If you were born before 1994 you probably remember

The Sun TheatreYou would have to be born before 1930 to remember the silent films thatwere shown there.Harold Kortes, a Greenville, Michigan native, was bitten by the movie bug and

searched throughout Michigan to find a suitable location for his new movie theater.He settled on Plainwell, Michigan.The theater was constructed and opened on April 26, 1927 showing its first silent

film, “Sweet Rosie O’Grady.” Harold’s wife, Edna, who was an accomplished pianist,accompanied all of the silent films. The theater featured a live vaudeville act in 1927but in March 1930 showed its last silent movie. The theater was remodeled threetimes, in 1937, in 1940 and in 1965.In 1929 at Christmastime, the Kortes had Christmas parties for children under 12 and continued until the Christmas

of 1993, their final year. Harold’s son, Stacey, was discharged from the military service in 1945 and joined his fatherin the movie business. In 1948 Stacey and his wife, Lucille, began managing the Theater on a full-time basis.Four generations were involved in the operation of the theater: Harold and Edna Kortes, Stacey and Lucille Kortes

along with their two girls Sharon and Barb. At the time of the closing, grandsons Chris and Nathan Bevins wereworking for their grandparents. For 67 years the theater was in operation until the “Sun Set” on June 12, 1994.

Melvin R. Harding was the founder of Hard-ing’s Friendly Markets. He opened the firstHarding’s Market in downtown Parchment,Michigan in 1944. The first Harding’s FriendlyMarket, though modest by today’s standards(approximately 7,500 square feet), proved tobe the beginning of a chain of stores now

serving Southwest Michigan and Northern In-diana. Some of the early pioneers in the de-velopment of Harding’s Friendly Marketsinclude Herb Corum, Roscoe Hill, Dutch Spier-ling, Millie Ponds, Dave Kauffman and LeeMiller; many of these names are recognizable

due to the fact that their sons, daughters andgrandchildren are still involved in the owner-ship and operation today. On February 5, 1948, Melvin Harding andRoscoe Hill formed Harding and Hill, Inc. andopened a store in downtown Plainwell. In1950 the Corporation added a second storein downtown Otsego. The store was remod-

eled many times over the ensuing years. InJuly of 1993, a new 34,666 square foot re-placement store was constructed in down-town Otsego. The store underwent anexpansion in 1999 to its current size of 38,000square feet. Today there are currently 28 Harding’sFriendly Markets, owned by various families.

Leon ‘Mort’ ‘Lovey’ HOLMESAGE 87 – OTSEGO, MI

Leon passedaway peace-fully Saturday,September 13,2014 at hishome in Otsego. Leonwas born July 1, 1927 in

Otsego to Waldo and Mary Agnes (Kor-tokrax) Holmes. Leon served his countryin the Army during WW II. He is survivedby his longtime companion Sally Hendrix-son; 6 children, Dan (Connie) Holmes ofKalamazoo, Joe (Cindy) Holmes of Plain-well, Jeff Holmes of Ludington, Rob(Frances) Holmes of Arcadia, PamHolmes of Gobles, Angela (Rick) McKe-own of Gobles; 18 grandchildren and 21great grandchildren. He was preceded indeath by his wife Joan, daughter Teresa,grandson Shawn and his sister CarolynLawrence. Leon’s love of automobiles ledto a lifetime career as an auto mechanic.He owned Morton’s Garage in Kalamazoofor over 30 years. He was an avid bowler,bowling a 300 game at age 72. Leon en-joyed boating, water skiing and fixinganything. He loved good food and mostof all he cherished his family. His greatsense of humor touched the lives ofeveryone he knew. A Funeral Mass washeld September 17, 2014 at St. Mar-garet’s Catholic Church, Otsego with Rev.Fr. Ted Martin officiating. Burial followedat St. Margaret’s Catholic Cemetery. Inlieu of flowers contributions in memory ofLeon may be made to Wings of HopeHospice or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Bonnie L. GRAYAGE 72 – WAYLAND, MI

Bonnie L. Gray of Way-land passed away Tues-day, September 16, 2014in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Graywas born February 17,1942 in Allegan to Robertand Dorothy (Kortba)

Wicks and was a lifelong resident of thearea. Bonnie was a homemaker who en-joyed her cats, trips to the casino, readingand watching soap operas. On October25, 1958 in Plainwell she married WilliamGray, who survives. Also surviving aretheir son, William Dale Gray of Kalama-zoo; two brothers, Herb (Bobbie) Wicksand Doug (Marge) Wicks, both of Plain-well; several nieces and nephews. Bonniewas preceded in death by her parents. Ather request cremation and a private familygraveside have taken place. Contribu-tions in memory of Bonnie may be madeto the West Michigan Cancer Center.

