Message from the ICCA President – Breaking down the walls
2011 has given us all a great reminder of the importance of fundamental freedoms: freedom to travel and meet; freedom to protest; freedom to speak our minds. It is therefore totally appropriate that we will be gathering together in October this year in Leipzig, for it was in Leipzig where the movement for German reunification began that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the opening up of half of Europe into a world where open discussion and argument are the norm. ICCA members will gather not only to do great business with one another, but to celebrate the freedoms that allow our industry to thrive, and are also essential for science, medicine, technology and trade to grow and progress, and for our globalised society to address global problems such as climate change.
This will almost certainly be ICCA’s largest-ever Congress with representatives from more countries than ever before. But in itself, big is not automatically best! We are therefore working overtime to ensure that the large anticipated numbers don’t prevent us from delivering a highly personalised, friendly experience – that means more investment in networking tools to make it easy to meet the right delegates, more educational content so that session attendances don’t get too big for interaction, and more online appointments and business exchanges. We have to constantly work to break down our own walls at the Congress, to enable each delegate to meet their objectives and to meet new contacts with the knowledge and skills and business connections that will increase their competitiveness.
We should never underestimate the enormous value of the freedom that we all enjoy to meet together in this way to share our knowledge and opinions. A mere two decades ago this was impossible for the citizens of Leipzig.
I’m really looking forward to this Congress, ICCA’s 50th: our German friends have organised a great programme; they are ready with open arms to welcome their colleagues from all over the world. I hope you’ll be there to enjoy this unique gathering with us!

Message from the Chairman of the German LHC
ICCA is synonymous with innovation. On the one hand, this will be reflected in the programme of the Congress 2011. The most respected experts in their respective specialities will present familiar topics to you in a different light, or speak about entirely new subjects, developments and trends. To ensure that we always have the edge, it is important to look beyond the rim of your teacup and that’s exactly what the Congress programme will do for us.
On the other hand, there will be innovative things in terms of the layout and organisation of the Congress and its related activities. One element is the mobility concept. As usual, you will be transferred from and to the airport if you arrive and depart during the usual dates. But once you are in the city, your ICCA badge will give you free rides on all public means of transport. This means that the usual shuttle buses will only be seen on a few selected occasions like some of the social evening functions. For all other activities, like getting from your hotel to the venue, or exploring the city, you can use public means of transport for free. This gives you more individual freedom. But even more importantly, this is a step towards reducing emissions and more sustainability.
We have always highlighted that the ICCA Congress 2011 is a team effort of the entire country, perhaps more so than at any previous congress. The most attractive German regions have teamed up to offer you a great choice of pre- and post-convention tours. They have designed tailor-made tour packages for you where you can combine education with pleasure: the offers include visits to the meeting infrastructures of the various regions, but also their cultural highlights and natural charms, leisure and fun.
With only five months to go until the ICCA Congress, our preparations are in full swing, and we do look forward to welcoming you. We look forward to welcoming newcomers and first-time attendees just as much as we will love to meet again all the long-standing colleagues who have been our friends for many years.

Official Venue
The CCL Congress Center Leipzig is part of the Leipziger Messe new Exhibition and Convention Centre which was opened in April 1996. Five exhibition halls of 20,000 sqm each total an exhibition space of 100,000 sqm. Due to their flexibility, these halls are frequently used to accommodate purpose-built auditoria for large meetings of several thousand delegates. The architects were Gerkan, Marg und Partner who have considerable experience in planning logistically complex edifices like airports, train stations and sports arenas. The Glass Hall, a futuristic steel-and-glass construction and the landmark of the property, was designed by British star architect Ian Ritchie who also designed the Louvre Pyramid in Paris. The CCL building is one of the most modern and attractive meeting facilities in Europe. Set in a park landscape, the venue features architectural beauty and latest-generation media and telecommunication technology. 23 halls and rooms on four levels, together with spacious multi-purpose rooms and foyers, offer maximum scope for a novel and creative layout of the ICCA Congress.

