Crowds flocked around Jesus. They were hungry for the words He spoke to them. They also came to seek healing for body and soul. We can imagine how busy Jesus was. But He never got totally absorbed by this activity. As we read in today's Gospel passage, He was used to rising very early before dawn, and going off to a deserted place, where He prayed. He was perfectly aware how many people were still in need of healing, how many were suffering from physical or spiritual pain, but He also knows how many suffer till this day, all over the world - and yet He still withdraws to a deserted place to pray. Even Jesus needed this time for himself, for rest, for unwinding, but - most importantly - for cultivating His relationship with the Father, which was the secret of His immense power and the effectiveness of His ministry.
We are reminded that - even more than Jesus himself - we need to maintain contact with God, in order to replenish His sanctifying energy, which helps us live more fully and meaningfully. Modern man falls in various spiritual traps, gets lost in life, more than ever before. This is because he has often lost the ability or in fact a desire to maintain that relationship with God, replacing it with various types of "liturgies": in front of a TV, at sport stadiums, or even at shopping malls. It seems that today's man needs more time for a reflection, that is contemplation on himself, on the value and purpose of life, which goes far beyond the physical world.
Our sacrifices for others are often admirable. But we also need to take care of ourselves, in a moment of rest, regaining the inner peace. We need time to lift our thoughts to God, to put everything in its right place in our lives, and to live more fully. If this isn't happening we reduce ourselves to the functionality of a machine, an android that after fulfilling its purpose can be discarded.
The greatest problem of our times is lack of reflection, which becomes an profound and potent source of evil. This manifests itself in the fact that we are constantly driven by external and transient things, and we don't look deeper, seeking God who is transcending the reality, who is the beginning and the end. Too often we catch ourselves completely absorbed in external matters, staring at screens, images, websites, not finding time to look beyond, to gaze inside ourselves and listen to God's voice that resonates in us. Yet the holiness of our external actions depends on our God-filled interior. It is in contact with God that we find strength and zeal for doing what is right.
