    1970s - HISTORY

The 1960s and early 1970s were times of

    great civil unrest and change.

Americans took on the issues of civil rights,

the Vietnam War, women's rights, and theenvironment. Like the Civil War and the

Great Depression, the process of social

change during this period produced a numberof songs, many of which remain popular

    today.

    1970sSOCIAL ISSUES

Social Issues: During the 1960s and early1970s, there was a rising tide of protest

    against America's involvement in the

    Vietnam War.

Unlike the popular support for participation

in World War II, many Americans felt that

the struggle in Vietnam was internal andbest left to the Vietnamese to decide.

    1970sSOCIAL ISSUES

Social movements, particularly the anti-war movement, were highly visible on

    college and university campuses.

Mandatory busing to achieve racial school

    integration, particularly in Boston and

other Northeastern cities, often led toviolence and a disruption of the

    educational process.