General Assembly
This is the annual meeting for ICCA members to conduct the legally required business of the association and to set its strategic future direction, and includes such matters as future budgets and fee levels and voting for new members of ICCA’s Board of Directors. The President and Chief Executive Officer report on past performance, the challenges facing the industry as a whole and new business initiatives, and ICCA member delegates are able to vote on a range of important issues. Time is allocated during the day for delegates to meet in sector and chapter groupings to debate the key issues and to share relevant information with one another.
Chapter Meetings
Chapter meetings are scheduled to enable delegates to discuss ICCA matters with colleagues from the same geographical region, and to hear about new developments and regional initiatives.
Sector Meetings
Delegates will first meet in their sectors (industry supplier segments) to discuss issues of relevance to their branch of the meetings industry, to debate the merits of policy changes and other proposals recommended by ICCA’s Board of Directors, and to develop new ICCA projects and promotions. After discussing those important internal matters, different sector education sessions start and delegates can choose which sector education session they would like to join regardless of which sector they belong to.
First Time Attendee Programme
ICCA has a longstanding tradition in embracing those delegates who are attending the ICCA Congress for the first time. Every year we arrange a special programme for first timers to make them feel at ease and immediately part of the great ICCA family. If you would like to participate in this specially designed programme for first timers please make sure to indicate when registering that you are a first timer and would like to join the special First Time Attendee session on the Saturday afternoon. First timers will be pre-assigned seats and matched up with Mentors coming either from the same branch or region. These Mentors are either experienced ICCA congress delegates, or have recently been a first timer themselves and understand how you feel and what questions you might have. The Mentors will share their experiences with you as well as advise which sessions they think you may find useful for your professional and /or personal development. They will be available throughout the Congress, however can also be contacted prior to, as well as after the event.
So, if this ICCA Congress is your first and you would like to ensure your greatest return on investment, please sign up now for the First Time Attendee Programme and plan to arrive on time to experience the entire Programme starting on Saturday 22 October at 15.00 hours. Looking forward to meeting you in Leipzig!
Note: This session is mainly aimed at people who are relatively new to ICCA and the industry. For people who have been in the industry for some time, but have never attended the ICCA Congress before, this session might not bring much new information, however it is an excellent opportunity to meet other newcomers and start the networking and exchanging of business early!

Congress Education Programme
More Choice Than Ever Before!
There will be over 40 official sessions taking place over the three days of the education programme, the most we’ve ever offered, the vast majority of which are being created specifically for this one event. Almost all of them have been designed for CEOs and senior directors, with a sprinkling of more basic sessions for delegates to fill in the gaps in their specialist knowledge and skills.
Our goal is to stimulate strategic thinking and creative solutions, and ultimately to help ICCA members enhance their competitiveness in this ever more challenging world.
Global Perspectives – Across Industries as Well as Regions
As always, the speakers will be brought together from Asia-Pacific, the Americas, and Africa /Middle East as well as Europe, along with some great German contributors, and will comprise the following mix:
• Experts from outside the meetings industry with marketing and other business lessons that help us think about our challenges and opportunities in new ways.
• Top clients representing a variety of different association and corporate sectors, to share their views on where they see their industry sector heading, how their own events are evolving, and what it requires to do business and build relationships with them.
• Researchers and academics reporting on recent surveys, reports, and trends.
• And of course, dozens of experienced ICCA members will be sharing their insights and case studies from the front of the meeting rooms, whilst encouraging everyone in the audience to do the same. The layouts and formats of the sessions are being carefully designed with this interactivity in mind.
• In total more than 100 speakers, panellists, session leaders and moderators will be involved in this year’s programme.
Strategic Partner: We’re delighted to welcome back Reed Travel Exhibitions as Strategic Partners for this year’s education programme. Their support has helped us create what we’re sure will be ICCA’s strongest and most innovative programme ever.

