We will conduct daily screening of campers and staff to include taking temperatures at the beginning of each day, andmonitoring campers and staff throughout the day.We will require staff and campers to wear masks during times when social distancing is not possible, and while in thepublic spaces of the Jewish Community Campus, (public hallways, lobby area, restrooms). Campers and staff may bringtheir own mask or The J will provide a disposable mask. Our small groups of campers with staff, will stay together during the day. They will socially distance themselves fromeach other as much as possible. When socially distancing is not possible staff and/or campers will wear masks, depending on the activity and the circumstances. We will not be able to play traditional games of contact sports such as basketball, football and soccer. Creativeadaptations of games will allow for social distancing, competition, and fun!Campers will swim in smaller groups, keeping their distance, for shorter periods of time. The Pool is scheduled to beavailable for J Camp beginning June 8. In addition, campers will use the pool when it is closed to the general public. We will add extra breaks for hand washing throughout the day and increase the frequency of cleaning and sanitation ofcontact surfaces in all areas where campers and staff will be participating in activities. We will be eating lunch with smaller groups of campers and staff. Campers who bring their lunch will need to bring alunch that does not need refrigeration and will stay with their backpack. We cancelled activities based on recommendations from the Department of Health and Environment or that would bedifficult to provide with the new guidelines, such as field trips and Undernights. We are creatively working to determine how traditional J Camp activities can be done within the new guidelines.Based on the new guideline, we discourage children from attending J Camp who have severe underlying medicalissues such as moderate to severe asthma or diabetes.

Early and Late Care are not possible without exposing campers to multiple groups of campers. We have cancelled Earlyand Late Care for this summer. Ma’asim Tovim Camp includes daily community service and recreation at a variety of locations, which requires dailytransportation. We are cancelled Ma’asim Tovim for this summer. Field Trips are not possible without exposing campers to multiple groups of campers and additional people at the fieldtrip location. In addition, it will be difficult to maintain distancing during transportation. Swim lessons are difficult to provide while socially distancing. Undernights are a large group activity, which would be difficult to do in small, independent groups.

Based on the guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and the Kansas Department of Health andthe Environment we currently plan to implement the following practices for this summer:

Camp ActivitiesJ Camp is designed to be active, fun, and challenging. Exciting summer activities include swimming, sports, nature, drama, crafts, archery, Israeli culture, cookouts, and special events. There are some activities which require safety procedures.Safety is our main priority. Staff are trained for appropriate safety rules and regulations. Below are examples of safetyprecautions for Camp activities.

Swimming: The outdoor swimming pool is a popular place at J Camp! Campers are scheduled to participate inrecreational swimming at the outdoor pool (weather and schedule permitting) each day. Staff will go over the pool ruleswith Campers and be sure that sunscreen is applied. Lifeguards are on duty and J Camp Staff are at the pool to helpsupervise the campers. The campers will swim with their small groups in designated areas of the pool.

Swim Lessons: Swim lessons have been cancelled this summer, due to the difficulty of children distancing from theinstructor and from each other during swim lessons.

Campers will change into swim suits and apply sunscreen prior to going to the pool. Swim shirts are encouraged. Staff go over pool rules with Campers and take Campers to the outdoor pool.Lifeguards are on duty and J Camp Staff are at the pool to help supervise Campers.Lifeguards are stationed around the pool deck. J Camp Staff provides additional supervision of Campers.Campers must wear a life jacket, unless they pass a swim test. Campers must pass the test each summer. See theinformation in the next section for information about the swim test. Lifeguards are on duty according to the ration determined by The J Aquatic policies.

Swimming Safety Precautions

Free Swim: Generally, each J Camp group has recreational swimming each day, (weather and schedule permitting). Inorder to provide an additional layer of safety, each group will take a swim test to identify if Campers will be required toswim with a life jacket. The swim test was developed by the Aquatic Staff and will be monitored by J Camp Staff. To passthe swim test, Campers must be able to: jump into the 6-foot end of the pool, submerge fully and return to the surface andbegin swimming without pushing off the wall. Then, swim 25 meters in a horizontal position, on stomach and on top of thewater. Then, exit the pool without assistance of the wall or pool ladder. Those Campers that pass the test will receive anorange wristband. Those not passing the test will be required to wear a life jacket during free swim.

