We have a fantastic staff team who are very passionate about providing a nurturing and challenging learning environment that supports the spiritual, social, emotional and academic development of each and every student. Growing up in a small country town outside of Gympie I certainly connect with the sense of community that is St Ignatius Catholic Primary School. This week we saw all of our students return. The first day of school is my favourite day of the year watching each student return to a place that they know they will find friendship, joy, laughter, challenge and learning. There is nothing better than seeing our wide eyed Preps start for the very first time and watching them rapidly grow and develop. I myself have four children and also had the joy of a Prep drop off for my daughter Ava this week. While I have supported hundreds of preps on their first day there is something special about when your own child steps into the unknown of school life. School is an adventure and a place of exploration. I am very thankful that I found a vocation that I can join the ride and support our students’ journey. I very much look forward to getting to know our community better as the year progresses. Year C

We respectfully acknowledge the

Turrbal people, as the traditional owners

and caretakers of the land which is the

Toowong Catholic Parish.

We acknowledge the Elders, past and

present. May we, too, be good stewards of

this land.

My name is Duncan Maitland and feel very blessed to have been appointed as Acting Principal for 2019 of St Ignatius Catholic Primary School. Even in my short time here it is clear that the Ignatian Charism and strong Mercy tradition is a lived experience in our community. The spirit of welcome and generosity has been very forthcoming from the staff, students and families alike. I look forward to building stronger connections with our St Ignatius Parish and thank Fr Wrex for his support as I start the year.

I have been a teacher and leader in schools for the past 18 years and worked in 6 different school communities across the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Each community has contributed to who I am as a person and an educator and I feel very blessed to now be part of the St Ignatius Parish and School community. My very first practicum as a pre—

service teacher at university was at St Ignatius 22 years ago so it is lovely to return in a slightly different capacity.

Our school has progressed much in that time and I must thank and congratulate Roycelyn Wilden for her strong leadership of St Ignatius School over the past 13 years. She has clearly left a legacy of a wonderful school that lives out its mission of ‘Loving God, Loving Learning and Loving Each Other’.

Please come and say “Hi”, if you see me around.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

St Ignatius Parish welcomes expressions of interest for an Enquiry Session to be held week commencing 25th February, 2019 for adults considering becoming Catholic.

The RCIA is best described as a journey of faith which passes through a number of different phases and focuses on conversion of heart and mind to Christ. It is a gradual journey tailored to the needs of the individual!

Candidates meet regularly with a group of people from the parish to learn about Catholic belief and practice. Various rituals are held in the church at important points along the journey. People may or may not choose to

embark on the RCIA journey after this period of enquiry.

If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a Catholic Christian or would be willing to journey with an enquirer, the first step is to make contact with the Parish Priest or Pastoral Associate via email

[email protected] or phone 07 3870 7818 to register your interest in the session.

PARISH SUBMISSION FOR PLENARY COUNCIL

The development of the parish submission for the Plenary Council is the first major event of the year. Parishioners will have an opportunity to review the submissions that have already been received and add their own

ideas. The current submissions have been themed under 9 topics and are presented separately at the back of the church so that you can choose the theme or themes of interest to you.

You are invited to add your own ideas. You can do that in one of two ways:

either write on the sheet of paper and leave it in the church so others can add their ideas, or

take home a copy and return the completed form the following week. Individual submissions can be accepted up to Sunday 10 February.

On Friday 15 February, at 6pm in the Hall, parishioners are invited to attend an evening session for groups to discuss particular topics. Each group will focus on one of the themes and look at all the ideas that have been recorded under that theme. They will then consider how the ideas should be recorded for the purpose of the plenary council and then finalise the submission for that topic. Further info. will be provided in the newsletter but please reserve Friday 15 February as an important opportunity to document how you would like to see the Catholic Church in the 21st century.