Examples from the Programme
Whilst the overall shape of the programme is complete, and 90 % of the sessions are conceptually finalised, we’re currently still confirming attendance arrangements with many of our guest speakers. As speakers confirm their involvement over the coming few weeks and months you’ll be able to see their details on the Congress website.
Here is a selection of the sessions in outline, to provide an overview of the breadth of new content on offer. ICCA members with last-minute great ideas are still encouraged to submit this information to ICCA CEO Martin Sirk. If these topics can’t be squeezed into this year’s programme they will be considered for future Congresses.
MEETING SECTORS
Medical /pharma industry – trends, challenges, opportunitiesA panel of experts drawn from key medical associations, pharmaceutical companies, and CME specialists will be debating the biggest issues facing our most important meetings sector. Whilst we repeat this general topic each year, we bring together different expert speakers and focus on new key issues and the very latest trends, so that the content is radically different from year to year.
IT/Telecoms /Hi-tech industries – how events in these growth sectors are evolving.Where this sector leads, others are sure to follow. Not just relevant for winning this type of business, but for understanding trends that will cut across sectors.
View from the advertising /marketing industryHow is advertising changing? How are the marketing associations educating their members and organising their own live events? The thinking of these professionals will profoundly impact the strategies and behaviour of their corporate clients, not least in how much these clients will invest in meetings.
MARKETS
Doing business in Russia and with RussiansLeipzig is in the heart of the former Eastern Block, so this is a great opportunity to hear about the differences in business culture when dealing with Russia and other nearby states. We’ll feature Russian meetings industry perspectives, expatriate perspectives from suppliers based in Moscow, client viewpoints, and examples from Russians working for multinational companies.
German outbound meetings businessGermany is one of the most strategically important outbound meetings markets: it’s massive in volume terms, financially stable, but not easy for outsiders to understand how clients act and think, and how the market is structured. Now we’re here in Germany, we’ll be featuring a high-powered panel to provide concrete advice on how to succeed in winning German-originating business.
Doing business in ChinaWe may be meeting in Europe, but ICCA’s delegates want to know how to do business globally. At least one session will address this issue, since China is currently the fastest growing market on the planet. Opportunities exist to add in additional small breakout sessions on other key markets such as India and Brazil as the programme becomes finalised.

STRATEGIC THINKING
Future direction of Experiential MarketingMeetings don’t stand alone as a communication tool, they’re part of bigger strategic marketing issues. This session led by leading specialist agency executives will challenge our understanding of where meetings fit into this bigger strategic picture, and how new approaches to managing the customer relationship are transforming thinking about live events.
Congress 2020The very latest results from the deep-dives and follow-up surveys that have been carried out since the first round of results were reported at the 2010 ICCA Congress. Lots of interesting data is being constantly generated by this innovative global survey into the medium-term future shape of our industry. Congress 2020 is sponsored by a range of ICCA members who’ll be contributing their own insights.
Hybrid meetings – theory and practice beyond the hypeWhat really works; what really goes on; when should different models of virtual / live hybrid events be used. This session brings together researchers and practitioners to deliver a deeper understanding of the interactions that occur in these meetings.
Regional versus Global development in association meetingsWe’re seeing the emergence of more and more regional association meetings in more regions of the world, and during the financial crisis it appeared that regional meetings were less negatively impacted than global meetings. This session explores what’s happening in a range of markets, using data from the ICCA Association Database as a baseline, and asking the question – “how can members help ICCA to keep fully up to date with these new events as they start to emerge?”
Generation Y delegates, decision-makers, and staffLed by an Asian specialist in educating older executives about individuals who are two generations younger, and only open to older delegates (!), this innovative workshop session will feature group work using iPads. Bring your reading-glasses and hearing-aid, and open your mind!
PRACTICAL SKILLS
Fundamentals of bidding for association congressesAn ideal, extra-long session for industry managers who have recently moved over from the corporate market to also be responsible for the association sector.
PR Skills to become an in-house expertBuilding on the success of our PR Kit, we’re bringing in outside experts to help members improve their PR performance. The vast majority of members handle PR in-house, and this session is designed to deliver easy ways to make this more effective.
ICCA Data trainingIntroductory group sessions are complemented by non-stop one-on-one advanced training that can be booked up by individual delegates. A full team of ICCA Researchers will be available on-site to provide a customised service.

