From the Pastor’s Desk Happy Father’s Day! – These beautiful words are found in the Book of Sirach, chapter 3:

In word and deed honor your father, that all blessings may come to you. (vs. 8)

Kindness to a father will not be forgotten;

It will serve as a sin offering – it will take lasting root. (vs.14)

Today we honor our Fathers. May God bless them with good health, abiding faith, heartfelt compassion, and everlasting life – on this special day and always!

Corpus Christi – The Most Holy Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ – When we think of the Eucharist, we usually understand it as a noun. For example, the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

The Eucharist is something we receive. The Eucharist is what is reserved in the tabernacle for the sick or for our personal adoration and prayer. A complete Eucharistic theology, however, includes the understanding that the Eucharist is also a verb. Literally, Eucharist means “thanksgiving.” Indeed, that is what we do when we “gather for Eucharist.” We give thanks to Father – for his Son, for his many blessings, for forgiving our sins, for nourishing us in this great sacrament.

Furthermore, the Eucharist – while it is something we receive – is also something we become. St. Augustine is fond of saying that we should become the mystery we receive. St. Augustine’s advice is as apropos today as it was back in the 5th century. When we receive the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass, let us ask the Lord for the grace to BECOME more like him – that is, to become more merciful, more just, more compassionate, more earnest in faith, more forthright. Farewell to Fr. Nelson – Although Fr. Nelson is assigned to Nativity

Parish through the end of June, this weekend marks his last days with us. He will use the next two weeks for vacation and to move to his new assignment at St. Joseph Parish in Tampa. Words cannot express my deep appreciation to Fr. Nelson for his deep faith and dedicated service to the people of Nativity. We have been greatly blessed by Fr. Nelson’s ministry to us. On a personal level, I will miss working with him as well as his joyful presence in our household. But I wish

Fr. Nelson every happiness and blessing as he begins this new chapter in his priesthood. Once again, please join me in thanking Fr. Nelson for all that he has done for us. And join me in praying for God’s abundant blessings upon him and upon his ministry at St. Joseph’s.

- Fr. Tapp

Weekly Reflection for June 18, 2017 The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

(courtesy of catholicsteward.com) This has been a month of

celebrations for us as Catholics. Today we celebrate the Solemnity (Feast) of Corpus Christi during which we commemorate the great gift of the Eucharist which stands at the heart and life of the mission of the Church. This is not only a time to celebrate this gift to us from Christ, but to consider its meaning and richness both in the life of the Church and in our lives as Catholics.

The celebration of Corpus Christi commemorates the presence of the Body and Blood of Christ, one of the Sacraments of the Eucharist. On Holy Thursday Jesus met the Apostles for the Last Supper, when He said, “This is my Body (indicating the bread) and this is my Blood (designating the wine).” We as Catholics acknowledge the gift of the Eucharist, as this is the food of our souls.

Twelve times during the Last Supper Jesus reminds us that He is the Bread of Life. He is quite definite about this reality. It is He Who gives us eternal life. Every Catholic Mass, not just this one, is both a memorial to Christ’s life, death, and Resurrection, and also a participation in the sacrifice which Christ made on the Cross for us. When we approach to receive communion, we are in reality at the foot of the Cross, adoring, asking forgiveness, and offering ourselves to Christ Who loved us to His death.

Today, and every day when we approach the Eucharist, we need to keep this in mind. We need to receive this incredible gift and then as good stewards we need to share it by being disciples, by sharing the Good News in our lives and how we live them.

The Period of Mystagogy has ended for those adults and youth who were welcomed to the Sacraments of Initiation at our Easter Vigil in April. Through this time of the Easter Season they have continued to meet weekly

in order to more fully “unpack” the mysteries of our faith. Please continue to pray for all those who are part of the Rite of Christian Initiation (the catechumenate) and for all those seeking to come to know Jesus more deeply. Dismissals from the 10:30 Mass and teachings will continue through the summer month of June. During July, we will be on hiatus. We will resume in August.

An Invitation from the Office of the Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute

Prayer & Reflection for the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ:

Is God Calling You to Serve as a Lay Ecclesial Minister in His Church?

“we, though many, are one body” (1 Cor 10:17) This is a Sunday in which we can pause and reflect with gratitude the sacrifice Jesus made for us. In the words of St. Thomas à Kempis, “Lord, all things in Heaven and earth are Yours. I desire to give myself to You as a free offering, and to be Yours forever. O Lord, in simplicity of heart I offer myself to You this day, to be Your servant forever. I do this as an act of homage to You, and as an act of perpetual praise.” (The Imitation of Christ) Ask yourself: What does it mean for me right now to be bread for others as Jesus was? Effective lay ecclesial ministers need more than a heart for ministry; they also need personal and spiritual maturity, knowledge of theology and other disciplines and pastoral skills. Lay ministers need and deserve a formation program with high standards, effective methods, and comprehensive goals. This is what we, here in the Diocese, work hard to offer to you with the Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute. Classes begin on September 9, 2017. If you’re interested in attending the LPMI Year of Discernment monthly sessions, visit the LPMI web site at http://dosp.org/lpmi/ or contact the LPMI office at the Pastoral Center at 727.344.1611, ext. 5458 or [email protected]. Nativity Catholic Church 4 June 18, 2017

