Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences (CLBS)Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences (CLBS) at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket is one of the largest liver transplant programs in the world. The centre performs more than 250 liver transplants annually and has accumulated an experience of more than 3500 liver transplant surgeries. The centre also performs variety of complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeries and is at the forefront of HPB Oncology. We as a team of surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists, radiologists and nurses have been involved in the care of the patients with liver disease and transplantation since 1998, when liver transplantation was a rarity in India. The centre has been growing ever since and has made significant contributions to the field of liver surgery. It has been a great accomplishment of the team to have trained many aspiring liver surgeons and has helped in establishing various liver transplant units across the globe. Many teams including the teams from USA, Malaysia, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh have been trained. Such teams from India also have been encouraged notably from the centres like ILBS New Delhi, SMS Medical college Jaipur, Cuttack Medical College, Bangalore Medical College and King George's Medical University Lucknow. It gives a great pride to know that many of our trainees have continue the work in the field of liver and transplant surgery and have established themselves across the world. CLBS has been involved in care of patients from over 20 countries. It is a special place to many as it o�ers world class facilities and treatment options at par with best international centres anywhere , but at a much a�ordable cost and with consistent results. Over the years the team has pioneered in Living Donor Liver Transplantation and HPB Oncology in India and has introduced a numerous innovations to make the surgery safe and to improve the outcomes of these complex procedures of surgeons and physicians.CLBS has always focussed greatly in training the next generations and impart knowledge and hold a platform to exchange information and share experiences with one another. With an aim to encourage and bring all the people involved in this field , our constant e�ort has been to expand this platform to invite scientists, physicians, surgeons, and trainees to participate in these annual conferences, which has been extending its reach every year. The COVID pandemic has a�ected all of us in many ways, but we still would like to continue our pursuit of knowledge and play our role in bringing the transplant community together. The 7th CLBS Symposium is being held from 17th to 19th September 2021 and the theme this year is “The Kidney in Liver Transplant”. Patients of chronic liver disease often present with associated renal dysfunction, which further complicates the management of these usually critically ill patients. There are many dilemmas and unanswered questions pertaining to the management of renal dysfunction in the patients of liver diseases. Therefore, this year we have chosen the mentioned theme. We hope that this conference will also help the young surgeons, anaesthetists and hepatologists and we encourage their active participation. We have invited leaders in their respective fields to share with all of us their experiences and we hope this will be great opportunity learn from the masters the latest updates and future directions in transplant surgery and hepatology.

The Covid-19 pandemic has severely disrupted every aspect of our lives. However, it seems that we now have to learn to live with it. With that ethos it gives me great pleasure to invite you to the 7th edition of CLBS Symposium in New Delhi.
The theme for this year’s symposium is “The Kidney in Liver Transplant”.
The science of liver transplant is closely intertwined with the art of maintaining of renal function. Even in the early stages of chronic liver disease, renal function may be deranged and its optimal management will ensure long life for the patient with chronic liver disease. As liver disease advances, kidney function will deteriorate and often consideration will have to be given for combined liver and kidney transplant or is as more popular today, sequential transplantation. Two factors have contributed to this, one is the knowledge that kidney function may improve considerably with improvement in liver function and further the option of ‘safety net’ will not put these patients at a disadvantage should they go ahead with liver transplant alone. On long term follow up, many transplanted patients will have deterioration in renal function and appropriate care towards this will improve long term transplant outcomes.
The hepatologist, critical care and anaesthetists have been challenged to deal with liver recipients with renal impairment. There are many areas where there is no consensus such as Terlipressin versus Noradrenaline, intraoperative versus delayed CRRT and merits of SLED over CRRT.
In the three days of the meetings, we hope to discuss all aspects of kidney care involved with liver transplant and try and reach a consensus where there are grey areas.
There will also be a session on Paediatric Transplantation on Day 1 with focus on ACLF, metabolic disorders a�ecting kidney function and biliary atresia.
I hope this will help us to progress in the field of liver transplant and encourage you to seek answers where none exist. We would be honoured and delighted, if you would participate and encourage rest of your department to attend the meeting.