INNOVATIVE MARKETING MODELS
Creating new events – more new case studiesThis topic was a big hit at the 2010 Congress, and this represents a trend that we’re certain is taking off in all regions of the world. There are now numerous models for creating new events, and we’ll be taking a look at some of the most interesting examples by ICCA members and outside entrepreneurs.
Medical Cities/Tech Cities/Knowledge Cities/Future CitiesMany cities are trying to build specialist “critical mass” in certain key sectors (eg setting up new hospital research centres and universities in planned concentrations), creating a resource that will enable them to present themselves to the market using new branding approaches. This session will explore what it takes to achieve this type of label, how it can be used to leverage more meetings business, and what new marketing models of this kind are likely to be created in the near future.
Co-operation between competitorsVenues acting as regional sales agents for venues from other regions; cities on different continents agreeing to common activity programmes. These and other examples of new models have emerged recently, to complement the existing consortium model that was pioneered by BestCities. Are more on the way, how are these models set up, what are the business advantages and challenges of working with what would previously have been considered competitors?
COMPETITION OR OPPORTUNITY?
How the Business Travel sector is evolving Things are changing fast in this sector, and all the signs are that corporate travel experts are encroaching on the traditional field of meetings management companies. Should we be worried? This session will showcase what’s happening as business travel associations rebrand themselves and start to offer meetings credentials to their members, and offer answers to the question as to whether this is an opportunity for new business for ICCA members as well as an emerging threat.
Project Management – skill sets and methodologies to improve meetings management? The Project Management Institute claims to be one of the biggest professional associations on the planet. How do their qualifications and training relate to the skills needed in our industry? Are our clients becoming PM accredited and focused, and if so what does this imply for their expectations from traditional meetings suppliers?
COOL AND NEW
Game Theory and its impact on delegate engagementCase study on how an international association incorporated “Game Theory” into the design and execution of one of their recent events. As well as gaining an understanding of what Game Theory actually is, this session will work through a detailed case study as though you were delegates at that meeting, using group work and iPads.
What are the latest Apps being used in our industry? What do they do? What do they look like? Where can you find them? In this moderated workshop you’ll be able to download and play with the latest and most innovative tools that are either being created specifically for our industry, or which are being picked up and adopted.
AND MUCH MORE …
We will also be covering issues such as national economic impact surveys and the advocacy opportunities that arise from them; the latest thinking on ROI models; how to build sustainable growth into regularly staged meetings using branding and community centred strategies; Green meeting issues in marketing and accreditation; strategic airline developments; strategic thinking and objective-setting in big international associations; what is happening in the global trade show business; and more.

The Copenhagen-Denmark Lecture
10th anniversary celebration
Dr. Kjell A. NordströmProudly sponsored by ICCA Denmark members
Personal recollections by Martin Sirk, ICCA CEO:“This traditional highlight of the Congress will be celebrating its 10th edition in Leipzig, but only a minority of this year’s delegates were present to hear the first Lecture when we held our 2002 Congress in Copenhagen. It was the first Congress I attended as CEO, and I will never forget the mind-blowing impact of the presentation that was delivered by Kjell Nordstrom.
The co-author of ‘Funky Business’ (the latest edition, ‘Funky Business Forever’ is my favourite business book) literally transformed the way that many of us view what is going on in our industry and in the wider globalised world. I still remember him stating that ‘The Independent Republic of Britney Spears is far more important in marketing terms than Belgium’ and that ‘A world-class website is no more or less important to business success than well-functioning toilets in your office building – necessary but insufficient’. Tastes in pop music may have moved on over the last decade, social media has taken over from websites as the most-hyped marketing channel, but the world is just as confusing and even faster-moving than the first time Kjell shared his unique insights with our delegates. Be prepared to change your perspectives forever!
Welcome back Kjell! And thank you for unintentionally starting a wonderful ICCA tradition.”
Dr. Kjell A. NordströmDr. Kjell A. Nordström is the enfant terrible of the new world of business. He talks to audiences all over the world, he writes books and articles and reads – everything from Playboy to Architectural Digest to Pinter. His performances are high touch, dynamic, highly interactive, thought provoking and always in line with time. The 2009 Thinkers 50, the biennial ranking of management thinkers, ranked him at number 23 globally and put him on the top-five list in Europe. His dynamic style makes him a highly appreciated speaker through out the world.