2017 Summer Projects at Nativity Welcome to summer project season or, as I’m affectionately dubbing it, Nativity’s own version of “Fixer Upper.” No, Chip and Jo aren’t on property – major bummer, right? Last summer, we updated our 201 S. Oakwood Avenue house, or, as most people know it, Pastoral Care. This summer, we have moved a few feet over to our 203 S. Oakwood Avenue house, where Family Promise resides during four weeks each year. Many parishioners know this house as the former convent where the Srs. Irene, Pauline, and Jackie lived. We are proudly renaming this house the “Sr. Jackie House.” Sr. Jackie, as she was affectionately called, of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, went home to Heaven on November 10, 2013, in Manchester, NH. Sr. Jackie served her Congregation for 74 years. A very educated woman well-ahead of her time, Sister held a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Philosophy and taught at both the elementary and secondary levels. Nativity was blessed to have Sr. Jackie serve here for 24 years and benefitted from her exceptional evangelization work. She touched many lives here at the parish until her retirement in 2011. This near 50-year-old house needed a little TLC on the inside and outside, so we have removed the old flooring, the outdated ceiling and insulation, the old A/C ductwork, and the aged drop ceilings. We will raise the ceilings back to their original height, replace some drywall, and repaint and install new flooring in the entire house. We are updating to LED lights and are readying the house to better serve the Family Promise ministry. We are also creating TWO NEW small/medium-sized MEETING SPACES for the parish. Outside, we are installing new fencing and landscaping and making necessary repairs to the gutters and soffits. Here are a few initial pictures of our “Fixer Upper:”

Thanks to the generosity of two donors in our parish and their continued deep commitment to Nativity and Family Promise, the new flooring and half of the demolition costs

were donated. Through our continued capital savings, your offertory contributions, and your participation in APA, we have been able to keep more offertory here at home, which will cover most of the remaining rehab costs. However, if there are any other parishioners who wish to make a specific contribution in Sr. Jackie’s memory, there are some additional items on our wish list (below) that we would like to place in the refurbished Sr. Jackie House. These items will not only enhance the house itself, but will truly leave a lasting impact on parish ministry life and their works 52 weeks a year. Please prayerfully consider whether you can make a contribution towards any of the following: 1. $7,500 for A/C ductwork and a new air conditioning system to cool the Sr. Jackie House more efficiently. Ductwork will be

installed regardless, but purchase of a new unit will be dependent on funding; 2. New refrigerator for the kitchen to benefit Family Promise meals and all ministries; 3. New electric, self-venting oven/range to benefit Family Promise volunteer cooking efforts and all ministries; 4. New dishwasher to benefit Family Promise meal cleanup efforts and all ministries; 5. New microwave oven to benefit Family Promise volunteer cooking efforts and all ministries; 6. Two Smart TV’s (42”- 54”) for the two new meeting spaces and future ministry growth; 7. $6,000, or any portion thereof, for the second half of the demolition cost; 8. Donations of money and labor for landscaping, mulching, and replanting to improve the exterior of the Sr. Jackie House; 9. New “little tike” style, playground equipment for the outdoor play space for Family Promise families with young children; and 10. New folding tables and folding chairs for the two new meeting spaces. If you can help, please call Rob Martin (813.681.4608) or Bonnie Ussery (813.413.8351) for more information on these items or how to make a donation in honor of Sr. Jackie Hebert for this wonderful, updated facility.

Other Projects In our school we are:

1. Completing the remodel of the last bathroom in our oldest north wing; 2. Improving our upstairs Tech Support Center as we continue to expand towards a 1:1 tablet program in our school and increase

service capabilities for the entire campus infrastructure; 3. Installing the second Sun Shade on the large playground; and 4. Replacing four classrooms A/C units in the North Building and upgrading to more energy-efficient systems.

In the parish we are: 1. Finalizing plans to begin Phase 2 of the Social Hall project, which will include a remodel of all bathrooms, replacement of the

remaining exterior doors and windows, and completion of an improved and accessible reconfiguration of the outside southeast entrances to the A and B rooms.

2. Completing minor repair work at the Rectory to fix exterior deteriorating doors and frames. Future projects we are saving for:

1. Church Office window replacement – approx. $36,000 2. Chapel Pews restoration – approx. $37,000-40,000 3. Chapel bathroom restoration and electric light control system – cost TBD 4. The establishment of a capital improvement endowment. 5. And many more! We never stop moving and shaking, even over the summer. I truly hope you all continue to have a safe and happy summer, Nativity!

- Rob Martin, Director Finance and Operations

bien tuyo. (vs. 8) El bien que hayas hecho a tu padre no será olvidado;
