FBC 74th badminton tourney concludes

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 20: The Fili-pino Badminton Committee in Ku-wait (FBC) concluded its 74th Bad-minton Tournament on Friday at the Kuwait Disabled Sports Club in Hawally with veteran and amateur badminton players participating in the event.

All players displayed their best

form as they battled it out with the best players. The veteran smashers from Levels A&B, the equally ag-gressive players from Level C and the new and upcoming badminton players of Level D showcased inten-sified performances aiming to bag the championship cup.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich, Aug 20, (AP): Michigan sopho-more Nick Carlson advanced to the US Amateur semifinals Friday in an unlikely hometown run at Oak-land Hills.

Carlson, from Hamilton, Michi-gan, beat Illinois junior Dylan Meyer of Evans-ville, Indiana, 3 and 1, taking the lead with a birdie chip-in on the par-4 14th that he celebrated with a running, double fight pump.

Wearing a Wolverines outfit, the 19-year-old Carlson won the par-4 15th with a birdie and ended the match with a par victory on the par-3 17th on the Donald Ross-designed South Course that Ben Hogan dubbed “The Monster” in his 1951 US Open victory.

Carlson will face 20-year-old Australian Curtis Luck, a 2-up win-

ner over Pepperdine sophomore Sa-hith Theegala of Chino Hills, Cali-fornia.

Carlson is 1,981st in the world amateur ranking. He averaged 73.90 in 11 events for Michigan as a freshman, with his best finish a tie for third in the 2015 Windon Memorial Classic. In the Big Ten

Match Play Championships in Feb-ruary, he was 0-2-1.

Boote is 41st in the rankings.In the other quarterfinals, Oklaho-

ma sophomore Brad Dalke of Nor-man, Oklahoma, beat former Stan-ford player David Boote of Wales 3 and 2, and Southern California ju-nior Jonah Texeira of Porter Ranch, California, topped LSU sophomore Luis Gagne of Orlando, Florida, 3 and 2.

Luke is seventh in the rank-ings, Texeira 223rd, and Dalke 265th.

Pieters takes CzechMasters ‘sole’ leadVYSOKY UJEZD, Czech Re-public, Aug 20, (AP): Defending champion Thomas Pieters is by himself at the top of the Czech Masters leaderboard after shoot-ing a 2-under 70 in Saturday’s third round for a two-stroke lead.

The Belgian began the round sharing the lead with Jeff Winther of Denmark but moved ahead after three birdies at the front nine and another birdie on the 10th.

But Pieters fell back with two straight bogeys on the 11th and 12th for a 12-under 204 total at the Albatross Golf Resort near Prague.

Paul Peterson of the United States produced the best third round with an 8-under 64 to equal the course record. After a flawless round with eight birdies, Peterson surged to second with a 10-under 206. Winther is a shot further back, tied for third with Englishman Rob-ert Rock.

Javillo, KFC pip Fitness;Kuwait Steel rout Saveco

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 20: Kuwait Food Company’s Ch-ing Javillo scored 25 points including a last minute 3- pointer for his side to turn an imminent defeat into a 78-75 win against Fitness First at the PBLK basketball confer-ences played at the Disabled Sports Club, Hawally Friday.

Angeles added 17 points to the KFC slate. Javillo scored 5 of his 25 in the third quarter and finished with 6 rebounds and 12 assists. He also made a team-high four 3-point-ers as KFC rallied from behind to clinch the crucial inter-company victory.

Fitness were gripped by early game jitters as KFC’s Waslo and Angeles took turns to bombard their hoop in the opening minutes before closing the first quarter with a whopping 14 points lead at 22-8.

Fitness First, playing past the opening round of the conference, missed 7 of their

first 11 shots in the opening round but managed to recover and turn the game around in the second quarter, gnawing their deficit down to 10 points with a 19-15 run at the turn of the first half.

KFC’s Sandoy partnered with Ange-les in the third quarter in crucial runs, as he shot a clutch jumper while also grabbing an offensive rebound in the dying seconds of the quarter. He was 6-for-15 from the field. KFC had the fi-nal 8 points of the third quarter includ-ing two quick 3s from Javillo to add to his side’s lead, bringing them 14 points ahead at the turn of the period, 61-47.

The fourth quarter of the game saw both sides hit the court with aggressive offensive runs with Javillo and Ange-les leading the KFC effort while Alisbo and Tadlas alternated in their barrages to scorch the opposition hoop. Alisbo led the field with 38 points including six 3-pointers.

With just three minutes left, the duo scored 11 points between them in the round as the game headed to the fi-nal stretch with KFC still in the lead. Alisbo and Tadlas scored to zero down their side’s deficit, bringing the scores to 75-75. In the final seconds, it was Javillo’s shot from outside the 3-point line that handed KFC the win at 78-75 at the buzzer.

On the other hand, Saveco bowed 80-102 to Kuwait Steel in another inter-company bout. The first three minutes of the opening half saw a Devera who finished with 28 points, shot from out-side the paint to hand Steel some 3 go-ahead points to surge forward as Castro and Flores mounted ferocious attacks on the opposition’s defense to raise the Steel advantage midway into the half to 38-34.

Furyk, Glover tie for second with two others

Kim shoots Wyndham-record 10-under 60GREENSBORO, North Carolina, Aug 20, (AP): Si Woo Kim and Lucas Glover had putts for 59 on another low-scoring day in the Wyndham Championship.

Kim’s 50-foot birdie try on his final hole — the par-4 ninth — slid by the right edge Friday, leaving the 21-year-old South Korean player with a tournament-record 10-under 60 and a two-stroke lead.

Glover shot 61, missing a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-4 17th and three-putting the par-4 18th for bogey in the PGA Tour’s regular-season finale.

They missed chances to become the second player this month to break 60 on the PGA Tour.

Jim Furyk, tied for second with Glover and two others, shot the first 58 in PGA Tour history Aug 7 in the final round of

the Travelers Championship. Six players, including Furyk, have shot 59.

Kim drove into the left rough on the par-4 18th, costing himself a clean shot at the front pin position.

Kim eagled the par-5 fifth, hitting a 347-yard drive and a 170-yard approach

to 10 feet. He made the last of his 10 bird-ies on the par-4 eighth, holing another 10-footer. Kim played his opening nine in 6-under 29, and also birdied the par-4 second — making another 10-footer.

After making three bogeys in an open-ing 68, Kim had a 12-under 128 total to take the two shot advantage over Furyk,

Lucas Glover, Kevin Na and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama into the weekend.

Kim’s previous best on the PGA Tour was a final-round 63 last month in a play-off loss to Aaron Baddeley last month in

Alabama in the Bar-basol Championship.

Furyk had a 64, birdieing four in a row on Nos. 13-16.

Glover birdied Nos. 11 and 13-16 He’s coming off a seven-week break.

Matsuyama shot a 64.

The final pick comes two weeks later after the Tour Championship.

In the third game, Matar Warriors won 60-59 against KEO Tamaraws, Jax Smith and Bucu leading the charge. The KAI team on the other hand won 82-73 against HEISCO in the final game.