Offsite sessions
Inspiring off-site education sessions that showcase local experts, institutions, companies and locations.
At our 2010 Congress in Hyderabad, India, we were inspired by a wonderful off-site lecture held at the prestigious Indian School of Business. We decided to incorporate this type of session into every future ICCA Congress. This year our local hosts came up with so many great ideas that we have decided to include three of them in the programme, one on Monday, one one Tuesday and one on Wednesday.
There will be strictly limited attendance with advance registration required, and delegates should note that there will be at least five other education sessions running concurrently in the main Congress venue.

Expert Advice Appointments
Business Exchange
ICCA’s success over four decades has been built on the principle of members exchanging commercial information with one another about recently hosted events. This is the foundation of ICCA’s Association Database, and will be a central component of this year’s congress. To apply for the Business Exchange (BE) each delegate will be requested to provide data on one major international rotating event they have recently been involved with, and to be willing to share their insights and inside knowledge about this event with other delegates throughout the congress. ICCA Data will support delegates in ensuring that an unprecedented amount of commercially important data will be exchanged during the congress, turning the event into a massive intelligence gathering opportunity.
The format is designed to ensure that commercial confidentiality issues are respected whilst encouraging interaction between the different sectors of ICCA membership. Adequate time and space will be scheduled during the congress to enable pre-set and ad hoc meetings and information exchange to take place between delegates. Spotme will help delegates to identify leads and to send meeting requests to other BE participants. There will be a dedicated Business Exchange Coffee Zone which will facilitate one-to-one meetings with small tables for quick-fire discussions.
All delegates are invited to take part in the Business Exchange. It is free of charge, but it is necessary to pre-register and it is open to ICCA members only.

Meet your guide and walk through the historic old town inner city of Leipzig. St. Thomas Church, home to J. S. Bach’s St. Thomas Choir, the Gewandhaus Concert Hall and the Opera testify to Leipzig’s great musical tradition. St. Nicholas Church, a fine edifice with a bright and lofty interior, was the sparking plug to the “Peaceful Revolution” of 1989 which led to the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany and Europe. The old Market square features fine historic buildings of various styles, including the beautiful Renaissance old Town Hall which now houses a museum. The New Town Hall impresses with its heavy Wilhelminian early 20th century style. Strolling through the romantic lanes around the Old Market and through the elegant historic shopping arcades, you will discover many charming details.
If you want to book a bus tour or any other tour, you can visit the tour desk and book this onsite.

Meissen, city of the “white gold” – full-day bus tour
Departure: 09.00, Meeting point “Goethestraße” (Novotel, opposite central railway station)
Even when approaching the city from a far distance, the skyline of Meissen bids you an impressive welcome with its landmarks: the castle mound with the tall belfries of the Cathedral, and Albrechtsburg Castle. The Cathedral which houses one of the most famous of the Wettin dynasty is seen as the epitome of Gothic style, while Albrechtsburg Castle is rated most important secular late-Gothic building in Germany. A visit to the National Porcelain Factory will take you to the cradle of chinaware production in Europe. Its story is associated with the alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger, the inventor of the “white gold”. Round off your excursion with a stroll down the romantic lanes of the historic city, and savour the excellent local wine.
Monday, October 24
Leipzig Zoo: Venturing into the Animal Kingdom – half-day walking tour
Meeting point: 10.00, The Westin Hotel
Opened in 1878, The Leipzig Zoological Garden looks back on a long and proud tradition of animal keeping. It displays a great biodiversity and has firmly established itself as one of the city’s most popular event and leisure venues. The Zoo covers about 225,000 m² and contains 6,700 animals of 900 different species. You can observe the animals in their natural habitats and you can experience their world with all senses. Your visit to Leipzig Zoo will turn into a unique and unforgettable adventure. The natural animal habitats include the world’s largest great apes enclosure Pongoland, the lion savannnah Makasi Simba, the Tiger Taiga, the Elephants’ Temple, and the Kiwara
Savannah which brings the continent of Africa to your doorstep. Leipzig Zoo takes seriously its responsibility for all animals and wants to win its visitors over to the protection of this world.
Tuesday, October 25
Dresden, the capital of Saxony – full-day bus tour
Departure: 09.00, Meeting point “Goethestraße” (Novotel, opposite central railway station)
Dresden is a lovely work of art. Splendid palaces and world-famous art collections contribute to the city’s charm just as much as the river Elbe and the beautiful surrounding landscapes. It was the Saxon King August the Strong who made Dresden a gem of Baroque architecture. Romantic art and music flourished throughout the 19th century. Today, Dresden is indeed a place of great artistic and musical tradition, but also one of Europe’s modern high-tech locations. During your day trip to Dresden, you will see the Semper Opera, the Zwinger Palace, the “Frauenkirche” (Our Ladies’ Church), and the Hofkirche Catholic Church. A stroll on the Brühl Terraces offers you a treat of fresh air and stunning scenic views.
Wednesday, October 26
Wittenberg, in the foot-steps of the Reformation – half-day bus tour
Departure: 09.00, Meeting point “Goethestraße” (Novotel, opposite central railway station)
Almost everything in Wittenberg reminds us of Martin Luther. There is the Castle Church with the famous door to which Luther nailed his 95 Theses, and with the tombs of Luther and Melanchthon. There is the town church with the Cranach altar, there is Luther Hall, Melanchthon’s house, and the residential palace of the elector. All that has made Wittenberg world famous happened within just 20 years. The town’s great story began in 1517 when Luther emerged with his 95 Theses, and it continued until 1546 when he was buried in the Castle Church. Shakespeare gave the town a place in world literature by having Hamlet study there. Visit the town known as the “Mother of the Reformation”, and set off on the trail of the movement which was born here and has changed the world.

