. If others are in the church at the same time as you, please maintain a safe distance.

A Daily Prayer booklet is downloadable from the All Saints website, is available in the church porch or can be delivered to your home if you contact the parish office.

We encourage you to use this to pray together, but from your own home. In the Rectory, Revd Silke Tetzlaff will be saying Morning Prayer at 9.30am on Tuesday – Friday and Sunday, and Evening Prayer at 5pm on Tuesday – Friday. Details of how to access streaming of this will be available very soon.

In all of this, we have three key aims:

Keeping people well Keeping people praying Keeping people connected

During the uncertain weeks ahead, please remember that you can ring or email:

Christian Aid Week 2020As hinted last month, this year will be different. You will receive an envelope

through your letterbox, but it will not be collected from you. Instead, you are invited to return it, with suitable donation, to a sealed bucket at one of three collection points around the village. Station Newsagents, Martins/McColls and All Saints Church. There may also be collection tins at other locations for donations of loose change.

The emphasis this year is on tackling climate change. Whilst parts of the country have suffered from devastating floods, parts of Africa are experiencing prolonged drought with all the problems that brings.

Please be as generous as you can afford during Christian Aid Week, 10-16 May

Staplehurst BELLRINGERS

At the time of writing activities around the globe are being cancelled as a precaution against the Coronavirus outbreak. Fortunately ringing is still continuing pretty much as normal, although for the past few weeks our ringers are being encouraged to use sanitising gel at the beginning and end of each ringing session.

Luckily the Maidstone District Striking Contests at Hunton went ahead as usual on Saturday 14th March, albeit with a much reduced entry. We were only able to enter one band in the method competition and one in the called changes section. I am pleased to report that this year we won the called changes competition, whilst the method band were runners-up to Boughton Monchelsea.

As reported in last month’s magazine the first handbell workshop was held on 22nd February and attracted around 24 people. There is clearly an interest in establishing a community handbell group and it is provisionally planned to hold practices on Saturday afternoons. However, these will not start until at least after Easter, and even then it will depend on the Coronavirus situation. Those whose details we have will be notified of developments.

For the moment we will be continuing to ring for the regular Sunday Services, and on our normal weekly Tuesday practice except on 7th April which is during Holy Week. However this might change at very short notice and intending visitors are advised to check with either myself on 01580-890247 or Tower Captain Sue Bassett on 01580-891917 to ascertain the up-to-date situation.

Staplehurst PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

The Photographic Society is now well through its current season We have had all our competitions with the exception of our ‘Annuals’ which will take place during April depending of course on the national ‘virus’ situation.

So far in the new year we have had a couple of talks by our own members Richard Briden & Dorril Polley. Richard’s talk was on ‘The Zone System’ as prescribed by Ansell Adams whilst Dorril’s was on her travels to Chile.

Our two major competitions The Presidents Cup for Projected Digital Images and The Chairman’s Cup for Prints were won by Brian Woods and Frank Page respectively.

At the time of writing, because of the ‘virus’ situation we have decided, like most clubs, to stop having meetings at least until 17th April, but we will keep this under review as the future is unclear and we will make re-starting decisions closer to the time.

Looking to the future, following the sucess of our ‘Colour Splash’ audio-visual evening when we raised nearly £300 for the ‘Friends of All Saints’, plans are well underway organising ‘Colour Splash 2’ scheduled for the 24th October 2020. Hope you can make it!

Frank Page. President SPS.

It will be very similar to ones we have held previously, so do let us know if you would like to come. Everyone welcome, but it will be entry by ticket only. WI LINES...We had a fascinating talk on

“The Flowers of India” by Dr Jay Mahadevan at our March meeting.

Darts practise continues at the Kings Head each Monday afternoon at 3.30pm. We are no longer in the WI competition as we don’t have enough points but practise is fun anyway! Bowling went ahead with 2 teams after last month’s illness break. There will be no bowling in April as it is school holidays. Hopefully we will be able to go in May.

We had a new venue for our lunch. It was The Ridge Golf Club and very successful it was too!

A few of us went to the Annual Meeting in Tunbridge Wells on another appalling day for rain. We had a very interesting day and came away with 3 prizes for Staplehurst WI for Denman College residential courses in Oxfordshire.

Our speaker for April will be David Chandler accompanied by his gorgeous dog talking about Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Memories of Brian Barnes

For the May edition of the Parish Magazine, we would like to gather memories and appreciations of Revd Brian Barnes to put into an article. Please email your

contribution or arrange for me to collect, if it is handwritten, by April 5th. I am sure you will understand that due to space not

HORTICULTURAL Society

Unfortunatley I was unable to attend the March meeting so have not a lot to write about it. I understand that many hints and tips were given on how to get the best from daffs on the show bench also the best varieties to grow for good results.