Bruce passed away Thursday,September 11, 2014 in Kalama-zoo. Mr. Baeuerle was born Oc-tober 1, 1935 in Chillicothe, OHto Louis and Helen (Magneson)Baeuerle. Bruce served his country in theArmy during the Korean Conflict. Heworked as an independent contractordoing remodeling and repairs. He couldfix anything. He is survived by his wife Vir-ginia (Walters) who he married on Novem-ber 15, 1968 then remarried on November15, 1986. Also surviving are his children,Tim (Michele) Overhuel, John (Debra)Overhuel, Steve (Pam) Overhuel, Christineand Alan – his children from a previousmarriage; 2 grandchildren, Mark andMelissa; and his dog Mac. He was pre-ceded in death by his parents, a stepdaughter Julie Ann White and her chil-dren, Michael and Lisa and a step sonMark. According to his wishes cremationhas taken place. Burial of ashes will takeplace at Mountain Home Cemetery, Ot-sego at a later date. Contributions inmemory of Bruce may be made to theASPCA.

Diane K. SHAFFAGE 68 – PLAINWELL, MI

Diane went home to bewith her Lord and SaviorJesus Christ on theevening of Sept. 10,2014. She passed awayin peace surrounded byher husband and her twosons by her side. As theysaid goodbye, the Lord

welcomed her home. She was born on April22, 1946 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo,MI to Frank and Bertha Hayward, joining alarge family of brothers and sisters. Dianewas brought up and lived in Comstock, MIwhere she met her husband, AJ Shaff, alsoof Comstock, MI. On Aug. 2, 1969 they weremarried and stayed together for 45 years,welcoming two boys, Andrew and Brian totheir family. She and her husband AJ weremarried at, and baptized the two boys atCalvary Christian Reformed Church of Plain-well, MI where they were long time mem-bers. They eventually joined FriendshipWesleyan Church of Plainwell, MI wherethey continued their Christian faith and wor-ship. A devoted Christian, wife, mother, andproud grandmother, her strong faith in theLord helped her and her family through sixbouts with cancer; beating the odds everytime. Her working years consisted of officework in the area, and maintaining a lovinghome for her family. She enjoyed the pre-cious time she had on this earth, reading herBible, books, loving, laughing, spendingtime the the family, and her cherishedgrandchildren that God blessed her with.She will be dearly missed by her husbandAJ, sons Andrew and Brian, her two daugh-ters-in-law Cindy and Tricia, her grandchil-dren Vaughn, Logan, Anthony, fraternaltwins Caleb and Abigail, two sisters, DeeLumbard and Marge Bowling, and manymore family and friends. She was precededin death by her parents Frank and BerthaHayward, her sister Sally, brothers Frank Jr.,Don, and Robert. Diane's final wishes wereto be cremated following her passing. Kathy passed away Tues-day, September 9, 2014 inAllegan. She was born Oc-tober 16, 1952 in Hunting-ton, IN to Lewis andKathryn (Schenkel) Hart.

Kathy was a very spiritual person and herfaith was uplifting for her and her family. Inher leisure time she loved flowers and trav-eling to the Upper Peninsula and MackinacIsland. She was a devoted homemaker andloved her family and especially loved spend-ing time with her grandchildren. On January5, 1974 in Marion, IN she married Ross“Bryan” Salyer, who survives. Also survivingare three sons, Derek (Crystal) Salyer ofLeonidas, Cory (Shea) Salyer of Kalamazooand Sean (Aryanna) Salyer of Fortuna, CA;four grandchildren, Ashley, Brett, Erin andRachel; her mother, Kathryn Hart of N. Man-chester, IN; and a brother, Richard Hart ofFort Wayne, IN. She was preceded in deathby her father in 2005 and her brother, LarryHart, in 1977. Cremation has taken place.