The fast and comfortable ICE trains provide for good direct connections to all major cities in Germany. A ride to Berlin takes one hour, travel times to Frankfurt and Hamburg are 3 hours, and there is an hourly service. Even for some neighbouring European countries, the train may be an easy and attractive option for travelling to Leipzig. The travel time from Prague to Leipzig by train is 3.30 hours. Leipzig Central Station is located right in the heart of the historic city centre where most of the hotels are. A ride from there to the venue (by public transport or by car) takes approximately. 15 minutes.

LEIPZIG – a city’s soul
Leipzig is constantly reinventing itself, yet at the same time it is a city that stands for continuity, the long-term view and reliability. The soul of this city has always been characterised by energy, a creative will and the pride of its citizens. In the 12th century the first trade fairs in the world were held here, at the intersection of Europe’s most important trading routes. In 1409 the Alma Mater Lipsiensis was founded – the second oldest university in Germany. Hospitality and an openness to new ideas are centuries-old traditions here.
LEIPZIG – commerce and the entrepreneurial spirit
In the second half of the 19th century, Leipzig became the forerunner of industrialisation in Germany. The industrial architecture of the late 19th century has become one of the city’s attractions. Today, drive and the entrepreneurial spirit are fertile soil for well-known companies like Porsche, BMW, DHL and Amazon who are making major investments and moving into the city.
LEIPZIG – culture and art
Over the course of the centuries, Leipzig’s citizens have supported the arts, collected paintings, endowed museums and founded the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra. Leipzig is known all over the world as a city of music on account of the works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert Schumann and Johann Sebastian Bach. A concert by St. Thomas Choir in the actual place where Bach worked – St Thomas’s Church – is one of the cultural and emotional highlights of a visit to Leipzig.
LEIPZIG – changes world history
Leipzig’s political importance was underlined in autumn 1989 when protest marches ushered in the Peaceful Revolution, which in turn paved the way for German and European unification in the 1990’s. A must-see for every visitor to Leipzig is St. Nicholas Church, which was the political and spiritual spark plug to the Peaceful Revolution.
LEIPZIG – flair and lifestyle
Self-confidence and pleasure in enjoyment characterise the Leipzig lifestyle. In the lively Old Town more than 1,200 restaurants, pubs and cafés invite people to partake of some refreshment and relax. After a shopping spree in the magnificent Wilhelminian shopping arcades, some visitors are drawn to the nostalgic cafés, fashionable restaurants and elegant streets around the historic market square, whilst others prefer to mix with the student customers in the alternative art, theatre and pub scene. With over 120 hectares of woodland and parks and with golf courses, the rivers and canals within the city and the lakes to the south, Leipzig offers a wide range of recreational opportunities.