The April talk is entitled “how to commit the perfect murder”. Intriguing !

Saturday the 2nd of May is our annual plant sale. North Hall Community Centre.

Monthly meeting on 19th May is about companion planting and will be given by Katherine Lynn.

A small group of members attended a coffee morning at Sandra’s house and were given a demonstration of flower arranging by Marian Christie. She did four arrangements each one taking its title from the classes in the Spring show. ‘Shades of Yellow’, ‘A Love Song’, ‘for an Easter table’ and ‘an arrangement in a cup and saucer’. We were given many useful tips. No split leaves or damaged flowers

(points deducted). Make sure the foliage is turgid, place flowers on different levels, white lifts an arrangement, foliage is greedier for water than the flowers. Stand back to see that the arrangement is in proportion and balanced. Check that you have not exceeded the size stated. Check and check again. Marian made it look so easy but I am sure it was not. We hope to have more exhibits in this category as there have been very few in the past, at least one or two from all at the demonstration would boost the number of entries. The show is on the 28th March so will let you know next month if the objective was achieved. Thank you Marian it was a joy to watch your expertise. Thank you Sandra for your hospitality.

Come and join us on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 8pm. South hall Community Centre. Refreshments served, raffle drawn plus a friendly welcome. Not forgetting the monthly flower competition.

Hints for April.

Complete outstanding pruning of roses as soon as possible. Divide large clumps of old herbaceous plants. Michaelmas daisies benefit from this. Cut asparagus from beds at least two years old when the growth is 4 -6 inches long. Use a sharp knife cutting 2 – 3inches below the soil. Go over the bed two or three times each week. Mulch herbaceous boarders, making sure the ground is wet before applying. Blackbirds love kicking it all over paths making one more job to do! Examine house plants. Wash dust off leaves. Feed and increase water. Check for bugs.

Staplehurst LIBRARY GROUP

READING GROUP REVIEW ‘Little Women’ by Louisa May Alcott

Originally published as two separate books. ‘Little Women’ and ‘Good Wives’, their combination into one volume requested by the author’s publisher was printed in 1868 under the former title and published to supplement her family income, her many short stories appearing in local magazines and newspapers. She had originally travelled to Georgetown to work as a nurse, contracted typhoid and on recovery returned home to care for her younger siblings which provided a background to what eventually emerged as ‘Little Women’, adapted through the years for stage, screen and DVD, to qualify as a literature classic.

The style of writing,

acceptable by the social mores of the mid-1800’s, follows up each character’s dialogue with irksome moralising qualifications. As an example ‘ Never mind; little girls shouldn’t ask questions’ returned Jo, sharply. Now if there is anything mortifying to our feelings when we are young, it is to be told that; and to be bidden to ‘run away dera’ still more trying to us ‘.

Different characters emerge to join those of Mrs. March mother of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy and their servant Hannah. Neighbours, Theodore Laurence and his rich grandfather the nearest geographically with others further away, their relationships socially intertwined serving to define the

culture of the area which was dependent on slave labour.

The family March, originally wealthy, were plunged into poverty when March unwisely made a large loan to a friend which was lost. Too old to be drafted into the Army he volunteers as an Army Chaplin instead, leaving the family to fend for themselves Mrs. March concentrating her energies on the Soldiers’ Aid Society for a pittance, Meg aged 16 working as a nursery governess, and 15 years old Jo a paid companion to windowed Aunt March financing the household whilst Beth, too shy to attend school and being taught by her father until he departed, subsequently helping their servant Hannah in her daily tasks

This review is an unedited submission

with Amy the youngest attending school, covering her slate with art work instead of sums and writing to declare that ‘when Papa was rich we did so & so . . . ‘ which enamoured her to no one.

The story , beginning with Christmas, labours through the seasons with their attendant effects on the interactions within the immediate March family linking with those of their neighbours through imposed political social changes, concluding the following Christmas. At this stage an

awareness creeps in that although the novel supposedly involves the political issue of the period, that of the pros & cons of slavery, not a single reference to the African slaves whose welfare was supposedly the purpose of the novel is made.

Several of the Reading Group, having read the book as children, now thought it out of date, sickly sweet and not ringing true, though one thought it magical it was generally agreed that it is hard to judge by today’s standards, the Group’s final judgement ranging

between one and four stars. The next meeting will be at

2pm on Wednesday 1st April 2020 when the book to be discussed will be ‘Noughts & Crosses’ by Malorie Blackman. See you there.

Jeannette Whitford.

