Del Mar may not get the star it was hoping for in the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I) Aug. 22,
but it may get a star nonetheless. After dominating three races for fillies and mares
this year, Spendthrift Farm's seven-time grade I win- ner Beholder might take on males for the first time in the Classic.
"She's just been playing with the mares," trainer Richard Mandella said. "If I hurt her feelings in it, there's enough time to get another race before we go to the Breeders' Cup. But it'll be interesting to see how good she is. I think she's pretty good."
But the Hall of Fame conditioner made sure to emphasize he won't run her unless she's ready.
"It's three weeks apart (from her last start in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes, gr. I, Aug. 1), but if it was a month or five weeks, I'd say I'm really (going to run)," Mandella said. "She's a filly and I have to make sure she's back to par before I do that." BH

Materiality, winner of the Besilu Stables Florida Derby (gr. I) and most recently eighth in the
final jewel of the Triple Crown, has been retired due to a soft tissue injury, owner Alto Racing an- nounced Aug. 7. The Afleet Alex colt last worked July 25 at Saratoga, going a half-mile in :48.85.
"He held his own in what looks like one of the better 3-year-old crops in a while," said Alto Rac- ing's bloodstock adviser Steve Young, who bought Materiality last year for $400,000 at Fasig-Tipton's Midlantic sale in Timonium, Md. "He had sprinter speed but moved like a route horse."
Materialty is a half brother to Longines Ken- tucky Oaks (gr. I) runner-up My Miss Sophia and is bred similarly to Travers (gr. I) winner Afleet Express. Young said there has been "massive" in- terest in the horse for stud duty, but no plans have been finalized.
"He's got a more appealing female family than some of the others in his division," Young said. "I couldn't be more hopeful for him." BH An initiative for owners by

TAKEOVER TARGET FLIES HOME By Frank Angst
The 3-year-old turf division has looked espe- cially strong in North America this season and
on Aug. 7 it welcomed another impressive stakes winner in Takeover Target.
Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence's Harlan's Holiday colt unleashed a powerful late kick—the final sixteenth was run in 5.72 seconds— to secure the first stakes win of his career in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (gr. IIT) Friday at Saratoga Race Course. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. saved ground on the winner throughout, searched for room for a few strides turning for home, then angled outside where Takeover Tar- get unleashed his powerful winning move to edge stakes winner A Lot by a half-length.
Juddmonte Farms homebred Courtier finished third, earning his first graded-stakes placing.
A $175,000 purchase by agent Mike Ryan at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale, Takeover Target was bred in Kentucky by Dorothy Matz. He is out of the Empire Maker mare Vanquished, a half sister to two-time grade I winner Critical Eye. BH

Takeover Target gets his first stakes win in the Hall of Fame (gr. IIT)
HOF CEREMONY: POIGNANT, HILARIOUS By Karen Johnson
With moments that ranged from heart-achingly poignant to outright hilarious, eight new mem-
bers of racing's Hall of Fame were inducted during a ceremony Aug. 7 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Tom Durkin served as emcee.
Lighter moments of the ceremony came from 82-year-old trainer King Leatherbury, who delivered a humorous, yet sincere speech, and Harry Deitch- man, 91, who co-owned Hall of Fame inductee Xtra Heat in partnership with Ken Taylor and trainer John Salzman Sr.
Steve Kenly, the co-owner of Lava Man, spoke on behalf of the partnership group that campaigned the former claimer who went on to win more than $5.2 million and travel the world.
"We're from the West Coast, and this is our first visit to Saratoga," Kenly said. "There is a lot of blue blood here today; I guess he was blue collar."
Also among the inductees was the late Chris Antley, a brilliantly gifted jockey who suffered from substance abuse, and whose life at ended at the age of 34 in 2000. BH
DEL MAR DIRT TIGHTENING UP By Jeremy Balan
Races over Del Mar's new dirt surface are begin- ning to look more and more like those at Santa
Anita Park, which could be good or bad, depending on your perspective.
While forwardly-placed horses seem to be more successful in recent races, opinions still vary on the new surface. The track is composed of the same El Segundo sand Santa Anita uses and was playing slow early on in the meet, but all seem to agree the track is beginning to show what could be its lasting form.
"It has just settled itself. I don't think they've done anything to tighten it," jockey Aaron Gryder said. "The rain the first week helped it and, over a couple weeks, it's settled. Now we're seeing what the true track is. You can win from anywhere if you're on the right horse."
Track superintendent Richard Tedesco, who is responsible for maintaining the dirt course, is contin- uing to monitor and tweak it.
"It's about consistency, for the horses and the public," Tedesco said. "Now they're winning from everywhere and everyone is happy." BH