Sports Safety Precautions: For activities such as kickball, field games, tag, playground games, soccer, softball, basketball, flag football, archery, and GaGa safety rules and guidelines have been developed. Campers are divided by ageand ability during sports instructional and free play times. Generally there is no more than a two-grade spread whenCampers play together during contact sports, depending on the sport and the ability levels of the players. Counselors aretrained regarding rules and safety issues of the various games and sports activities. During instructional sport times, agesmay be varied on a field but will remain consistent within each sub-group. Counselors are placed strategically so thatplaying and behavior remain in control. Counselors are trained to watch for potential safety concerns that may be presentduring a game. Archery is supervised by a certified archery instructor. Campers learn safety rules before participating. Trained staff instructCampers following established safety regulations and appropriate instruction tailored to the age, ability level and specialneeds of the participants.

Camper Expectations: We want Campers to enjoy their time at J Camp! Counselors will go over rules and procedures withCampers...

Campers are expected to follow the rules of the program and obey the direction of the Camp Staff. Acceptance into J Camp isconditioned on appropriate Camper behavior. A serious disciplinary problem is defined as one in which a child is hampering thesmooth flow of the Day Camp program by either requiring constant one-on-one attention; is inflicting physical or emotional harmon other children; is abusing staff or is otherwise unable to conform to the rules and guidelines of J Camp and The JewishCommunity Center. If a child is not able to adjust, the Discipline and Discharge policy will be implemented. If a child becomes aserious discipline problem, Staff will notify the parents of the situation, and discuss a solution. If improvement does not occur, or asolution cannot be determined, the Staff may recommend that a child be dismissed from the program. The Staff will discuss thedismissal procedure with the parents, should a serious discipline problem occur. However, acceptance into the program isconditioned on appropriate behavior and J Camp Staff reserve the right to dismiss a child from the program. For serious disciplineproblems, J Camp Staff may immediately dismiss a child from the program.

Camper Expectations & Behavior

We talk with Campers about rules at the beginning of each Camp session. We compliment, encourage, and praise appropriate behavior. We display positive behavior ourselves. We use suggestions or redirection. We hold quiet, brief, and private talks with Campers to address behaviors. We problem solve with Campers. We remove Campers from problem areas. We separate Campers. We give appropriate choices: "You may share the ball or wait out until the next inning starts."

Behavior Management: Our program is based on mutual respect being shared between Staff and Campers. While all Campersare valued as individuals with unique qualities and needs, they will be required to interact appropriately while attending J Camp.Behavior management is essential to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all Campers, helping children feel secure at the sametime it builds self-control and self-esteem. The objective of discipline and behavior management is to promote behaviors that arebeneficial to the child's development and welfare and to change and/or eliminate behaviors that are harmful or distressing to thechild or others. Camp Staff are trained to use the following techniques:

It is the policy of J Camp not to use physical punishment, threats, prolonged isolation, denial of food, or derogatory remarks. Staffare trained on this policy.

Sasone Program for Campers with Special Needs: The J is able to support a limited number of children with special needs forJ Camp, primarily through funding by Sasone and The Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City. Sasone, a department of TheJewish Federation, provides critically needed support for children identified with developmental or special needs to participate in agroup in J Camp programs. With the help of Sasone and other funders, we work with Staff to modify and adapt programexperiences and provide Para support as available. If your child has special needs or requires assistance to function in a groupsetting successfully, please contact DD Gass at 913-327-8079 or [email protected]. In addition to the J Camp enrollment fee, families are asked to pay a portion of the Para cost. Space is limited. Financial assistance is available for Para support.

Child Abuse and Neglect: The Kansas City Child Protection Act mandates that all personnel working in a licensed day campmust report suspected child abuse or neglect. There is a penalty for violation of this reporting law. This act protects the peoplereporting to Social and Rehabilitative Services from any liability, civil or criminal. All records and reports concerning child abuse orneglect filed with SRS or the district court are confidential and will not be disclosed. All staff members at The Jewish CommunityCenter Day Camps are trained and aware of this policy.