CARERS AND VULNERABLE ADULTS

Just to remind you that, in the right hand side of the church (by the charity notice board) is a basket containing useful information. Please take any you may find helpful. There are identification forms to be filled in, should a confused person go missing. The Police and Kent Search and Rescue find these forms very helpful at what is a

stressful time for relatives and carers. There are leaflets for those people who feel anxious or vulnerable, or suffering physical or mental abuse, with

telephone numbers for people or organisations who can help you.

Please do look at them and use them.

Would you rather walk a mile, jump a stile or eat a country pancake in a field? Growing up on a farm in Marden, that was one of the questions we liked to ask visiting friends, hoping that they would opt for the pancake, at which point we would explain, with much glee, that they had chosen to eat a cow pat!

A Wealden Childhood

This was a traditional Wealden mixed farm, which meant that we had hops, fruit, livestock and arable. We also had woodland and a river frontage which gave great exploring

opportunities, once we were old enough. Even the large garden had neglected, unexplored areas, which were great for games and imagination. I remember a great time one summer playing aeroplanes, having created our own plane out of old boxes and other junk we had found at the back of the summer house.

The livestock meant hard work, for the grown ups, but fascination for us children. My older sister could remember the farm horses in use, but they were replaced by tractors while I was still too young to

remember them. We had sheep, and I can still feel the tug on the feeding bottle of a sock lamb that I was entrusted with looking after when I was 7. I was thrilled by this, and called the lamb, with amazing originality, “Lambie”. It was not long before it was reintegrated back into the flock, and I don’t remember regretting this; moreover, it hasn’t stopped me from enjoying to eat lamb!

We had chickens for eggs and eating. I don’t think I can have been a sensitive child, because I was fascinated to watch the dead chickens being plucked and gutted. I particularly

enjoyed the scent of the pin feathers being singed off with a match. We also kept turkeys one year. They were allowed to run free range in the part of the field that had our washing line, and Mum suddenly found that all of her cotton dresses had little holes along their hems, where the turkeys had been pecking them! We didn’t keep turkeys again.

Our cousins lived on similar farms in neighbouring parishes, so one of our annual set piece events would be the Good Friday picnic. Each family would take a turn to host this, in their woods. We would be equipped with flasks of tea, and suitable eatables. It could be very cold, so we would be swaddled in winter coats, scarves and hats.

We kids, inevitably, didn’t mind the cold too much, but we were given a very particular job to do, before we were allowed to enjoy our tea. We had to pick bunches of primroses so that, on Easter Saturday,

our mothers would have them to decorate their respective Churches. We also managed some good fun and hilarity, woodlands are wonderful areas to play in, so we went home happy – our mothers with the flowers, and us kids full of beans. Happy Easter!

STAPLEHURST SCOUTS

We always try to give our Scouts a full, varied & fun programme every term. With this in mind, we took part in 3 activities recently, which we hadn’t tried before.

1st Staplehurst

As part of their Astronautics Activity badge, the Scouts were tasked with building rockets. They were a simple design, using a foam cone & a simple rocket motor. We made a launch pad, had a remote control launch button & ........ nothing! After a quick troubleshoot & a rewire, the first rocket launched. The small rocket motors used, achieved an altitude of about 50ft &, as we launched in the dark, looked amazing. Rockets successfully launched, so there’s only one thing to do. Make bigger rockets! TBC.

Next was the Chip Shop Challenge. A recognised Scouting activity, where the Scouts put together a check list of criteria for judging local providers. Categories included friendliness of service, waiting time, taste of chips, crispness, size of portion, appearance of premises etc. Thanks go out to the Fish & Chip Shop, Zen Wok, Happy Valley & Staplehurst Kebab shop, who all joined in with great humour to make it a fun activity. The Winner? I’m not saying.

Most recently, we had a Group trip to visit the fantastic Imperial War Museum at Duxford, as part of our 75th Anniversary of VE Day Commemorations. We joined the Beavers & Cubs for a great day out, going on board Concorde (which none of them had seen flying), experienced a flight simulator & saw a huge variety of aircraft with a view to obtaining their Air Activity badge. We even got them to recreate a famous ‘scramble’ photograph. An amazing day out.

STAPLEHURST SCHOOL

On Thursday 5th March, Staplehurst School took part in a vocabulary parade as part of World Book Day.  All the children and staff came dressed as a word and we created class dictionaries for the children to use in their writing. In the afternoon, we held a whole school parade, where all the children got to show off their

amazing costumes and inspired word choices. Winners were chosen from across the school. These were snowball, geology, refuse and gluttony but other amazing words on show included monochrome, precipitation, dismal, vibrant, nostalgic and many others. It was a fantastic day!
