What Cheer?William Walton (1 902-1 983)

What cheer? What cheer? Good cheer! Good Cheer!Be merry and glad this good New Year.

Lift up your hearts and be glad!In Christ’s birth the angel bade;Say each to other, if any be sad:What cheer? What cheer? What cheer! What Cheer!

Now the King of heaven His birth hath take,Joy and mirth we ought to make!Say each to other, for his sake:What cheer? What cheer? What cheer! What Cheer!

I tell you all with heart so free,Right welcome ye be to me.Be glad and merry for charity!What cheer? What cheer? Good cheer! Good Cheer!

Be merry and glad this good New Year.

- English Carol

Then was I born of a virgin pure,Of her I took fleshly substanceThus was I knit to man’s natureTo call my true love to my dance.

In a manger laid, and wrapped I wasSo very poor, this was my chanceBetween an ox and a silly poor assTo call my true love to my dance.

A Spotless Rose is growing,Sprung from a tender root,Of ancient seers’ foreshowing,Of Jesse promised fruit;Its fairest bud unfolds to lightAmid the cold, cold winter,And in the dark midnight.

The Rose which I am singing,Whereof Isaiah said,Is from its sweet root springingIn Mary, purest Maid;Through God’s great love and mightThe Blessed Babe she bare usIn a cold, cold winter’s night.

- Anonymous, translation by Catherine Winkworth (1 827 - 1 878)

Bogoroditse DjevoArvo Pärt (b. 1 935)

Today Christ is born:Nowell! Nowell!Today the Savior appeared:Today on Earth the Angels sing, Archangels rejoice:Today the righteous rejoice, saying: Glory to God in the highest.

Tis Winter Nowarr. Paul Halley (b. 1 952)

Tis winter now; the fallen snowHas left the heav’ns all coldly clear;Through leafless boughs the sharp

winds blow,And all the earth lies dead and drear.

And yet God’s love is not withdrawn;His life within the keen air breathes,His beauty paints the crimson dawn,

And clothes the boughs with glitt’ring wreaths.

And though abroad the sharp winds blow,

And skies are chill, and frosts are keen,Home closer draws her circle now,

And warmer glows her light within.

O God! who giv’st the winter’s coldAs well as summer’s joyous rays,

Us warmly in Thy love enfoldAnd keep us through life’s wintry days.

- Samuel Longfellow (1 819-1 892)

Refrain:Nowell sing we, both all and some

For Rex pacificus is come.

In Bethlem, in that fair city,A Child was born of a maiden free,

That shall a lord and prince be, A solis ortus cardine.

Children were slain full great plenty,Jesu, for the love of Thee;

Wherefore their soules saved be, Hostis Herodes impie.

As sunne shineth through the glass,So Jesu in his mother was;

Thee to serve now grant us grace. O lux beata Trinitas!

Now God is comen to worshipen us,Now of Mary is born Jesus;

Make we merry amonges us, Exultet celum laudibus!

- English Carol

In the Bleak Midwinterarr. Abbie Betinis (b. 1 980)Solo: Charity Butterfield, Mezzo-SopranoDuet: Clarisse Colao, Soprano; Ann Powell, Mezzo-SopranoPiano: Jared Pierce

In the bleak mid-winterFrosty wind made moan,Earth stood hard as iron,Water like a stone;Snow had fallen, snow on snow,Snow on snow,In the bleak mid-winterLong ago.

Christ a homeless strangerSo the gospels say,Cradled in a mangerAnd a bed of hay;In the bleak mid-winter,A stable place sufficed,Mary and her baby,Jesus Christ.

- Christina Rossetti (1 830-1 894), John Andrew Storey (1 935-1 997), and Abbie Betinis

Angels and archangelsMay have thronged the air,Shepherds, beasts and wise men,May have gathered there,But only His motherIn her tender blissBlessed this new redeemerWith a kiss.

What can I give Him,Poor as I am?If I were a shepherdI would bring a lamb;If I were a wise manI would do my part;Yet what I can, I give Him -Give my heart.

I Saw Three Shipsarr. Wolfram Buchenberg (b. 1 962)Baritone: Stephen Pace

I saw three ships come sailing inOn Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;I saw three ships come sailing inOn Christmas Day in the morning.

O they sailed into Bethlehem,On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;O they sailed into Bethlehem,On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the bells on earth shall ring,On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;And all the bells on earth shall ring,On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the souls on earth shall sing,On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;And all the souls on earth shall sing,On Christmas Day in the morning.

Then let us all rejoice amain,On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;Then let us all rejoice again,On Christmas Day in the morning.

Go Tell It On the Mountainarr. Steven BarnettMezzo-soprano: Charity ButterfieldSoprano: Julie Barker

While shepherds kept their watchingO’er silent flocks by night,Behold, throughout the heavensThere shone a holy light.

Refrain:Go, tell it on the mountain,Over the hills and everywhere.Go, tell it on the mountain,That Jesus Christ is born.

The shepherds feared and trembledWhen lo, above the earthRang out the angel chorusThat hailed our Savior’s birth.

Down in a lowly mangerThe humble Christ was born,And God sent us salvationThat blessed Christmas morn.

- John W. Work (1 901-1 967)

O magnum mysterium,et admirabile sacramentum,

ut animalia viderentDominum natum,

jacentem in praesepio!Beata Virgo, cujus viscera

meruerunt portareDominum Christum.

O great mystery,and wonderful sacrament,that animals should seethe new-born Lord,lying in a manger!Blessed is the Virgin whose wombwas worthy to bearChrist the Lord.