BLUE HEAVEN BACK WITH SPEIGHTSTOWN COLT By Ian Tapp
Adam Corndorf of Blue Heaven Farm near Versailles, Ky., hasn't sent a yearling to Fasig-Tip-
ton Saratoga in years, but that will change for this sale with Hip 27, a Speightstown colt that is the first foal out of Blue Heaven's Tiznow mare Zermatt. The colt is part of the Taylor Made Sales Agency consign- ment.
"Saratoga likes young mares, good physicals, and sire power, and I think he has all three," Corndorf said. "Zermatt was a really fun mare for us. We were able to scratch out a little black type at the end of her career, and she won three allowance races at Keene- land, which is tough to do."
On the mating that produced the colt, Corndorf said, "She's a leggy, stretchy mare, so we thought we could beef her up with Speightstown, and we got exactly what we wanted. The colt is a big, imposing yearling that looks like he could go two turns but hopefully will have that Speightstown speed." BH

Seventy horses offered at the Saratoga sale during the previous 13 years went on to win a graded or group stakes, and 21 became grade/ group I stakes winners. Prices of future grade I winners range from $1.6 million paid for Mushka by Zayat Stables in 2006 to $40,000 for Stellar Wind, bought by Vernan Lee Stables in 2013.
The value proposition among the future grade/group I winners is sur- prisingly good. They cost $323,158 on average, while their average earnings are more than $1.1 million. Triple Crown winner American Pharoah,
bought back for $300,000 by breeder Ahmed Zayat, has the most grade I wins with seven. A Shin For- ward, who earned $3.4 million in Japan, generated the strongest rate of return in terms of earnings and yearling price. Agent John Kimmel paid $125,000 for the son of Forest Wildcat in 2006. BH

ROUND TABLE: IMPROVING THE BRAND By Tom LaMarra
It has been four years since McKinsey and Company issued a recommended blueprint for ways the Thor-
oughbred industry can reinvent itself and deal with economic challenges; some ideas have been imple- mented and some have been slow to develop.
So on Aug. 9 at The Jockey Club Round Table Con- ference in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the 2011 report will be revisited again with an emphasis on using tools to deal with structural changes and strengthening racing's brand. In conjunction, the annual confer- ence will devote a good chunk of time to discussing equine medication and drug testing, particularly in light of recently introduced federal legislation that would give the United States Anti-Doping Agency oversight of medication policy, testing, and enforce- ment of penalties.
USADA chairman Edwin Moses will address the structure of the organization and the need for in- dependent oversight of sports such as racing, while Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear will offer his views on the role of government in racing. BHCO

PYRO-TECHNICS IN JAPAN By Naohiro Goda
One of the hottest stallions in Japan is Pyro, a son of Pulpit who joined the stallion roster at
Darley Japan in 2010. Following the recent success of his progeny, the Forego Stakes (gr. I) and Lou- isiana Derby (gr. II) winner is looking good in his adopted country.
From 10 overall juvenile winners (all colts) from his third crop, Pyro has eight at National Associa- tion of Racing tracks, including two winners at Oi Racecourse, the premier NAR track in Tokyo. NAR courses feature a dirt main surface, where Pyro's progeny tend be more successful. As of Aug. 2, he is the leading NAR 2-year-old sire.
Pyro's third crop is also performing well at Japan Racing Association tracks despite most of the major JRA races being run on turf. He has had two JRA maiden winners this summer: Taisei Pulsar at Chu- kyo July 19 and Kaneno Iro at Niigata on Aug. 1.
Breeders have noted Pyro's success. Compared to only 51 in his first crop, he sired 101 foals in 2014. BH

LEA GETS NOD IN DEEP WHITNEY By Frank Angst
In a race field as deep as Saturday's Whitney Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course, it's a bit
odd to select a horse that has three straight losses, but in Lea's case, each of those carries a reasonable explanation.
After opening 2015 by overcoming a trou- bled trip to win the Hal's Hope Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park in his first start in 11 months, Lea finished second as the favorite in the Donn Handicap (gr. I) where he chased front-running winner Constitution.
Lea then traveled to Dubai where he ran well to finish third in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) at Meydan. After that March 28 effort, Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott gave the 6-year-old First Samurai horse time off before the June 13 Stephen Foster Stakes (gr. I), where he finished second to fellow Whitney starter Noble Bird.
The Stephen Foster was impressive in that
Lea finished strong—nearly making up 1 1/2 lengths in the stretch—when finishing a head behind the winner. It signals Lea has handled his return from Dubai well and is prepared to move forward.
Since June 30 he has worked about once a week, further evidence that Lea is on schedule for Mott. And Lea has already established his grade I class with a 2014 Donn win—not that class is rare in a Whitney lineup that features seven grade I winners among the 10 entered.
Honor Code figures to be favored off his spectacular 3 3/4-length victory in the Metropol- itan Handicap (gr. I) when he rallied from last of 10. He's a terrific horse, but I have two concerns here, one being that Honor Code has registered his biggest victories at one turn, and the other that his closing run in the Met Mile was set up by a speed duel between Bayern and Private Zone. Those two gunned through a half-mile in :44.92.
I will say I think Honor Code's poor Alysheba Stakes (gr. II) effort this year had more to do with dislike of the sur- face than dislike of two turns.
The field appears big and balanced enough to provide value in the win and exacta pools, so I'll stick with that action.
The $25 play: $20 to win on 4 (Lea); $1 exacta wheel 4 over 1 (Honor Code), 2 (Tonal- ist), 3 (Noble Bird), 6 (V. E. Day), and 9 (Wicked Strong) BH
