Wow!
We rose up to a challenge! Just look at Rafferty, and you will know that something happened. Last Sunday we gave $230,000 + 3 marbles which will be matched and matched again to become $690,000! Wonder how God will use it? Pray that it be used powerfully for the growth of the church.
Our matching donor in Tennessee was moved to laughter and tears, and stated, “I have a problem.” He requested two things: (1) don’t use their names in connection with the gift, and (2) pray for him and his wife that God bless them with hearts of generos‐ity. They will do all they can to bless Canyon and are almost giddy with excitement over a church that is so ready and willing to step up to a challenge for the glory of God.
The climax to the day, for me, was after our Connection Group. It was a powerful meeting—during which Renee Stennes mentioned looking forward to being baptized at some point. (She had come through the Canyon Discovery class and had been thinking about what she needed to do to follow Christ.) Jane Tilkey looked at her and said, “What’s stopping you?” Then, pointing to me said, “He’ll be free in about an hour.”
After the meeting we called the Petrillis and made our way over to their pool where Renee was baptized into Christ for the remission of sins by Gary Barker and me. The angels in heaven rejoiced—with us!
Guests, we are glad you are here today. I look forward to meeting you and seeing why our paths have crossed on this beautiful day. You have probably noticed that at Canyon we love people—especially our little ones! During the assembly, we dismiss the children ages 3 thru 2nd grade to Children's Bible Hour, and we have an attended nursery for our littlest atten‐dees.
Also, we invite our guests to join one of our Connection Groups that meet in homes. This is a great way to make some new friends and learn more about God and about the Canyon Church of Christ. Just see me on the way out, and I will connect you with a group near your home. One more thing. Do this: pray about making Canyon your church home. We are people woven together through praising, loving, and reaching!

I saw a post on Facebook recently in which the author said something like, “How can I believe in a God when I cannot see Him?” Okay, that’s a fair question. Please allow me to offer a reasonable answer. Have you ever seen the wind? Now really, I mean have you ever actually seen wind? I don’t think so. You’ve seen the dust it picks up in our Arizona desert. You’ve seen the branches of trees rustle because of wind. You’ve felt the wind in your hair and smelled the sweet scent of rain it brings. You’ve heard the music of the chimes it plays. You have never actually seen wind, but do you believe in it? Of course you do. You’ve observed the evidence of it.
God did a beautiful thing with the Hebrew language. In Hebrew, the same word is used for wind, breath, and spirit. The word is ruach. In the conversation Jesus had with Nicodemus, He said, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit” (John 3:8). I love that! I have not yet seen the face of God. But like the wind, I have observed the evidence of the Spirit! I have seen the Spirit pick up ideas like dust particles and whirl them around until they form something powerful. I have seen souls rustle like tree branches as the Spirit moves through them. I have felt the Spirit move around me like a refreshing breeze. I have heard the music the Spirit inspires. And where is the Spirit going? “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.” I don’t know where we are being propelled, but I believe we are going somewhere amazing, somewhere important, somewhere surprising. And it’s not because we are so clever, but by His grace and for His glory, the Spirit is moving among us.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen” (Ephesians 3:20‐21). Did you enjoy last Sunday? Can you feel the Spirit moving? We can’t even imagine what happens next!
