Opportunity for No Longer Empty is all around. Every building, city block, neighborhood, and community has histories to reveal, stories to tell, and people to engage.

No Longer Empty began as a brilliant spark that creatively transformed an old fishing tackle store into a place that convened the public around the power of art to create meaning. Since 2009 we have orchestrated 18 museum-quality exhibitions featuring the works of 237 artists, 141 original commissions, and 188 public programs. We have engaged over 150,000 visitors from all walks of life, including 4,000 youth, turning underutilized spaces into vibrant cultural hubs across New York City.

MEL CHIN

Mel Chin is a conceptual artist known for a broad range of approaches that require multi-disciplinary and collaborative teamwork. He has insinuated art into unlikely places such as destroyed homes, toxic landfills, and popular television, investigating how art can provoke greater social awareness and responsibility. In 1989, Chin developed the ongoing project Revival Field, a pioneer in the field of “green remediation,” using plants to remove toxic metals from the soil. He also promotes works that benefit science, such as Operation Paydirt/Fundred Dollar Bill Project, an attempt to make New Orleans a lead-safe city. Chin has received awards and grants from National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council for the Arts, Art Matters, Creative Capital, and the Penny McCall, Pollock Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Rockefeller and Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundations. His film, 9-11/9-11, a hand-drawn, 24 minute, Chilean/USA Production, won the prestigious Pedro/Sienna Award for Best Animation from National Council for the Arts and Cultures, Chile, in 2007.

Shelley Rubin is a philanthropist and cultural leader. In 2011 she founded A Blade of Grass, an organization that supports artist projects in the service of social change, with No Longer Empty being the first grant recipient. As a board member of THIRTEEN/WNET and Human Rights Watch and as co-chair of the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, she has supported numerous cultural and humanitarian projects including residencies that bring artists from the Himalayan region and Cuba to the Vermont Studio Center and web-based educational resources such as Arts of the Islamic World. She is co-founder of the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, dedicated to the presentation and study of Himalayan art.

Deborah Fisher is the founding Executive Director of A Blade of Grass. An artist, administrator and entrepreneur, Fisher has worked as an arts and philanthropic advisor to Shelley and Donald Rubin, as studio manager of Socrates Sculpture Park, as an educator and curriculum developer for the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment, and has taught studio and art appreciation classes at New York University, among others. Fisher’s most recent project Bed Stuy Meadow, gathered over 100 volunteers to sow wildflower seeds on vacant land in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. Fisher is a board member of the Center for Artistic Activism, and has served as a moderator and panelist for discussions about art and civic life, socially engaged art and arts funding hosted by Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Lord Cultural Resources, No Longer Empty, Eyebeam, and Portland State University among others.

Nick Kozak is a full-time faculty member at Manhattan Hunter Science High School where he teaches Studio Art and Art History. As the sole art educator at Manhattan Hunter, he has instilled programs and initiatives that encourage intellectual curiosity while also reinforcing the importance of 21st century citizenship. Kozak studied Art History and Art Education at the State University of New York at New Paltz and later completed a Masters in Art Education at New York University, where he also teaches. He currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with his wife, cat, and a growing collection of comic books. More than often he makes food for people. He also makes art.
